The standard Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox Series X does not have a conventional factory-reset button. In most cases, “resetting” it means performing a power cycle: hold the controller’s Xbox button for about 5–10 seconds until it turns off, wait a few seconds, then press the Xbox button again.

This will not erase games, delete saved data, reset your console, or restore the controller to factory settings. If the controller still fails, work through the battery, cable, pairing, firmware, and hardware checks below.

Quick reset: power-cycle the controller

  1. Press and hold the controller’s Xbox button for approximately 5–10 seconds.
  2. Release the button when the controller turns off.
  3. Wait a few seconds.
  4. Press the Xbox button once to turn the controller back on.
  5. Test it on the Xbox dashboard.

The Xbox logo should illuminate when the controller restarts. If it reconnects, the problem was probably a temporary power or wireless-state glitch. This is a complete power cycle, not a factory reset. Microsoft describes the procedure in its controller troubleshooting guidance: hold the Xbox button for 5–10 seconds until the controller turns off.

Remove and reinstall the batteries

If the controller remains dark, shuts off immediately, or works only intermittently, remove its power source before investigating wireless settings.

  1. Turn the controller off.
  2. Remove the battery cover.
  3. Take out both AA batteries, or remove the rechargeable battery pack.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  5. Inspect the contacts for corrosion, residue, looseness, or damage.
  6. Install fresh AA batteries or a fully charged pack, checking their orientation.
  7. Turn the controller on and test it.

Battery removal is a deeper power interruption and may clear a temporary lockup, but it is not a guaranteed factory reset. The current Xbox Wireless Controller uses AA batteries as its standard power option, and Microsoft advertises up to 40 hours of battery life under its test conditions. Actual battery life varies with usage, a connected headset, accessories, and battery type. See the official controller specifications.

If the controller works with fresh AA batteries but not with a rechargeable pack, the pack or its contacts may be the problem. A brief Xbox-button flash followed by immediate shutdown commonly points to insufficient power, poor contact, or a connection problem.

Re-pair the controller with Xbox Series X

A controller that powers on is not necessarily connected. If the Xbox logo keeps flashing, it is usually searching for a wireless connection rather than confirming a successful pairing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn on the Xbox Series X using the console’s power button.
  2. Press the Pair button on the front of the console.
  3. Within the pairing window, press and hold the controller’s Pair button on its top edge, near the USB-C port.
  4. Keep holding until the Xbox button flashes.
  5. Wait for the flashing to stop and the Xbox button to remain steadily illuminated.
  6. Test the controller.

Do not confuse the controller’s Pair button with its Xbox button. Also, pairing the controller to a phone or PC over Bluetooth is a separate connection context from pairing it to the Xbox over Xbox Wireless. Microsoft lists the standard controller as compatible with Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS, using Xbox Wireless for consoles and Bluetooth for supported computers and mobile devices.

Try a wired USB connection

Use a USB-C data-and-charging cable, not a charge-only cable. The current Series X|S controller uses USB-C; older Xbox controller models may use micro-USB.

  1. Connect the controller directly to the Xbox Series X with the cable.
  2. Connect the other end to the controller’s USB-C port.
  3. Press the Xbox button.
  4. Test the controller while it is wired.
  5. If it works, check for a firmware update before returning to wireless mode.

If one cable works and another does not, the failed cable may be charge-only or damaged. Try another USB port as well.

Result What it suggests
Works wired but not wirelessly Pairing, firmware, interference, or the controller’s wireless radio
Fails both wired and wirelessly Battery, cable, USB port, firmware, or controller hardware
Works on another device but not the Xbox Console pairing, console software, or console wireless hardware
No light with known-good batteries and cable Likely controller hardware failure

Update the controller firmware

If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, or it connects and disconnects unpredictably, check its firmware. A wired connection is the safer choice when wireless communication is unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the controller’s Xbox button.
  2. Open Profile & system.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Devices & connections.
  5. Select Accessories.
  6. Select the affected controller.
  7. Open the “…” menu.
  8. Check the firmware version and choose Update if one is offered.
  9. Keep the controller connected until the update finishes.

Microsoft’s controller update guidance notes that menu wording and update behavior can vary with the Xbox system software and controller model. If the screen says no update is available, the controller is current for that update path.

If the firmware update fails or stalls

  • Try a different USB-C data cable.
  • Use another USB port on the console.
  • Disconnect unnecessary USB accessories.
  • Leave the controller connected for up to five minutes if the update appears delayed.
  • Power-cycle the Xbox, then retry.
  • Where available, use the Xbox Accessories app on a Windows PC with a known-good data cable.

Power-cycle the Xbox Series X

If more than one controller is affected, or the controller update and pairing process repeatedly fail, restart the console itself:

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the front of the console for about 10 seconds.
  2. Wait until the console shuts down completely.
  3. Turn it back on.
  4. Reconnect or re-pair the controller.

This is a console power cycle, not a factory reset. Do not choose Reset console merely because a controller is unresponsive. A console reset is a separate, last-resort software procedure and is unnecessary for most controller connection problems.

Fix the problem by symptom

Symptom Best next steps
Controller will not turn on Power-cycle it, remove the batteries for 30 seconds, install fresh AA batteries, and try a known-good data cable. Check for damaged or corroded contacts.
Xbox button flashes continuously Repeat the console-and-controller Pair-button procedure. A flashing logo means it is searching; a steady logo is the useful connection confirmation.
Controller will not pair Move closer to the console, re-run pairing, try USB, and update firmware while wired.
Controller keeps disconnecting Test directly in front of the console, temporarily disconnect other wireless accessories, avoid enclosed cabinets or dense electronics, and compare wireless with wired operation. Interference is possible, not certain.
Works only while plugged in Compare fresh AA batteries with the rechargeable pack. Inspect battery contacts and the battery compartment.
Connected but buttons do not respond Reconnect the cable, disconnect a headset or accessory, try another USB port, update firmware, restart the console, and test another controller. Re-pairing will not repair physically broken buttons.
Firmware update fails Use another data cable and USB port, power-cycle the console, and retry. If available, use the Xbox Accessories app on Windows.
Several controllers fail on this Xbox Test a known-good controller and power-cycle the console. Multiple controllers failing only on the Series X points more strongly to a console-side issue.

Reduce possible wireless interference

For repeated disconnections, test the simplest wireless setup:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move closer to the console.
  • Temporarily disconnect other wireless accessories.
  • Place the controller directly in front of the console.
  • Avoid placing the console behind a television, inside a closed cabinet, or next to dense electronics.
  • Compare the result with a wired connection.

If wired play is stable but wireless play is not, pairing, firmware, interference, or a wireless-radio fault becomes more likely. This test does not prove that a particular household appliance is causing the problem.

Test another controller or device

Cross-testing prevents you from replacing a working controller—or blaming the console unnecessarily.

  • Test the suspect controller on another Xbox, Windows PC, phone, or tablet if available.
  • Test a known-good Xbox controller on the Series X.
  • Use a known-good USB-C data cable.
  • Try multiple USB ports.

If the suspect controller fails everywhere, focus on its battery, cable, or hardware. If it works elsewhere but not on the Series X, investigate the console’s pairing, software, or wireless hardware. If several controllers fail only on the Series X, the console is the more likely source.

When resetting will not fix the controller

Power-cycling, re-pairing, and firmware updates cannot repair physical or internal faults such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Stick drift caused by worn components.
  • Broken bumpers, triggers, D-pad parts, or buttons.
  • Liquid damage.
  • Corroded battery contacts.
  • A damaged USB-C port.
  • A failed internal wireless component.
  • Damage that occurred during a firmware update.

After testing fresh batteries, a known-good data cable, pairing, firmware, and another device, check Microsoft’s Xbox controller service information. Eligibility, fees, warranty coverage, and replacement availability depend on the model, region, date, and coverage.

Should you buy anything?

You do not need to buy a product to perform the basic reset. If you need to continue diagnosing the controller, a reputable USB-C data cable is more useful than immediately buying a replacement. Fresh AA batteries are also a practical diagnostic comparison.

Consider the official Xbox Wireless Controller only after the fault is confirmed or the controller has physical damage. Microsoft also offers an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C accessory; it is convenient, but testing with standard AA batteries first helps determine whether the rechargeable pack is the failing component. Prices and availability vary by retailer and region.

Scope note: These instructions target the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Controller supplied for Xbox Series X|S. Elite, Adaptive, PowerA, Turtle Beach, 8BitDo, and other controllers may use different reset buttons, battery designs, firmware tools, and service procedures. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for those models.

Bottom line

For a standard Xbox Series X controller, start by holding the Xbox button for 5–10 seconds to power-cycle it. Then reseat or replace the batteries, reconnect it with a USB-C data cable, re-pair it with the console, and update its firmware. If it still fails across multiple tests, treat the problem as a battery, console, or hardware fault—not something a factory reset can solve.
