GSTN lists FORM GST ASMT-11 for a reply to a section 61 notice about discrepancies in a return, and FORM GST RFD-09 for a reply to a refund-related show cause notice. Follow the instructions and deadline in your own notice, then check the current GST portal guidance for that notice type.
Identify what kind of notice you received
Before drafting anything, read the notice and note its form number, issuing authority, issue date, relevant tax period, allegations or information requested, response deadline, and filing instructions. The form number and stated purpose matter: a reply intended for one procedure may not fit another.
| Notice or procedure | Reply form listed by GSTN | What it concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Section 61 notice | FORM GST ASMT-11 | Discrepancies intimated in a return |
| Refund-process show cause notice | FORM GST RFD-09 | A reply to a show cause notice in the refund process |
These are examples, not universal reply forms. Other assessment and compliance procedures have their own forms and instructions. If the notice does not clearly identify the procedure or the requested action, check the applicable current portal instructions or seek qualified GST advice before filing.
Prepare a complete, evidence-based reply
Organize the notice alongside the relevant returns, invoices, ledgers, and supporting documents before you write. Match each allegation or request to the facts and records that address it. If you disagree with a discrepancy, explain why and point to the relevant supporting evidence; if information is requested, answer that request directly. Avoid sending an unrelated template or a pile of documents without explaining how they respond to the notice.
#1 Best Overall
For a complex notice, uncertain facts, or potentially significant legal or tax consequences, consider consulting a qualified GST practitioner or tax professional. The notice and its procedure determine what response is appropriate.

GSTN’s form listings identify the relevant forms, but they do not establish one current portal menu route, deadline, or authentication method for every notice. Use the filing channel and authentication instructions stated in your notice, and consult the current GST portal guidance for that specific notice type. Do not rely on an old walkthrough or assume that every reply uses the same online steps.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Check the notice: Confirm its form number, procedure, filing channel, authentication instructions, and deadline.
- Open current official guidance: Use the portal’s instructions relevant to that notice type rather than guessing menu names or selecting a generic reply option.
- Complete the appropriate response: Use the form and process that match the notice, and provide the requested explanations and supporting material.
- Submit and retain proof: Save a copy of the submitted reply and the portal acknowledgement or filing receipt, if provided.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong form: ASMT-11 and RFD-09 relate to different procedures. Confirm the form and purpose in your notice rather than using a generic GST notice reply.
- Assuming a universal deadline: The response deadline depends on the notice and governing procedure. Use the date specified in your notice and verify the applicable instructions; do not apply a deadline found in an unrelated guide.
- Replying before understanding the allegation: Identify the period, issue, and specific information requested, then gather records that address those points.
- Treating portal navigation as permanent: Portal screens and instructions can change. Use current official guidance for the notice type instead of relying on remembered or outdated menu paths.
- Confusing a reply with another action: A reply, payment, and appeal may follow different processes. Check what the notice actually requires before taking action.
- Failing to keep filing proof: Retain the final reply and any acknowledgement or receipt so you can document what was submitted.
