If you suspect a cryptocurrency scam, fake token, or exchange impersonator, stop the contact, preserve transaction and message evidence, secure any exposed account or wallet through independently verified official instructions, and report the incident to the appropriate authorities and services. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission lists the FTC, CFTC, SEC, FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange used to send funds as possible reporting routes; which ones fit depends on the facts. A report is not a promise that money will be recovered, a blockchain transfer reversed, or a wallet frozen.
What to do immediately
- Stop engaging with the suspicious contact. Do not click another link, install software, share your screen, send an additional transfer, or disclose a password, one-time code, private key, or wallet recovery phrase. If someone claims to represent an exchange, ignore the incoming message and verify the issue through the exchange’s official app, website, or telephone number that you find independently. The FBI’s exchange-impersonation guidance says to call the exchange’s official phone number to verify whether there is a problem: FBI IC3 alert, August 1, 2024.
- Preserve what exists. Save transaction confirmations, wallet addresses, messages, profile pages, domains, advertisements, and emails before content disappears. Keep original files and unedited screenshots where practical.
- Protect accounts and wallets that may still be exposed. Open the provider’s app or site by typing a known address or using a previously trusted bookmark, not a link in the suspicious message. Change credentials and contact the exchange through its verified security process. If a recovery phrase or private key was disclosed, treat that wallet as compromised and follow the wallet provider’s official instructions, which may include moving remaining assets to a new wallet. Review or revoke suspicious token approvals only through a wallet interface or blockchain explorer you independently trust.
- File reports promptly. Use the government, police, exchange, and platform channels that match your location and the incident. The FBI says people should report even when they do not have every transaction detail.
- Keep reference numbers and watch for follow-up contact. Unexpected offers to recover funds, identify a criminal, or unlock a wallet are a common second scam. Never pay an upfront tax, tracing charge, unlock fee, or recovery fee to an unsolicited helper.
Where U.S. residents can report
The FTC’s consumer guidance identifies the following routes for fraud or suspicious activity involving cryptocurrency. They serve different purposes; filing with one does not automatically file with the others.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Channel | Official route | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Federal Trade Commission (FTC) | ReportFraud.ftc.gov | Consumer-fraud report and pattern information |
| Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) | CFTC.gov/complaint | Possible commodities or derivatives violations |
| Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) | sec.gov/tcr | Possible securities-market violations or investment-offering misconduct |
| FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) | ic3.gov or the IC3 complaint form | Internet-enabled crime and cryptocurrency fraud information for law-enforcement analysis |
| The exchange used to send funds | Use the exchange’s independently verified app, website, or telephone number | Account security, pending transfers, and the exchange’s internal fraud process |
The FTC lists these agencies without saying that every case belongs to all of them. Choose based on what happened: an investment solicitation, a derivatives transaction, a hacked exchange account, a social-media impersonation, or another type of internet crime may involve different channels. You can submit to more than one relevant place and tell each one where else you reported.
IC3 is an intake and analysis center. Its complaint information can be used and shared with law-enforcement and partner agencies, but submission does not guarantee that an investigator will contact you or that a particular action will follow. If there is immediate physical danger, call 911 or local police; the IC3 site gives that direction.

Which reporting route should you use?
Compare channels by three questions: where the conduct occurred, what the report is for, and what danger is still active. A regulator’s tip form is different from an exchange-security ticket, and neither replaces a police report where local law requires one. An investment pitch that used a fake token may justify an FTC or SEC submission as well as an IC3 report; a futures or commodities transaction may make the CFTC relevant. A stolen exchange login requires the exchange’s security process immediately, even if you also file with IC3.
If you are unsure, describe the facts accurately rather than trying to classify the offense yourself. Include the dates, services, assets, and promises involved. Agencies can route or share information when appropriate. Do not delay a security response while deciding which regulator is the perfect fit.
Build an evidence packet before submitting
Create a chronological record while events are fresh. Do not alter originals in a way that removes context, and do not publish sensitive credentials or identity documents in a public post. Collect whatever is available; missing one item should not stop you from reporting.

- Service records: the exchange or payment service used, account identifiers, deposit and withdrawal records, order or transfer references, and any destination memo or tag.
- People and accounts: the name or claimed identity, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, wallet labels, and other identifiers used by the suspect.
- Contact history: how and where you first met, the platform or app, conversation exports, message URLs, email headers where available, and the instructions you were given.
- Web and token information: full website domains and page URLs, suspicious app names, the token contract address, and relevant blockchain-explorer or listing pages. A familiar project name or ticker is not proof that a token is official.
- Visual evidence: screenshots of messages, profiles, websites, advertisements, token displays, and transaction confirmations. Keep the original messages and files as well as copies used in a report.
- Timeline: when contact began; each instruction, login, approval, or transfer; attempted withdrawals; discovery of the fraud; security actions; and reports already filed.
The FBI’s victim guidance asks for transaction details and related information such as communication platforms, web domains, phone numbers, identifiers, and how the victim met the person. If you lack transaction data, the FBI still asks you to report what you do have.
If you did not lose money
You can still report a suspicious token, impersonating account, phishing site, or attempted transfer. The FBI encourages reporting even when no financial loss occurred. Explain that the incident was attempted or interrupted, provide the wallet address, contract address, profile, domain, or message involved, and identify anything you did not send. Early reports may help connect your information with other complaints.
Do not manufacture a loss or guess at facts. Mark uncertain details as unknown, preserve the original wording, and state whether you clicked a link, connected a wallet, entered credentials, or signed an approval. A near miss can still involve an exposed password or permission that needs attention.

Use independently verified destinations
Type the known government or provider address into your browser, use an official mobile application, or obtain a telephone number from a statement or the provider’s legitimate site. Do not use a number, QR code, shortened URL, or “support” account supplied by the suspected scammer. A real agency form will not require your seed phrase or private key.

Understand what an IC3 filing does
IC3 complaints help the FBI and partner agencies identify and analyze internet crime. The complaint form explains how submitted information may be used or shared. It is not a court order, a chargeback request, or a guarantee of a case, refund, asset seizure, or response. The FBI’s published guidance says: If you believe you or someone you know may be a victim of a cryptocurrency scam, immediately submit a report to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov or contact your local FBI Field Office and provide as much transaction information as possible.
This is guidance, not a legal requirement.
Report the hosting account or site
Use the native report function for the social network, messaging service, domain host, app store, or token-listing service, reached through its app or independently verified official site. Include the exact profile name, handle, profile URL, message URL, domain, contract address, and copies of the relevant content. Menus change, so follow the current interface rather than a copied click path. Ethereum.org’s scam-help guidance covers reporting scam websites, social accounts, and addresses.
Common reporting mistakes to avoid
- Deleting the conversation: save an export or screenshots first, because a suspended account or disappearing message may make later verification difficult.
- Using the scammer’s contact details: search results and sponsored listings can also be manipulated. Navigate to the agency or exchange yourself.
- Posting secrets publicly: never include passwords, one-time codes, seed phrases, private keys, or unredacted identification in a complaint screenshot or social-media warning.
- Connecting a wallet to “check” a token: inspection can expose the wallet to phishing or an unwanted signature. The contract address and existing evidence are enough to begin a report.
- Filing only with the platform: moderation may remove a profile, but it is not a substitute for an exchange-security ticket or government report when those are relevant.
- Assuming a report freezes funds: confirmed blockchain transfers generally cannot be recalled by a complaint alone. Ask the exchange about its process, but do not promise yourself a reversal.
Fake tokens and project impersonation
An impersonation token can copy a known project’s name, ticker, logo, website style, or claims. Treat the contract address as the identifying detail, not the display name. Save the address, the page or message that promoted it, the network, and any explorer or listing page shown to you. Do not connect a wallet to an unfamiliar site merely to inspect or “verify” the token.
The FBI Denver Field Office has issued a warning specifically about cryptocurrency token-impersonation scams and directs victims to report to IC3: FBI Denver warning. There is no universal token-reporting authority that can erase a token from a decentralized blockchain. Reporting can provide intelligence and may help a platform or website host moderate related content, but it does not itself reverse an on-chain transfer.

If a fake exchange or project account contacted you
Record the exact profile name, handle, profile URL, message URL, platform, phone number, and email address. Do not continue the conversation to gather more evidence. Report the account through the platform, then verify your real exchange account independently. If you clicked a link or installed software, use the provider’s official security process and consider professional device-security help before logging in again.
If a suspicious website is involved
Preserve the full domain and page URL from evidence you already have. Do not revisit the site on a device that may be compromised just to take a screenshot. A second visit can expose passwords, wallet permissions, or malware. Use an existing message, browser history, email, or trusted technical helper to document the address safely.
Secure an exposed account or wallet
Exchange account or transfer in progress
Sign in only through the verified app or address you already trust. Change the password, enable the provider’s available multi-factor protection, review active sessions and withdrawal settings, and contact the exchange’s security team. Ask whether a pending transfer or account takeover can be reviewed; do not assume it can be cancelled. Preserve the support ticket number for your reports.
Recovery phrase or private key disclosed
Assume anyone with the phrase or key can control that wallet. Follow the wallet provider’s official migration instructions to create a new wallet and move remaining assets, if doing so is safe and technically appropriate. Never enter the phrase into a form, share it with an investigator, or send it to someone claiming to be support. A migration transaction can carry network fees and its own risks, so rely on trusted documentation rather than an unsolicited adviser.
Suspicious token approvals
Use a wallet interface or explorer that you independently verify. Review the token, spender address, network, and permission amount before revoking anything. Do not connect the wallet to an approval-checking site recommended in an unexpected message, and do not sign a transaction simply because someone says it will “unlock” funds.
Reporting outside the United States
The U.S. agencies above do not form a worldwide reporting list. Readers elsewhere should use their national consumer-protection authority, cybercrime or online-fraud portal, financial regulator, local police, the exchange involved, and the platform hosting the impersonation. Confirm the jurisdiction and current submission method on each authority’s official site.

Singapore example
Singapore-specific guidance illustrates the local approach. The Singapore Police Force advises people dealing with impersonation of cryptocurrency platforms to contact the cryptocurrency platform, make a police report, and report fraudulent cryptocurrency phishing websites to the Cyber Security Agency’s SingCERT. These instructions come from its July 3, 2025 advisory and should not be treated as a global procedure: Singapore Police advisory.
What a report can—and cannot—do
Reporting creates a record that may help agencies, exchanges, and platforms connect related activity. It does not guarantee reimbursement, identify the perpetrator, freeze a wallet, remove a token from a blockchain, or reverse a confirmed transaction. Act quickly because an exchange may have its own security deadlines, but do not rush into an unverified “recovery” process.
The scale of reported activity is substantial: the FBI says IC3 received more than 69,000 public complaints in 2023 about financial fraud involving cryptocurrency. That figure counts complaints, not verified unique victims, successful prosecutions, or total losses: FBI 2023 Cryptocurrency Fraud Report.
Recognize recovery scams after you report
Fraudsters often target victims again by posing as investigators, lawyers, blockchain tracers, exchange employees, or government officials. Warning signs include an unexpected direct message, a demand for an upfront fee, a supposed tax or compliance payment before release, requests for your recovery phrase or remote access, and guarantees that funds will be returned. IC3 states that it does not work with outside law firms or cryptocurrency services to recover funds. End the contact, preserve it as evidence, and report the new attempt through the same official channels.
Keep your records organized
Store a read-only copy of your timeline, hashes, addresses, screenshots, submitted forms, confirmation emails, and ticket numbers. Keep private keys, recovery phrases, passwords, one-time codes, and unredacted identity documents out of public posts and ordinary email threads. If an agency or exchange asks for identity verification, use only its authenticated portal and follow its current privacy instructions.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Where do I report a fake crypto token?
Save the token contract address, network, ticker, promotion page, and related messages. Report internet-enabled fraud to IC3, notify the platform or listing service hosting the promotion, and use any regulator or police channel that fits your location. There is no universal authority that can erase a token from a decentralized blockchain.
Can I report a scam if I did not lose money?
Yes. FBI guidance encourages reports even without a financial loss. Explain that it was attempted or interrupted, provide the identifiers and evidence you have, and state whether you clicked a link, entered credentials, connected a wallet, or signed an approval.
How do I report an exchange impersonator safely?
Do not reply or use the phone number or link in the message. Find the exchange’s official app, website, or telephone number independently, verify whether your account is affected, and open its security report. Also preserve the impersonating profile and report it through the hosting platform.

Will filing a report recover my crypto or freeze the scammer’s wallet?
No outcome is guaranteed. A report may help agencies and services connect information, but it does not automatically reverse a blockchain transfer, freeze a wallet, remove a token, identify a perpetrator, or reimburse you.
What should I do if someone offers to recover my funds?
Treat an unsolicited recovery offer as a likely second scam. Do not pay an upfront tax, tracing, unlock, or legal fee, disclose a recovery phrase, or grant remote access. Preserve the message and report it through official channels; IC3 says it does not work with outside law firms or cryptocurrency services to recover funds.
Should I publish the scammer’s wallet address or my evidence online?
You may share non-sensitive warning information through an appropriate platform, but keep seed phrases, private keys, passwords, one-time codes, and unredacted identity documents private. Give complete evidence to authenticated agency, exchange, or platform portals instead.

The Bottom Line
Stop contact, preserve hashes and communications, secure any exposed account or wallet through independently verified instructions, and report to the channels that match your jurisdiction and the conduct. Reporting helps create an official record, but it cannot promise recovery—especially if a second scammer asks you to pay for it.
