Start with Joomla’s login module and select Forgot your Password? if you can receive mail at the account address. Enter that address, use the emailed confirmation code, and choose a new password. It is the least invasive recovery path.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
If email recovery is unavailable, use the method that matches the access you still have: a logged-in Super User or Administrator can edit the account; a server-file administrator can use Joomla’s configuration.php recovery procedure; a database administrator can use phpMyAdmin or MySQL; and a shell user with PHP CLI can run Joomla’s password-reset command. Manual database and configuration changes are emergency measures: follow the instructions for the installed Joomla release, sign in, set the password again inside Joomla, and remove every temporary change.

Do not begin by editing the database unless the safer application routes are unavailable. Each method needs a different kind of access, and the risk increases when Joomla is bypassed directly.

Before touching anything, confirm the site’s Joomla release, the exact username, and which type of access you possess. A site commonly has several user rows, and an administrator account is not necessarily the account whose email you remember.

Method 1: Reset the password with “Forgot your Password?”
Use this first whenever the account email is available and the site can send mail.
- Open the Joomla login page and select Forgot your Password?.
- Enter the email address associated with the administrator account.
- Submit the form and check that mailbox, including its spam, quarantine, and filtered folders.
- Open Joomla’s message, follow its confirmation link or code, and enter the new password when prompted.
- Return to the administrator login page and sign in with the account username and new password.
This flow keeps the password inside Joomla’s normal reset process and avoids direct file or database edits. If no message arrives, first verify the address and the site’s outgoing-mail configuration. Do not repeatedly submit requests while troubleshooting; use the newest valid message because older tokens can expire or be superseded.

When the email account is no longer available
The frontend form cannot prove ownership without access to the account’s mailbox. Move to a backend, server-file, database, or CLI method only when you are authorized to administer both the Joomla site and the associated hosting environment.
Method 2: Have a logged-in administrator change the password
If any authorized Super User or Administrator can still enter the backend, there is no reason to edit files or SQL.
Rank #2
- Sign in to Joomla’s administrator area with the working account.
- Open Users and then Manage.
- Locate the locked-out account by its username or email and open its user-edit screen.
- Enter a new password in the password field and enter it again in the confirmation field.
- Save the user record, then test the affected account in a separate browser session.
Joomla’s user documentation states that, when only an Administrator login is available, a Super User or Administrator must perform the reset. Use an account with permission to edit users; being able to view the public site is not sufficient.
Method 3: Use Joomla’s configuration.php recovery procedure
This route is for a complete backend lockout when you can edit files on the server. The current Joomla Admin Password Recovery guide describes a temporary change in the installation’s configuration.php file that lets you recover a Super User or create a new one. The exact recovery line and placement are release-specific, so use the instructions for the Joomla version installed on this site rather than copying an old snippet.
Prepare safely
- Confirm the Joomla document root and make a copy of
configuration.phpbefore editing it. - Use a secure server connection or hosting file manager, not a public upload or shared ticket attachment.
- Record the original file permissions so they can be restored after recovery.
- Have a strong, unique password ready, but do not place real credentials in screenshots, shell history, or support tickets.
Perform the temporary recovery
- Open the Joomla installation’s
configuration.phpwith the server’s file editor. - Apply the temporary recovery change exactly as specified in the current Joomla guide for your release. Do not substitute a remembered Joomla 3 or Joomla 4 recipe for a newer installation.
- Save the file, preserving its PHP syntax and existing configuration values.
- Open the administrator login page and complete the recovery action described by the guide: recover the existing Super User or create a temporary authorized user.
- Sign in immediately, open Users → Manage, and set a permanent password for the intended account.
Remove the recovery change
- After confirming that the normal account works, restore the original
configuration.phpcontent or remove the temporary recovery line as instructed. - Restore the file’s original permissions and ownership.
- Delete any temporary user that is no longer needed, or reduce its privileges to the minimum required.
- Test a fresh administrator login after cleanup.
Leaving a recovery line in place or leaving the file writable creates an avoidable path back into the site. Joomla’s recovery guidance specifically tells administrators to change the Super User password once access is regained and to remove the temporary recovery change.
Method 4: Reset the password through phpMyAdmin or MySQL
Use a database edit only when frontend, backend, configuration-file, and CLI recovery are unavailable or unsuitable. This method can lock out the account or damage authentication if the wrong row, table, or password format is used.
Rank #3
Back up and identify the correct table
- Make a current database backup and verify that it can be restored before editing a row.
- Open the database used by this Joomla installation in phpMyAdmin or a MySQL client.
- Find the users table using the installation’s configured table prefix. Joomla documentation refers to it as
#__users, where#__is replaced by the site’s actual prefix. - Do not assume the table is named
jos_users; many installations use a different prefix. - Search the table for the exact username or email you intend to recover and confirm the account identity before changing anything.
Edit according to the installed Joomla release
Open the selected user row and change its password value according to the current Joomla documentation for that release. The password field must contain a format Joomla can verify. Joomla warns that older direct-database recipes using an MD5 value may be obsolete for Joomla 5 and newer; current examples use modern bcrypt-style hashes. Do not paste an old MD5 instruction into a current site and assume it is valid.
Because password storage rules are version-sensitive, the database guide for the installed release is the authority for the value to enter. If you cannot confirm the correct format, stop the SQL edit and use the configuration.php or CLI route instead.

- Save only the intended user row and verify that no other columns or accounts changed.
- Open the administrator login page and authenticate with the username and temporary password.
- Immediately open Users → Manage and replace the emergency password through Joomla’s own form.
- Sign out and sign back in to confirm that the application-generated password works.
- Review the database backup, SQL history, screenshots, and support notes and remove any exposed credentials.
The second password change is important: it lets Joomla write the value using the application’s current password handling instead of leaving a hand-entered emergency value in place.
Method 5: Use Joomla’s command-line reset
Joomla provides a CLI command when you have terminal access to the site and a working PHP CLI installation. Run it from the Joomla CLI context, normally the site’s installation directory:
php joomla.php user:reset-password --username=<username>
For example, Joomla’s CLI guide lists:
php joomla.php user:reset-password --username=cinderella
- Connect to the server with an account authorized to administer the Joomla installation.
- Change to the directory containing
joomla.php. - Check that the PHP CLI binary is available and corresponds to the version required by this Joomla installation.
- Run the command with the exact account username, replacing
<username>with that value. - Provide the new password when Joomla prompts for it; do not put a real password in a command that will remain in shell history.
- Sign in through
/administrator, verify the intended account, and change the password again in the backend if the site’s recovery policy requires it.
If the command reports that the user cannot be found, stop and verify the username rather than trying random accounts. If PHP cannot start Joomla, use the web-based or server-file route instead of forcing a different PHP binary without checking compatibility.

Many older Joomla password-reset pages show a manually generated MD5 value inserted into the users table. Joomla’s current documentation warns that such instructions can be outdated for Joomla 5 and newer, where modern password values are bcrypt-style hashes. A hash that looks plausible is not proof that Joomla will accept it.
- Identify the installed Joomla release before choosing a database recipe.
- Prefer the frontend form, backend user editor, or CLI because Joomla creates the password value itself.
- If a direct edit is unavoidable, follow the current release-specific recovery guide and test only the intended account.
- After access returns, set the password through Joomla and remove all emergency changes.
Troubleshooting branches
The reset email never arrives
Check the exact email stored for the username, spam and quarantine folders, and the site’s outgoing-mail configuration. If the mailbox is inaccessible or mail delivery cannot be restored, use a method based on server, database, or shell access.
You cannot find the expected users table
Open Joomla’s configuration and identify the database table prefix, then look for that prefix followed by _users. The #__users notation is a placeholder for the configured prefix, not a literal table name.
Best Value
Several accounts look similar
Match the username and email, and check the account you selected before saving. Resetting the wrong row does not recover the intended administrator and can disrupt another user’s access.
The new database password is rejected
Do not keep trying arbitrary hashes. The likely issue is a release-specific password format or an edit to the wrong row. Restore from the verified backup if necessary, then use the current Joomla recovery guide or CLI command and set the final password inside Joomla.

You can edit files but cannot log in after the configuration recovery
Recheck that the temporary line was placed exactly where the current guide specifies, that PHP syntax was preserved, and that the site is reading the file you edited. Once a login works, remove the temporary line and restore permissions before investigating anything else.
The CLI command fails before asking for a password
Confirm that you are in the Joomla installation’s CLI context, that joomla.php is present, and that PHP CLI is installed and compatible with the site. A hosting account may have a different PHP CLI version from the web server; resolve that mismatch with the host or use another supported recovery path.
Secure the site after recovery
- Set a unique, high-entropy password for the recovered account through Joomla’s user editor.
- Remove temporary
configuration.phprecovery code and restore the file’s original permissions. - Delete or disable any temporary recovery user and review the Super User list for accounts you do not recognize.
- Check that the recovered account has the intended role and that no unnecessary Administrator or Super User privileges remain.
- Sign out of existing administrator sessions where your hosting or Joomla setup provides session controls, then test a new login.
- Secure the mailbox, hosting panel, database credentials, and SSH account used during recovery; a Joomla password reset does not protect a compromised control plane.
- Keep the database backup in a protected location and remove temporary copies containing credentials.
The safest order is application recovery first, CLI second when available, and direct file or database intervention only when necessary. Whatever route you use, the recovery is complete only after the normal Joomla login works, emergency changes are gone, and the account’s final password has been written by Joomla.
