Choose the reset that matches your goal
The save directory separates terrain, world timing, exploration and character data. That lets you reset one layer without necessarily destroying the others.

Prepare the server before changing anything
1. Confirm which save is active
Do not assume the default location. A dedicated server normally stores worlds under Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/, but UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder can redirect the location. A hosted panel may expose the same data under a path such as userdata/Saves/<Game World>/<Game Name>/. Check the loaded server configuration and use the path it specifies; the official server reference documents the save layout at 7 Days to Die server, while the migration guide explains how custom folders affect saves at local-to-dedicated save migration.

2. Tell players what will be lost
A map reset can remove bases, mines, roads, harvested trees and other placed-block changes even when characters remain. A full wipe also removes character files. State the exact reset type and whether the day, Blood Moon schedule or map exploration will be cleared before taking the server offline.
3. Stop the service completely
Use the panel’s Stop control or shut down the dedicated server gracefully, then wait until it reports that the process has exited. Host Havoc explicitly advises, “Stop your server completely before making any file changes.” Editing a live save can race with writes and leave an incomplete reset; its support article is dated June 9, 2026 and is available at the reset guide.

4. Make a rollback copy
Copy the entire active <GameName> folder, not just one subfolder, to storage outside the active save path. An external SSD is suitable for a local copy. Include the configuration values for GameWorld, WorldGenSeed, UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder so you can reconstruct the original setup. Host Havoc warns: “This is destructive. All world data will be lost. Download any backups you want to keep before proceeding.”
What each save item controls
Region/: terrain and world changes
Region/ contains region data for terrain and placed-block state. Bases, dug areas, demolished structures and harvested trees are examples of changes represented there. Removing it gives the server a clean map while leaving character files available. The world-wipe protocol documents this separation at wiki.7d2d.net.
Player/: character progression
Player/ holds per-player character files, including levels, perks, inventory and status effects. If the aim is to preserve progression, do not delete or replace this directory. A full wipe that removes it creates new level-1 characters.

main.ttp: world clock and events
main.ttp stores world-level state such as the current day, time, weather and Blood Moon counter. Delete it only when you intentionally want those values regenerated. Keeping it means a region reset can leave the existing day and event schedule in place.
map_*.dat: individual exploration
Each map_*.dat file records a player’s map-exploration data. Removing these files clears what players have revealed without deleting their levels, perks or inventory. It does not by itself regenerate terrain.
Terrain generation and play-state are separate. A random-world layout can be retained or regenerated independently depending on the selected world type, seed and files you remove; the save-migration documentation covers that distinction at wiki.7d2d.net.
Method 1: rename Game Name for a reversible reset
This is the safest way to test a fresh world because the old directory is left untouched. It is also the quickest option in a managed hosting panel.
- Stop the server and complete the backup steps above.
- Open the server configuration and locate the exact
Game Namevalue. Change it to a new name, using a value that has never been used for this world. - Save the configuration and start the server. It will create a new save directory using the new name.
- Connect with a test account and confirm that the expected world, spawn and day-one state appear.
- To return to the previous world, stop the server, restore the original
Game Name, and start it again. The old save remains under its original name, as described by Host Havoc.
This method creates a new character set in the new save. It does not selectively carry over the old Player/ directory unless you copy those files later, so use the soft-reset method when preserving progression is the primary requirement.

Method 2: reset the map while keeping characters
Use this procedure for a new buildable landscape with existing levels, perks, inventory and status effects.
- Stop the server and verify the active
Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/path. - Copy the complete save folder to a separate backup location.
- Inside the active save, delete only the
Region/directory. LeavePlayer/untouched. - Decide whether to remove
main.ttp. Remove it if the day, weather and Blood Moon counter should restart; keep it if the existing world clock should continue. - Decide whether to remove the
map_*.datfiles. Remove them if everyone should rediscover the map; keep them if exploration should remain visible. - Start the server and allow it to regenerate the missing region data.
- Join with an existing account and check that character progression is present, while the map and structures reflect the selected reset.
Do not delete Player/ as part of this workflow. The protocol at wiki.7d2d.net identifies that folder as the character-progression boundary.
Method 3: perform a complete wipe
A full wipe removes the entire world and its player state. Use it for a genuinely new season or when no part of the old save should remain active.
- Stop the server and download or copy the whole active save folder.
- Delete
Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/itself, not merely itsRegion/subfolder. - Review
GameWorld,Game Name,WorldGenSeedand any custom save-folder settings before starting. - Start the server and wait for the new save to finish generating.
- Test connection, spawn, day counter and a new character before announcing that the wipe is complete.
Deleting the whole directory removes Player/, so previous characters do not retain levels, perks, inventory or effects. Keep the backup until players have confirmed that the new world works.

Preserve profiles while rebuilding the world
Some hosted panels document a hybrid workflow: download the old Player/ folder, delete the save directory, let the server create a new save, stop it again, and upload Player/ into the newly generated directory. Host Havoc describes this option in its reset guide. Treat it as provider-specific: panels use different file managers and may impose different ownership or permission rules. Keep a copy of both the original and the new save before attempting the transfer.

Generate a different random map
Changing the seed matters for random-generated worlds only. Set GameWorld=RWG, choose a new WorldGenSeed, and restart after applying the reset method you want. A different seed requests a different terrain layout; retaining the same seed requests the same generated layout when the other world-generation settings match. The dedicated-server setup guide documents the relevant settings at 7D2D hosting, and the reset procedure is outlined by Host Havoc.
Changing a seed does not automatically erase an existing save. If the server continues loading the old GameWorld/GameName directory, use the renamed-save method or remove the appropriate save data first. Back up the old directory so the prior seed and world remain recoverable.
Restart and verify the result
Verification catches an incorrect path or an incomplete shutdown before players build on the wrong world.
- World identity: Confirm the server loads the intended
GameWorldandGame Name, and that an RWG seed change produced the expected new layout. - Character state: For a soft reset, check an existing player’s level, perks, inventory and status effects. For a full wipe, verify that a test character starts at level 1.
- Terrain: Visit a known base location or landmark. A map reset should no longer contain the old region’s structures.
- Clock: If
main.ttpwas removed, check the day, time, weather and Blood Moon counter. If it was retained, those values should continue from the previous save. - Exploration: If
map_*.datwas deleted, each affected player should see an unexplored map while keeping character progress. - Backup: Confirm the offline copy can be opened and contains the original folder before deleting it.
Troubleshoot the common failure branches
The old world still loads
Stop the server and re-check the effective UserDataFolder and SaveGameFolder. You may have edited a similarly named directory while the configuration points elsewhere. Also confirm that the new Game Name was saved exactly and that the panel did not overwrite it on restart.
Players lost their levels or inventory
The Player/ directory was probably deleted, replaced or copied into the wrong save. Stop the server, preserve the current state as a second backup, and restore the original Player/ files only when the target world and player identifiers match. Do not overwrite the only copy of the new save.

The map changed but the day did not
That is expected when only Region/ was removed. The world clock is stored in main.ttp; remove that file in a backed-up, stopped server if the day and Blood Moon cycle must restart.
The map is still explored
Region deletion does not clear per-player exploration. Remove the relevant map_*.dat files to make the map undiscovered while retaining the character files.
The new seed produced no visible change
Seed changes affect RWG generation, not handcrafted worlds, and they do not replace an already loaded save by themselves. Confirm GameWorld=RWG, use a new Game Name or remove the intended save data, then restart after saving the configuration.
Version and mod considerations
Major game-version boundaries and major overhaul-mod changes can require a fresh world, while minor stable updates may not. Compatibility is version-specific, so read the release notes for the exact game build and mods before deciding to wipe. The World Wipe Protocols describes this distinction and cautions against treating every update as equivalent.
When a mod author requires a clean world, use the full-wipe or new-Game Name approach rather than deleting random files. If the mod only changes gameplay and does not require regeneration, a targeted Region/ reset may be sufficient, but retain the backup until the server has run normally with the new version.
Hosted-panel differences
Host Havoc documents both a reversible Game Name rename and a stop-and-delete full wipe. Other providers may label the setting differently, hide the save path behind a file manager, or require a support-side restore. The underlying rules remain the same: stop the process, identify the active path, back up the complete save, then change only the files associated with the desired reset. Do not assume that a button labeled “reset” preserves characters unless the provider states exactly what it removes.

Practical reset checklist
- Announce whether the reset is reversible, a map-only reset or a total wipe.
- Stop the server and wait for a complete shutdown.
- Verify
UserDataFolder,SaveGameFolder,GameWorldandGame Name. - Copy the entire active save outside the live path.
- Choose the file operation: rename the game, remove
Region/, optionally removemain.ttpandmap_*.dat, or delete the entire save folder. - For a different random map, use
GameWorld=RWGand changeWorldGenSeed. - Restart, test the world and character state, and keep the backup until the result is accepted.
