Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, custom audio belongs in a resource pack, not a behavior pack. You can either replace an existing vanilla sound by matching its path and basename, or register a new sound event with sounds.json and sound_definitions.json. After that, activate the pack and test the sound with an in-game event or /playsound.
These instructions are for Bedrock Edition add-ons and resource packs. Java Edition uses a different resource-pack and sound system, so do not copy this layout directly into a Java pack.

Before you start
- A Bedrock resource pack with a valid
manifest.json. - A text editor.
- An audio editor or converter that can export valid OGG Vorbis files. Audacity is a free option; any suitable OGG-capable editor works.
- A test world.
- Cheats enabled if you plan to use
/giveor/playsound. - The vanilla resource pack if you are replacing an existing sound.
On current main-release Minecraft Bedrock for Windows, the development pack directory is:
%appdata%Minecraft Bedrockuserssharedgamescom.mojangdevelopment_resource_packs
Retail paths vary by platform and installation method. Android, iOS, consoles, and Realms generally use an imported or distributed .mcpack or add-on rather than the same Windows development-folder workflow.

Choose the right method
| Goal | Method |
|---|---|
| Change a vanilla sound | Recreate its path under sounds/ and match its basename exactly. |
| Add a new named sound | Define it in sounds/sound_definitions.json and connect it through root-level sounds.json. |
| Trigger a custom sound manually | Use /playsound with the exact registered identifier. |
| Use a sound for a custom block, entity, script, or map event | Register the sound, then connect it to the relevant game system or command. |
Replacement is quick but can conflict with other packs. A new, namespaced event takes more setup but is safer for maps, mini-games, cooperative add-ons, and multiplayer distribution.
Method 1: Replace an existing Bedrock sound
1. Find the vanilla asset
Obtain the vanilla resource pack and search for the sound you want to change. Microsoft’s example uses the chest-opening asset at sounds/random/chestopen. The vanilla pack is a reference source; normally, copy the required structure into your own pack instead of editing the vanilla files directly.
2. Recreate the path in your pack
A minimal replacement might look like this:
resource_pack/
├── manifest.json
└── sounds/
└── random/
└── chestopen.ogg
The replacement must match the vanilla file’s basename exactly. These are different names:
chestopen.ogg
chest_open.ogg
ChestOpen.ogg
chestopen2.ogg
The extension does not necessarily have to match the original: Microsoft documents that a replacement can use .ogg when the original uses another supported format, as long as the filename before the extension matches. Export the audio as OGG rather than merely renaming a WAV or MP3 file.
3. Export and test it
Place the valid OGG file in the recreated directory, activate the resource pack in a test world, and trigger the original event. For the chest example, use a chest you already have or, with cheats enabled, run:

- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
/give @s chest
Place and open the chest. If the original sound still plays, check pack priority, reload the world, and restart Minecraft if necessary.
When replacement is the wrong choice
Vanilla overrides are useful for personal texture packs and controlled projects, but they can collide with another resource pack that replaces the same file. Microsoft’s cooperative add-on guidance advises creators not to override vanilla sounds and music in cooperative add-ons. For a shareable project, register a unique sound event instead.
Method 2: Add a brand-new sound event
Putting an OGG somewhere inside a pack does not automatically create a command-ready sound. A new sound needs a definition, an event reference, and a trigger.
Recommended file layout
resource_pack/
├── manifest.json
├── sounds.json
└── sounds/
├── sound_definitions.json
└── example_creator/
└── example_pack/
└── ui/
└── alert.ogg
Use a distinctive namespace such as example_creator, not a generic identifier like alert. Microsoft recommends unique, namespaced references and placing sound assets at least two folders deep to reduce collisions between add-ons.
Define the sound asset
Create sounds/sound_definitions.json:
{
"format_version": "1.20.20",
"sound_definitions": {
"example_creator:alert": {
"category": "ui",
"sounds": [
"sounds/example_creator/example_pack/ui/alert"
]
}
}
}
The official Microsoft tutorial uses 1.20.20 in its example. Treat that as the documented example, not a promise that every future Bedrock version will require exactly that value. Compare current documentation, the current vanilla pack, and validation results when targeting a newer release.

The definition gives the sound an identifier, assigns an audio category, and points to the asset without the .ogg extension. Keep the path under the pack’s sounds/ structure.
Connect it through sounds.json
At the resource-pack root, alongside manifest.json, create sounds.json:
{
"individual_event_sounds": {
"events": {
"example_creator.alert": {
"sound": "example_creator:alert",
"volume": 1.0,
"pitch": 1.0
}
}
}
}
Here, example_creator:alert is the sound reference declared in sound_definitions.json. The event name, example_creator.alert, is the event you associate with a trigger. The official structure is version-sensitive, so validate the finished pack against current Bedrock rules rather than combining fragments from unrelated Java tutorials.
Registration is not triggering
These files make the audio available; they do not make a custom block or entity play it automatically. A command block, function, script, animation, entity event, block configuration, or another game event must call the sound. For custom blocks, Bedrock’s blocks.json reference includes a sound property, but using that route requires the rest of the block implementation to be configured correctly.

- access new mini games and game modes through servers
/playsound <sound: string> [player: target] [position: x y z] [volume: float] [pitch: float] [minimumVolume: float]
For the example above:
/playsound example_creator:alert @s
To play it at your current position with explicit values:
/playsound example_creator:alert @s ~ ~ ~ 1 1 0
The arguments select the sound, target player, origin position, volume, pitch, and minimum volume. Microsoft documents volume and minimum volume from 0.0 to 1.0, and pitch from 0.0 to 256. Playback is not automatically global: distance, position, volume, category, and command parameters affect what players hear.
The command must use the exact sound identifier from sound_definitions.json, including its namespace and capitalization. If the game reports an unknown sound or produces silence, test the registration before debugging a custom block or script.
Add random sound variants
A sound definition can contain several alternatives:
"sounds": [
"sounds/example_creator/example_pack/ui/alert",
"sounds/example_creator/example_pack/ui/alert_2"
]
Place both OGG files at those paths. When the event plays, the game can choose among the entries. This is useful for footsteps, impacts, machinery, interface feedback, and ambient effects because repeated actions sound less mechanical. The array provides alternatives; it is not a fixed rotation or guaranteed sequence.

Audio preparation tips
- Export to real OGG Vorbis audio. Renaming
alert.wavtoalert.oggdoes not convert the file. - Use short, clean filenames without spaces or unusual punctuation.
- Open the exported file in an audio player before troubleshooting Minecraft.
- Reduce excessive source loudness. A file that is too loud can overpower other categories or sound distorted.
- Do not assume an unsupported universal bitrate, sample rate, channel count, or maximum duration. The requirements can depend on the target Bedrock version and valid decoder behavior.
Troubleshooting: a practical decision tree
- Does the pack appear and activate? If not, fix the pack structure and
manifest.jsonbefore debugging audio. - Is the pack above competing packs? Move it higher in the resource-pack stack. Another pack may be replacing the same asset.
- Is the file under
sounds/? Check that it is not insound/,assets/sounds/, or a behavior-pack directory. - Is the file genuinely OGG? Test it outside Minecraft; an extension change alone is not conversion.
- For a replacement, does the basename match? Recheck every character, including capitalization and underscores.
- For a new event, are the JSON files in the right places?
sounds.jsonbelongs at pack root;sound_definitions.jsonbelongs insidesounds/. - Is the JSON valid? Check commas, braces, quotation marks, nesting, duplicate keys, and trailing commas. Do not paste curly quotes from a word processor.
- Is there only one sound_definitions.json? Microsoft’s sound-definition validation rules flag multiple definition files, invalid structure, invalid JSON, and references outside the expected sounds structure.
- Does the command use the exact identifier? Compare the
/playsoundname with the definition character for character. - Are cheats enabled? They are required for
/playsoundand for the tutorial’s/givetest. - Is stale audio still playing? Leave and re-enter the world, restart Minecraft, and retest. Caching behavior can vary by platform.
If the sound is quiet, inspect the source file, the event’s volume, the command’s volume, the selected audio category, and your distance from the sound origin.

Sharing the pack
A pack that works in a Windows development folder is not automatically available to another player. Include the resource pack in the distributed .mcpack or add-on, or configure the world’s resource-pack distribution as appropriate. Test the imported pack on another installation or with another player. Common multiplayer problems include a missing pack, a pack that was not forced or enabled, an asset omitted from the export, a conflicting higher-priority pack, or a changed path between versions.
For cooperative projects, prefer namespaced new events over vanilla replacements. This reduces collisions and makes the sound’s purpose clear to other creators and players.
Final checklist
- Edition is Minecraft Bedrock, not Java.
- The audio is a valid OGG file.
- The resource pack is active in the test world.
- Replacement files match the vanilla path and basename exactly.
- New sounds have one valid
sound_definitions.jsonand a root-levelsounds.json. - Identifiers use a unique namespace.
/playsounduses the exact declared identifier.- Cheats are enabled for command tests.
- Pack priority and reload state have been checked.
- The completed pack has been imported and tested on the devices or worlds where it will be shared.
For the official syntax and version-sensitive details, consult Microsoft’s custom-sounds tutorial, /playsound reference, and pack-content reference.
