To enable V Rising proximity voice chat, create a Unity Gaming Services project, activate Vivox Voice and Text Chat, copy its four credentials into ServerVoipSettings.json, place that file in the server’s active Settings directory, and restart the server. Every player must then turn on Use Voice Chat (also labelled Proximity Voice chat by some hosts) under Options > Sound. Voice chat is not enabled by default in the community setup documentation.

Check whether your server supports voice chat
Confirm support before changing credentials or files. Stunlock Studios’ PC support article, published November 26, 2024, states that voice chat is available on Official V Rising servers and on private servers hosted on PocketHost. That is the clearest official support boundary.

Community and hosting documentation also describes Vivox configuration for dedicated and hosted servers more broadly. If your server is on another provider, treat support as host- and version-dependent. Ask the host whether the installed V Rising build supports server-side Vivox and whether you can edit the persistent-data Settings folder and restart the instance. A perfectly formed configuration cannot activate a feature the host has disabled.
Version caution
Stunlock’s dedicated-server repository is labelled for V Rising Dedicated Server Instructions for v1.0.x (PC). File locations and field names can change in later builds. Use the current server documentation and the path exposed by your host, and do not overwrite shipped defaults when the server offers a local override folder under its persistent data path.

What you need before starting
- A supported V Rising PC server and permission to edit its persistent-data
Settingsdirectory. - A free Unity Gaming Services account.
- A Unity Gaming Services project with Vivox Voice and Text Chat enabled.
- The server’s restart control, whether that is a local process you manage or a host control panel.
- A text editor that can save plain UTF-8 JSON without adding a
.txtextension. - Players who can change their own V Rising audio options.
Vivox credentials identify your Unity project. Keep the token key private: do not post the completed file in a public forum, mod repository, screenshot, or support ticket unless the secret values have been removed.
Create and configure the Unity Gaming Services project
- Create an account. Register for a free Unity Gaming Services account and sign in.
- Create a project. From the Unity Gaming Services dashboard, create a project for this V Rising server. The project name is for your administration; it does not need to match the in-game server name.
- Open Services. Enter the project’s Services area and choose Vivox Voice and Text Chat.
- Choose Unity in the setup guide. Complete the guided setup for the Unity integration. V Rising uses Vivox through Unity Gaming Services, so this step creates the project credentials that the server configuration expects.
- Open Credentials. In Voice and Text Chat > Credentials, locate the four values named Token issuer, Token key, Domain, and Server.
Do not substitute a project ID, display name, or an SDK example value for one of these fields. The server file needs the exact credential values shown for your Vivox project.

A common failure is shifting these values by one row—for example, placing the token key in VOIPIssuer or copying the domain into the endpoint field. Use the labels above rather than guessing from similar-looking strings.
Create ServerVoipSettings.json
Create a new plain-text file named exactly ServerVoipSettings.json. Replace only the placeholder values in this template:

The community guide presents 14, 40, and 2.0 as defaults that work for most servers, not as mandatory values. Start with them, then adjust the three proximity parameters if your server’s play style calls for a tighter or softer audio falloff.
Put the file in the active Settings folder
- Stop the server. Shut down the V Rising process before changing its configuration.
- Find the persistent-data path. Locate the
persistentDataPathconfigured for the server. On many installations the override directory appears assave-dataSettings; a host may expose the same location under a differently named persistent-data root. - Copy the file. Place
ServerVoipSettings.jsondirectly inside thatSettingsfolder. Do not put it in the game’s shipped installation defaults when a local override folder is available. - Check the filename. Make sure the operating system has not saved it as
ServerVoipSettings.json.txt, and check that capitalization and spelling match exactly. - Start or restart the server. V Rising reads the override when the server starts. Editing the file while the process is running does not replace a restart.
Stunlock’s dedicated-server instructions describe local override files below the persistent data path. This arrangement keeps your changes separate from shipped defaults and makes them less likely to be lost during an update. If your host provides only a control panel, use its file manager to reach the persistent-data Settings directory and its restart button; if either is unavailable, ask the host whether Vivox configuration is supported.
Have every player enable voice chat
Server configuration alone does not turn on a player’s microphone. Each person must change the client setting on their own copy of V Rising:

- Launch V Rising and connect to the server.
- Open Options.
- Select Sound.
- Enable Use Voice Chat. Some hosting instructions label the same control Proximity Voice chat.
- Choose the intended input device in the game or operating-system audio settings, then test with another player nearby.
The final step is per-player. A player who leaves the option disabled will not participate simply because the server’s VOIPEnabled value is true.
How V Rising proximity audio behaves
V Rising voice chat is proximity-based rather than a server-wide radio channel. Players hear one another according to in-game distance, and the sound fades as they move apart. VOIPConversationalDistance sets the close conversational range; VOIPAudibleDistance sets the farther limit at which sound remains audible; VOIPFadeIntensity shapes the transition between those ranges.
With the guide’s example values, a player is expected to have the clearest conversation within 14 distance units, remain potentially audible out to 40 units, and experience the fade governed by intensity 2.0. These are configuration units used by the game, not metres or a published performance benchmark. Change one value at a time and have two players test in a safe area so you can associate the audible result with the setting you changed.

Troubleshoot a disabled or silent voice chat option
The option is missing or remains disabled
- Confirm the server is Official or a private PocketHost server, the two categories named in Stunlock Studios’ November 26, 2024 support article.
- If another host is involved, verify that it supports Vivox for the exact V Rising version you are running. A host limitation must be resolved by the host, not by changing JSON values.
- Check that
VOIPEnabledis the JSON Booleantrueand that the file is in the active persistent-dataSettingsfolder. - Stop and restart the server after every configuration edit.
Players connect but cannot hear one another
- Have all players enable Options > Sound > Use Voice Chat (or Proximity Voice chat) on their own clients.
- Recheck the four credential mappings: Token issuer to
VOIPIssuer, Token key toVOIPSecret, Domain toVOIPVivoxDomain, and Server toVOIPAPIEndpoint. - Verify that the endpoint is the complete HTTPS server value from Unity Gaming Services, not merely the domain or issuer.
- Test while players stand within the configured conversational and audible distances. Players outside
VOIPAudibleDistanceshould not be expected to hear one another.
The server starts normally but ignores changes
- Confirm the process is using the persistent-data path you edited. Hosts can expose more than one save location, and changing an inactive copy has no effect.
- Check for a hidden
.txtextension and for malformed JSON such as missing commas, curly quotes, or an extra character after the final brace. - Ensure the file is named
ServerVoipSettings.jsonand is directly underSettings, not inside another nested folder. - Restart after saving. The server reads local override settings at startup.
Credentials appear correct but authentication fails
- Copy the values again from Voice and Text Chat > Credentials rather than retyping them.
- Check for leading or trailing spaces accidentally included inside quotation marks.
- Make sure the four values came from the same Unity Gaming Services project; mixing credentials from separate projects can produce an apparently valid but unusable file.
- Ask the host whether outbound Vivox access or the current game build is supported before rotating credentials. Replacing valid credentials will not fix a host-side compatibility problem.
Voice works for some players but not others
First compare client settings: the voice option is individually controlled, so one player can have it enabled while another has it off. Then test distance and fade behavior with both players standing together. If only one client remains affected after enabling the option, troubleshoot that player’s selected microphone, operating-system permission, and local audio output separately from the server configuration.

Self-hosting gives you direct control over the JSON file and Unity credentials, but you are responsible for keeping the path, restart process, and game version aligned. Managed hosting can remove file-system work, yet its control panel may restrict the persistent-data folder or require a provider-specific procedure.

Shockbyte published a V Rising voice-chat setup guide on November 14, 2024, illustrating that hosted providers may document their own workflow. Treat any provider procedure as an implementation of the same requirements—Vivox credentials, a readable ServerVoipSettings.json, a restart, and client-side activation—not as evidence that every host supports the feature.
Maintaining the configuration after updates
- Keep a private backup of the completed JSON file, but remove or mask
VOIPSecretbefore sharing diagnostic copies. - Record which Unity project owns the credentials and which server path contains the active file.
- After a V Rising update, recheck the current dedicated-server instructions, especially the persistent-data path and supported field names.
- After moving hosts, repeat the support check. A new provider may expose a different Settings directory or may not support Vivox.
- When changing proximity behavior, alter only the distance or fade fields, restart, and test with two players before changing credentials.
If you follow the sequence—verify support, create Vivox credentials, map all four values correctly, install the file in the active Settings override, restart, and enable the client option—V Rising’s proximity voice chat should be available to players on the supported server.
