If a fantasy starter is ruled out before kickoff, first confirm the player’s official inactive status, then check whether your league still allows lineup changes. If the player is movable, swap in an available bench player who is eligible for that roster spot and whose game has not locked. Don’t assume an “out” report triggers an automatic replacement: platform features and league deadlines differ.
What to do before the player’s game starts
- Confirm the status and kickoff time. An injury update or report that a player is “out” is not necessarily the same as an official inactive designation. NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before their scheduled kickoff; that is approximate timing, not a guaranteed cutoff. Check current status and the scheduled start time on game day. NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives
- Check whether the lineup is still editable. Find the player in your fantasy roster and try the platform’s lineup control. A game may lock that player before other games in the week begin. League settings can also use weekly roster-change deadlines, so the platform’s general rule may not be the rule in your league. ESPN lineup rules Yahoo transaction deadlines
- Choose a legal replacement. Select an available bench player who is eligible for the vacant position or flex spot and whose game has not started. Complete the app’s swap workflow and check that the replacement appears in the active lineup. On ESPN, moving a bench player into the active lineup requires moving the player currently in that slot to the bench or waivers. ESPN lineup rules
- Confirm the change saved. Reopen or refresh the lineup view and verify the active player, roster slot, and status. If no eligible bench player is available, check whether your league permits a free-agent pickup or waiver claim before the replacement’s game starts; acquisition deadlines and processing times depend on league settings. NFL Fantasy Official Rules 2025
Can you swap in a bench player after the game starts?
Usually, not into a roster slot that has already locked, but the exact rule depends on the platform and league configuration. ESPN says a roster move involving a player can be made until that player’s team is scheduled to start, subject to valid roster slots. Yahoo’s default public, public-prize, and private-league deadlines generally follow the real-life game start; leagues using weekly roster changes can have a different cutoff. These are platform examples, not universal rules. ESPN lineup rules Yahoo transaction deadlines
Some platforms also lock a particular substitution or player pairing once either player’s game begins. If the app says the move is locked, consult your league rules or commissioner about the applicable procedure. Do not assume a commissioner can or should override a platform lock.
How automatic lineup replacements differ by platform
Automation is not a universal “player is out, replace him” switch. Each platform documents its own settings, eligible substitutes, lock timing, and trigger. Check the feature’s current settings and your saved lineup rather than assuming it acted.

| Platform | How the feature works | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeper AutoSubs | You designate an eligible bench player as a substitute for a starter. | Both players must have unstarted games when you make changes; the substitute must qualify for the starter’s roster position. Pairings lock when either player’s game begins. A league may require the substitute’s game to start at the same time as or later than the starter’s. Sleeper AutoSubs |
| NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap | Uses a ranked Backups list to select a backup when swapping out a player projected to score zero. | The documented trigger is a zero projection, not every injury update or “out” report. Check the setting and lineup to confirm a swap occurred. NFL Fantasy Auto-Swap Inactives |
| Yahoo lineup assistance | Start Active Players or Assistant GM may replace a starter under the feature’s stated conditions. | Conditions include the bench player having a scheduled game, positional eligibility, and health requirements. The feature is unavailable in leagues with a weekly roster transaction deadline; review the lineup afterward. Yahoo lineup assistance |
| ESPN lineup changes | Managers can make roster moves involving a player until that player’s scheduled game starts, subject to roster-slot validity. | The cited lineup rules describe manual roster moves; check your league settings and lineup rather than assuming an automatic substitution feature. ESPN lineup rules |
If the lineup is already locked
- Check the league’s written lineup and transaction rules to see whether it uses a weekly cutoff, individual game locks, or another deadline.
- Ask the commissioner what procedure applies if the rules are unclear. Do not count on a post-lock edit being available or appropriate.
- For future game days, review platform automation settings in advance, designate backups where supported, and confirm your league’s roster-change deadline.
