Steam lets you remap a connected controller separately for each game. In desktop Steam, connect the controller, open the game’s Library page, then choose Edit Steam Controller Configuration… from its context menu. If the controller is unavailable, check Steam > Settings > Controller and enable the matching support option. The exact controls offered depend on whether the game uses Steam Input API actions or a legacy layout.
Before you start
- Connect your controller before opening the configuration editor; Valve notes that the desktop configuration option appears when a controller is connected.
- If Steam does not recognize it, go to Steam > Settings > Controller and enable the support option corresponding to your controller. Valve’s setup guide names PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and generic controllers.
- Controller compatibility is not identical across devices and games. Valve’s Big Picture documentation lists Steam Controller, official Microsoft Xbox controllers, official Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and official Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Third-party controllers may work, but Valve does not officially support them.
Remap buttons in desktop Steam
- Connect the controller to your computer.
- Open Steam > Settings > Controller and enable the matching support option if Steam has not made the controller available.
- Open Library, right-click the game, and select Edit Steam Controller Configuration…. Valve says this option appears when a controller is connected.
- In the configurator, select the control region and input you want to change, then choose the new binding or action offered for that game.
- Apply the layout and test it in the game. If a binding does not behave as expected, see the troubleshooting section below.
Open the editor in Big Picture or Steam Deck
Big Picture
Open the game’s menu, choose Manage Game, then Controller Configuration. This is a different route to the per-game editor than the desktop Library context menu.
Steam Deck
Open the individual game’s details and view or edit its current layout. SteamOS screens and labels differ from desktop Steam, so the desktop and Big Picture paths above do not apply verbatim. Steam client updates can also change settings layouts; Valve’s May 27, 2026 Steam Deck client notes include changes to controller settings and the Steam Input configurator.
Understand what bindings a game offers
Games using the Steam Input API
A game that uses Valve’s Steam Input API may expose actions defined by its developer, including action sets. The configurator can therefore present game-specific actions rather than only a generic list of button outputs.

Legacy layouts
In legacy mode, controller inputs can be mapped to hardware-style gamepad inputs or to keyboard and mouse commands. Keyboard or mouse bindings can help when a game lacks gamepad support. Choosing a gamepad-only output, however, cannot add gamepad controls that the game itself does not accept.
Troubleshoot a layout that does not work
- Confirm the controller is available to Steam. Recheck the matching support option under Steam > Settings > Controller, then reopen the game’s configuration editor.
- Check the Steam Overlay. Valve’s support guidance says the overlay is important to controller functionality. Test whether it opens in the game if a configuration fails to apply.
- Match the output to the game. Use gamepad bindings only when the game accepts gamepad input; use keyboard or mouse bindings where appropriate for a game without gamepad support.
- For a non-Steam game, consider its launcher. Valve notes that a launcher can affect the overlay, which may in turn interfere with controller functionality.
How to choose the right mapping approach
| What the game supports | What the configurator may offer | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Input API | Developer-defined actions and possibly action sets | Choose the in-game action that matches the behavior you want. |
| Legacy gamepad input | Mappings to gamepad inputs | Use when the game accepts controller input but does not expose Steam Input API actions. |
| Keyboard or mouse input | Mappings to keyboard or mouse commands | Use when the game lacks gamepad support or when a keyboard/mouse command is the appropriate output. |
Valve describes the configurator in its Steamworks player guide as a starting point for exploring Steam Input: “This should give you a brief overview about how to start playing around with the Steam Input configurator.”
