Self-hosting WireGuard Easy means running a WireGuard VPN server and its browser-based administration panel in a Docker container on a VPS you control. The practical path is: provision a publicly reachable Linux VPS, install Docker or Podman, deploy the maintained WireGuard Easy Compose file with persistent /etc/wireguard storage, allow the WireGuard UDP port through both firewalls, and protect the web panel with HTTPS and restricted access.

This guide covers the VPS requirements, Docker Compose workflow, ports, authentication, client setup, testing, upgrades, backups, and the failure modes most likely to interrupt a new deployment.

What WireGuard Easy provides

WireGuard Easy packages a WireGuard VPN server with a web administration UI in one container. Instead of hand-editing peer configuration files, you can create and edit clients, enable or disable them, display QR codes, download configuration files, and view connection statistics from a browser. The project also lists IPv6 support, two-factor authentication, OpenID Connect (OIDC), Prometheus metrics, and optional per-client firewall filtering.

The convenience is administrative, not managed hosting. You still operate the VPS, operating system, container runtime, firewall, DNS, TLS endpoint, backups, and upgrades. The VPN’s private keys and client profiles remain your responsibility.

VPS requirements

The maintained getting-started documentation expects a host you can administer, a domain name or public IP address, a supported CPU architecture, and a container runtime such as Docker or Podman. The versioned v15.4 examples persist WireGuard data by mounting storage at /etc/wireguard.

Network and access requirements

  • A publicly reachable IPv4 address, or a DNS name that resolves to the VPS. A domain is useful when the address may change, but the documentation also accepts a public IP.
  • Permission to run containers and the networking capabilities required by WireGuard. Some locked-down VPS products do not permit the necessary kernel or container networking features.
  • Inbound UDP access on the WireGuard listen port. UDP 51820 is the default in the basic tutorial, but you can choose another port in the documented Compose configuration.
  • A provider-level firewall and a host firewall that you can change. Both must allow the selected UDP port.
  • Persistent disk space and a backup method for the WireGuard data directory.

Architecture and operating system

The current basic tutorial lists x86_64 and arm64. Older documentation also lists armv7, so check the architecture on the exact WireGuard Easy version you intend to deploy rather than assuming every release supports every ARM board. Use a current Linux distribution and apply its security updates before exposing the service.

How much CPU, RAM, and bandwidth?

The canonical project documentation does not publish a minimum RAM, CPU, bandwidth, or monthly-price figure. Required capacity depends on the number of peers, traffic volume, encryption workload, logging, and the VPS provider. Start with a plan that gives you room to monitor resource use, then scale after observing actual CPU, memory, disk, and network consumption. Do not treat an unpublished minimum as a guaranteed specification.

Decide how the service will be exposed

Component Typical exposure What must be protected
WireGuard tunnel Public UDP port, 51820 by default Provider firewall, host firewall, correct client endpoint, and the container’s port mapping
Web administration UI Prefer HTTPS through a reverse proxy Strong dashboard authentication, TLS, DNS, and access restrictions
Persistent data Named volume or host directory mounted at /etc/wireguard Filesystem permissions, encrypted backups, and recovery testing

The WireGuard UDP endpoint normally needs to be reachable from the public internet so roaming clients can connect. The administration panel does not. Put it behind a correctly configured HTTPS reverse proxy, or follow the project’s reverse-proxyless approach while limiting access with a firewall allowlist, private network, or an administrative VPN. Avoid publishing the UI directly to every internet address just because the tunnel itself is public.

Prepare and harden the VPS

  1. Provision the host. Select a current Linux image, attach a public IPv4 address or configure DNS, and confirm that your account can obtain administrative privileges.
  2. Update the operating system. Apply the distribution’s security updates, remove unused services, and use key-based SSH authentication where practical. Restrict SSH to trusted source addresses if your operating environment permits it.
  3. Configure firewalls. Keep SSH available for administration, allow the selected WireGuard UDP port, and deny unrelated inbound services. Configure the VPS provider’s network firewall and the Linux host firewall separately; allowing one does not automatically allow the other.
  4. Install Docker using Docker’s supported installation method, or install a compatible Podman setup. The WireGuard Easy README directs operators to install Docker before starting the container. Verify the runtime with docker --version and docker compose version when using Docker Compose.

Do not open the dashboard port broadly during setup unless you need a temporary diagnostic exception. If you must do so, remove the exception after the reverse proxy or private access path is working.

Create the deployment directory and persistent storage

The basic tutorial uses /etc/docker/containers/wg-easy for the Compose project. Create a dedicated directory and keep the Compose file, environment files, and secrets readable only by administrators.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo mkdir -p /etc/docker/containers/wg-easy
sudo chmod 700 /etc/docker/containers/wg-easy
cd /etc/docker/containers/wg-easy

The maintained Compose file mounts persistent storage at /etc/wireguard. That mount is essential: it keeps server keys, peer definitions, and related state when the container is recreated. A named Docker volume and a carefully permissioned host directory are both valid approaches when they are actually attached to that path.

Build the Compose configuration from the maintained version

Obtain the Compose file from the WireGuard Easy documentation for the version you are deploying instead of copying an unversioned snippet. Environment-variable names and authentication requirements can change between releases. Pin a documented image tag when reproducibility matters, and record that tag in your change notes.

Set the endpoint and ports

Set WG_HOST to the public DNS name or IP address that clients can reach. Select the WireGuard listen port, using UDP 51820 if you have no reason to change the tutorial default. Select the web UI port required by the versioned Compose example, and map it only as broadly as your reverse-proxy design requires.

If the public address changes, update DNS and the endpoint setting before clients attempt to reconnect. A DNS name avoids editing every client profile when the underlying address changes, provided the DNS record is updated promptly.

Set dashboard authentication

Use the password-hash mechanism required by the selected WireGuard Easy version. The setup guidance describes bcrypt-hashed dashboard authentication. When a bcrypt hash is placed in a Compose file, every dollar sign in the hash must be doubled so Compose does not treat it as variable substitution. Store the Compose file and any environment file containing the hash as private administrative data.

Do not put an ordinary plaintext password into a field that expects a bcrypt hash, and do not paste secrets into shell history or public issue reports. If the deployed release supports two-factor authentication or OIDC, enable those controls after confirming their version-specific configuration names and callback requirements.

Preserve the required capabilities and mount

Use the maintained service definition’s networking settings and capabilities exactly as documented for that release. Do not remove WireGuard-related capabilities merely to make the Compose file look more restrictive; the container must be able to create and manage the tunnel interface. Confirm that the persistent volume is mounted at /etc/wireguard, not at a similarly named temporary path.

Start WireGuard Easy and verify it before opening access

  1. Change into the directory containing the Compose file: cd /etc/docker/containers/wg-easy.
  2. Start the deployment in the background: docker compose up -d.
  3. Check the service state with docker compose ps. Confirm that the container is running rather than repeatedly restarting.
  4. Read startup output with docker compose logs --tail=200. Resolve configuration, permission, capability, or port-binding errors before testing a client.
  5. Confirm that the expected UDP and web ports are listening on the host and that the container has the persistent /etc/wireguard mount.

Only after the container is healthy should you configure provider and host firewall rules for the final public UDP port and complete the reverse-proxy setup.

  • The VPS provider’s network or security-group firewall.
  • The Linux host firewall, such as the firewall managed by your distribution.

Make sure the container port mapping and the client endpoint use the same port. A rule for TCP 51820 does not permit WireGuard’s UDP traffic.

Web UI and reverse-proxy ports

A reverse proxy normally receives HTTPS on TCP 443 and forwards requests to the internal WireGuard Easy UI port. Keep the UI’s container port private to the VPS or bind it only to the reverse proxy’s local interface when the Compose version allows that design. If you use a reverse-proxyless deployment, restrict the UI port to known administrative addresses or an internal VPN and follow the project’s documented access pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS and TLS

Create the DNS record for the dashboard hostname and point it to the VPS address. Configure the reverse proxy with that hostname, obtain a valid TLS certificate, and set its upstream to the UI port exposed by WireGuard Easy. Verify that the proxy forwards the required HTTP headers and does not accidentally route the dashboard to a different service. The WireGuard endpoint hostname and the dashboard hostname may be the same or different; separating them can make firewall and certificate policies clearer.

Secure the dashboard

  • Use HTTPS for every browser session that reaches the UI.
  • Use a long, unique dashboard credential represented by the required bcrypt hash.
  • Double every dollar sign in the hash when Compose parsing requires that escaping.
  • Restrict the reverse proxy by source IP, private network, or an administrative VPN when practical.
  • Enable supported two-factor authentication or OIDC only after checking the exact version’s setup variables and callback behavior.
  • Keep Compose files, environment files, logs containing sensitive values, and WireGuard data out of public repositories.

WireGuard peer private keys are sensitive even if the dashboard itself is protected. Treat an exported client configuration or QR code as a credential that can grant network access until its peer is disabled or removed.

Create and connect your first client

  1. Open the dashboard through the protected HTTPS address.
  2. Create a client and give it a recognizable name that identifies the device or user.
  3. Display the generated QR code in the dashboard and scan it with the official WireGuard mobile application, or download the configuration file for a desktop WireGuard client.
  4. Activate the profile on the device.
  5. Test from a network different from the VPS network, such as cellular data. This avoids mistaking local routing for a working internet-reachable tunnel.

Check that the client reports a recent handshake, that the intended routes are present, and that DNS requests behave as designed. Decide explicitly whether the profile is for access to selected private networks or for full-tunnel internet traffic; the route and DNS settings must match that decision.

Back up the data that makes the VPN recoverable

The persistent /etc/wireguard directory contains the server’s WireGuard state and private-key material. Back up that directory before upgrades, migrations, and major configuration changes. A backup that omits the mounted data may leave you with a running container but no usable peer configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Encrypt backups as an operational best practice.
  • Restrict backup access to administrators and protect the encryption key separately.
  • Keep at least one copy outside the VPS so disk failure or account loss does not destroy every copy.
  • Record the image tag, Compose configuration, DNS names, firewall ports, and authentication variable names alongside the backup, without exposing secrets unnecessarily.
  • Perform a recovery test on a controlled host; an untested archive is not proof that the service can be restored.

Update without losing peers

  1. Read the release notes and migration guidance for the target version, especially before crossing a major version.
  2. Back up /etc/wireguard and record the current image tag and Compose configuration.
  3. Check that the authentication variables and password-hash format remain valid in the target version.
  4. Pull the documented image: docker compose pull.
  5. Recreate the service: docker compose up -d.
  6. Inspect status and logs, then confirm that existing clients and the dashboard still work.

The basic tutorial documents the pull-and-recreate sequence. Optional automatic-update tooling exists, but unattended upgrades should be adopted only when you have rollback, backup, and monitoring procedures that fit your risk tolerance.

Monitoring and routine maintenance

  • Review container logs for repeated restarts, failed migrations, authentication errors, or permission problems.
  • Watch disk usage so logs and backups cannot fill the VPS.
  • Check handshake activity for expected peers and investigate devices that should be active but never reconnect.
  • Verify that scheduled backups complete and that backup storage remains available.
  • Apply operating-system and container updates on a planned schedule.
  • Remove or disable peers that are no longer trusted, and treat lost devices as compromised until their profiles are revoked.

Prometheus metrics are listed as an optional WireGuard Easy capability when you need to integrate container and VPN observations into an existing monitoring system.

Troubleshooting by symptom

No handshake

  • Confirm the client endpoint contains the VPS public IP or DNS name.
  • Confirm that the endpoint uses UDP 51820 or the custom port configured on the server.
  • Check both the provider firewall and host firewall for that UDP rule.
  • Run docker compose ps and inspect logs to ensure the container is running.
  • Test from a separate network so a local router or split-tunnel rule does not hide an endpoint problem.

Dashboard unreachable

  • Verify the web UI port in the Compose file and the reverse proxy’s upstream address.
  • Check the DNS record for the dashboard hostname.
  • Inspect the TLS certificate and reverse-proxy error log.
  • Check firewall rules and confirm that the UI is not bound only to an inaccessible interface.
  • If using a reverse-proxyless design, test from an address explicitly allowed by your firewall.

Login fails after an upgrade

Confirm the target version’s password-hash variable and authentication syntax. Check that dollar signs in the bcrypt hash were escaped for Compose. A hash that was valid in an older configuration can fail if the variable name or parsing rules changed.

Configuration disappears after recreation

Inspect the container’s mounts and verify that a named volume or host directory is attached at /etc/wireguard. Data written only to the container’s writable layer is lost when that container is removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The host is rejected or the container will not start

Confirm the CPU architecture against the versioned getting-started page and verify that Docker or Podman supports the networking features required by WireGuard. Recheck the documented capabilities and mount paths rather than substituting settings from an unrelated release.

Self-hosting versus a managed VPN service

Decision factor WireGuard Easy on your VPS Managed VPN service
Control and isolation You control the server, peer data, routes, firewall, and access policy. The provider controls the infrastructure and service policy.
Operational effort You handle Docker, OS patching, TLS, firewalls, backups, monitoring, and upgrades. The provider operates the control plane, reducing your maintenance work.
Network reachability Requires a public address or DNS name and a provider that permits inbound UDP. Usually uses the provider’s existing reachable infrastructure.
Administration Browser UI, QR onboarding, configuration downloads, and optional advanced integrations. Depends on the provider’s client and management tools.
Cost and responsibility You pay for the VPS, possible DNS and backup services, and your own operational time. Pricing and infrastructure responsibility are bundled into the service.

Choose the VPS route when control, a private address space, and self-managed keys matter more than minimizing administration. Choose a managed service when maintaining a public host, firewall, reverse proxy, backups, and upgrades is not an acceptable responsibility.

Final deployment checklist

  • Current Linux VPS with a supported architecture and required WireGuard networking capability.
  • Public IPv4 address or DNS name configured as WG_HOST.
  • Docker or Podman installed using a supported method.
  • Version-matched Compose file with a documented image tag when reproducibility matters.
  • Persistent mount at /etc/wireguard.
  • UDP 51820, or the selected alternative, allowed by both provider and host firewalls.
  • HTTPS reverse proxy or a tightly restricted reverse-proxyless UI path.
  • Bcrypt dashboard authentication configured with Compose dollar-sign escaping.
  • Encrypted, access-controlled backup of WireGuard data.
  • At least one client tested from an external network with a confirmed handshake and expected routing.
