Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze supports two-player local co-op on one system. At the game-start screen, choose the two-player option, assign a compatible controller to each player, then start the game. Player 1 controls Donkey Kong—or Funky Kong in Funky Mode on Switch—while Player 2 controls a partner character.

Start two-player mode on Wii U

At the Game-Start Screen, select “2 Players.”

Choose which screen to use: the TV or the GamePad screen.

Select the controller each player will use.

Select Player 2’s partner character.
Player 1 controls Donkey Kong and Player 2 controls a partner. If the GamePad is selected as the display screen in two-player mode, it cannot also be used as a controller. The Wii U instruction manual explains the Game-Start Screen options.

Controllers and player roles
Nintendo Switch
Each player needs a compatible controller. Nintendo lists sharing a Joy-Con, using a Pro Controller for each player, or using two Joy-Con controllers in a Joy-Con grip as supported arrangements. Additional controllers may need to be purchased separately. Nintendo Switch multiplayer instructions
Wii U
The manual requires two controllers and states that the game supports only one Wii U GamePad. Check the controller choices on-screen when setting up your session.

What Player 2 can do
Player 2 chooses a partner such as Diddy, Dixie, or Cranky Kong. Each has a distinct ability, and partners can hop onto Donkey Kong’s back to enable special co-op moves. In Switch’s Funky Mode, Funky Kong is the lead character, and nobody can ride on his back. Nintendo’s Switch game page
