Check your league’s lineup lock and the receiver’s latest game status, then start the best eligible healthy option you have. Look at your bench first; if no suitable replacement is available, check waivers for the injured player’s backup and compare candidates by role, steady opportunity, matchup and how long you need help. Make the change before the replacement’s team plays.
1. Check your league’s rules and lineup deadline
Before choosing a replacement, confirm which roster slot is open, who is eligible to fill it and when that slot locks. Platforms and custom leagues can set different lineup deadlines, waiver schedules and WR/FLEX eligibility.
On NFL.com, rostered players lock at their game time, and its rules describe lineup changes before the player’s NFL team is scheduled to start. Those are NFL.com rules, not a universal schedule for fantasy leagues. 2. Confirm the injury news close to kickoff
Check the receiver’s latest status rather than relying on an old projection. Injury designations and inactive lists are time-sensitive, and a “questionable” tag alone does not settle whether you should replace someone. If you can wait for a more definitive update without missing your lineup deadline, keep monitoring—but know when the player locks.

3. Check your bench before making a waiver move
See whether a healthy bench receiver is eligible for the open WR or FLEX slot. In common NFL.com formats, a lineup may include two wide receivers and a FLEX, but slots vary by league. A bench player’s points count only if you move that player into a starting spot.
If you have multiple eligible options, compare their expected roles and opportunity for this week, then consider the matchup. Do not assume the player with the biggest recent score is automatically the safest replacement.

4. If needed, find a waiver replacement by role
If your bench has no suitable starter, check the waiver wire. NFL.com fantasy analyst Marcas Grant recommends starting with the injured player’s backup, then assessing whether that player is a regular starter or likely to play a substantial role. Look for repeatable opportunities rather than treating one unusually strong game as proof of a dependable workload. His in-season roster-management advice also identifies the upcoming schedule as a factor.

- Role: Is the player a regular starter, or a backup whose value depends on another injury?
- Opportunity: Is there reason to expect steady involvement, rather than a one-week spike?
- Matchup: How does this week’s opponent affect the choice?
- Time horizon: Do you need a one-week fill-in or help for the rest of the season?
- Eligibility and cost: Can the player fill your open slot, and what will the claim cost in waiver priority or FAAB?
Projections can help compare options, but they are estimates, not guarantees. A one-week starter and the best long-term roster addition may not be the same player.
5. Submit the move before the relevant lock
Once you choose, put the receiver into the open starting slot or submit the waiver claim in time. NFL.com describes game-time locks, roster limits, waiver priority and optional FAAB bidding; its 2024 official rules give platform-specific details on lineup changes and waiver procedures. Check your league’s current settings rather than assuming NFL.com’s schedule or process applies to another platform or custom league. The NFL Fantasy 2024 official rules are historical rules for that platform and season, not a guarantee of current settings.

If waivers do not solve a continuing need, a trade may help. Grant suggests looking for a manager whose roster needs complement yours—for example, a team that needs a position where you have depth and can offer receiver help. Judge the completed deal by whether it improves your lineup, not just by whether it adds a receiver.
