If your Nintendo Switch is linked to the Parental Controls app, check the current PIN there first: open Parental Controls and select Parental-Controls PIN. If you cannot access the app, use the console’s Forgot PIN screen to get an inquiry number, then follow Nintendo’s official reset process to obtain a Master Key. The steps and eligibility can differ by region.
Choose the right recovery route

Check the app for the current PIN
- Open the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the linked smart device.
- Select Parental Controls, then Parental-Controls PIN. The current PIN is displayed.
If you only forgot the PIN, retrieving it here avoids requesting a Master Key. If you change the PIN in the app, Nintendo says the change takes effect after the console connects to the internet. Nintendo of America Support
Reset the PIN with the console’s Forgot PIN option
- On the HOME Menu, select the Parental Controls icon to reach the PIN prompt. You can also check the Parental Controls section of System Settings to see whether the console is linked to the app. Nintendo of America Support
- Enter an incorrect four-digit PIN six times. Press + or − for Help, then scroll to Forgot PIN.
- Write down the inquiry number displayed. Keep that screen open: Nintendo says the number changes if you exit, making the earlier number unusable.
- Go to Nintendo’s official PIN reset tool for your region and follow its prompts. The US tool requests the console product, serial number, inquiry number, contact details, and payment information; its displayed payment options are Visa or Mastercard. - Use the Master Key and instructions Nintendo provides to reset the PIN on the console, then set a new PIN.
Do not use third-party Master Key generators or recovery services. Nintendo’s documented route is its own reset tool or support team.
Avoid the 30-minute lockout
Nintendo says six incorrect PIN attempts within 30 minutes block further attempts for 30 minutes, with a countdown shown on screen. Stop guessing and use Forgot PIN instead. Nintendo of America Support

Check regional requirements before requesting a Master Key
The self-service process is not identical in every country. Nintendo’s US tool asks for a console serial number, inquiry number, name, email, and ZIP or postal code, and displays a Visa or Mastercard payment workflow. Nintendo UK says its self-service route requires a linked Nintendo Account and advises users without one to contact support. Confirm the instructions on Nintendo’s support site for the console’s country or region rather than assuming US requirements apply everywhere. Nintendo PIN reset tool Nintendo UK Support

Nintendo UK warns that resetting a PIN on a console linked to the app also unlinks the app and deletes its play-time history and restrictions. If you want to preserve those records and settings, try retrieving the current PIN in the app before using the reset route. Nintendo UK Support

Recovering or changing a PIN is different from removing parental controls. Nintendo’s management instructions describe entering the PIN on the console and choosing the option to delete parental-control settings; unlinking the app removes restrictions managed through it.
