For a production Rails application supervised by systemd, restart Puma with sudo systemctl restart puma.service, then verify it with sudo systemctl status puma.service. If the unit file itself changed, run sudo systemctl daemon-reload first. The exact unit may be application-specific, such as myapp-puma.service; use the name configured on your VPS.

This procedure is different from restarting a development process launched with bin/rails server. Before stopping anything, identify whether systemd owns Puma, another supervisor manages it, or Rails is running in the foreground. Restarting the wrong process can leave the public application unchanged or create a second server competing for the same port.

A Rails application does not have one universal restart command. The correct action depends on the process manager and the way Puma was launched.
| How the app was started | What to restart | Typical interruption |
|---|---|---|
| Puma managed by systemd | The configured systemd unit, for example puma.service or myapp-puma.service |
The listener can briefly close during a normal restart unless socket activation is configured |
| Puma started directly in a shell | Stop the foreground process and launch it again from the Rails application directory | The process and its listener stop until the new process is ready |
| Another supervisor | The supervisor’s own service or restart command | Depends on that supervisor’s policy |
On a typical production Linux VPS, systemd is the relevant supervisor. Puma’s documentation describes systemd as a commonly available init system (PID 1) on many Linux distributions. Do not run bin/rails server alongside a systemd-managed Puma process merely to force a restart; both processes may try to bind the same address.

Find the Puma unit name
If you do not know the unit name, list loaded services whose names contain Puma:
systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -i puma
If that returns nothing, inspect the deployment configuration or unit files under /etc/systemd/system/ and /usr/lib/systemd/system/ as appropriate for the distribution. A unit can be named for the application rather than for Puma itself. Use the exact name, including any instance suffix, in every subsequent command.

- Check the application log. Use the log path configured by Rails, Puma, or the deployment. A systemd unit can be running while the application raises exceptions during boot, so service status alone is not a substitute for the application log.
- Test the application only after the service is healthy. Request the local listener or public URL and check a route that exercises the application. If a reverse proxy is present, verify both the proxy and Puma rather than assuming a successful HTTP response proves the new code loaded.
Why the unit file matters
A production unit normally supplies the executable path, application directory, environment, user, and restart policy. Puma’s documented systemd example uses an absolute Puma executable in ExecStart, sets WorkingDirectory to the application directory, and uses Restart=always. An abbreviated shape looks like this:
[Unit]
Description=Puma application server
After=network.target
[Service]
WorkingDirectory=/path/to/application
ExecStart=/absolute/path/to/puma -C /path/to/application/config/puma.rb
Restart=always
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The paths, user, environment variables, and Puma options must match the installation on your VPS; do not paste this example over a working deployment without checking those values. If you change any of them, run daemon-reload before the restart.
Restarting a foreground Rails server
A process started manually with bin/rails server is controlled by the shell that launched it, not by a systemd unit. The Rails command line starts the server from the application context, so run it from the Rails application’s directory.

- Bring the terminal running the server to the foreground and press
Ctrl-C. Wait for the process to exit. - If the terminal is gone, identify the process owned by the account that launched it and terminate that process using your normal Linux process-management procedure. Confirm that you are targeting the Rails/Puma process, not an unrelated service.
- Change to the application directory.
- Start the server again with the command and options used by the deployment, for example:
bin/rails server - Keep the terminal attached or use the process supervisor intended for that environment. A foreground process normally exits when the SSH session ends unless you deliberately provide session management.
Do not use this method for a production service that systemd already manages. Starting a second foreground server can produce an “address already in use” error or send traffic to a process with the wrong environment.

Choose a restart method when downtime matters
A plain systemctl restart stops the existing service and starts a replacement. During that interval, the listener can be unavailable while Puma initializes. Puma provides other restart mechanisms, but each has prerequisites.
| Method | How it works | When it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal systemd restart | systemd stops and starts the service | Routine maintenance, configuration changes, or a stuck process | Listener sockets can close while the replacement starts |
| Puma hot restart (SIGUSR2) | Puma starts a new process while keeping the server socket open | Deployments where the new process can load alongside the old one | Requests may wait while new code initializes; it still requires a correctly supervised Puma process |
| Puma phased restart (SIGUSR1) | Cluster workers are replaced one at a time | Cluster-mode deployments seeking shorter request interruption | Old and new application versions must safely coexist, including during database changes |
Status-server /restart request |
A request to Puma’s configured status server asks it to restart | Deployments that intentionally expose and secure Puma’s status interface | Requires a configured, protected status server; it is not a universal endpoint |
| systemd socket activation | systemd owns the listening socket while Puma is replaced | Services configured for socket activation and seeking continuous listening | Puma documents that socket activation is not currently available on JRuby |
What a hot restart actually guarantees
Puma describes a hot restart as keeping the server socket open so requests are not lost while new code is deployed. Keeping the socket open does not mean every request completes instantly: workers still need to load the replacement application, and requests can wait during initialization. Confirm that your Puma mode and deployment configuration support the signal before using it.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Phased restarts and database compatibility
A phased restart replaces cluster workers one at a time. That can avoid hanging requests, but old and new workers run concurrently for part of the transition. Database migrations must therefore be backward-compatible with both application versions. A safe sequence commonly adds a new column or behavior first, deploys code that can work with both schemas, then removes obsolete structures in a later deployment. A migration that immediately renames or removes a field still used by old workers can make a phased restart fail even though the Puma command itself is correct.
Socket activation
With systemd socket activation, systemd retains the listening socket while it replaces Puma, allowing incoming connections to continue reaching the handoff point. This requires a matching .socket unit and a Puma service designed to receive the inherited socket; it does not happen merely because a service is managed by systemd. Check the unit definitions before promising zero interruption, and account for Puma’s documented JRuby limitation.
When a restart fails
Use the service state and journal message to choose the next action rather than repeating the same restart command.
The unit is “not found”
- Run
systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -i pumaand inspect the deployment’s service definition. - Check spelling, instance names, and whether the unit is installed but not currently loaded.
- If you created a new unit file, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload, then retry with the exact unit name.
The unit enters a failed state immediately
- Read
sudo journalctl -u <unit>.service -bfrom the first error onward. - Verify that
ExecStartpoints to an executable that exists for the service’s user and Ruby environment. - Verify
WorkingDirectory, release paths, environment files, and file permissions. - Check that the configured Ruby and gem environment contains Puma and the application’s dependencies.
- Correct the reported issue, run
daemon-reloadif the unit changed, and restart once.
The service is running but the site is unavailable
- Check whether Puma is listening on the address and port expected by the reverse proxy or socket configuration.
- Compare the proxy’s upstream target with the listener configured in Puma.
- Read both the Puma journal and Rails application log for boot exceptions or binding errors.
- Test the listener locally on the VPS before troubleshooting DNS, firewalls, or the public URL.
“Address already in use” appears
Another process still owns the configured port or Unix socket. Identify the owner with the Linux socket-inspection tool available on your distribution, then stop the stale process through its supervisor. Do not kill an unknown process simply to make the error disappear; it may be another application or the correctly running Puma instance.
The old code is still being served
- Confirm that the restarted unit’s
WorkingDirectorypoints to the newly deployed release, not an older release directory. - Check the unit’s environment and Ruby executable; a different account or gemset can load a different application.
- Verify that the reverse proxy forwards to the restarted Puma listener rather than a second backend.
- Review the service start time and application log to confirm a new process actually booted.
Permissions, environment, and safety checks
systemctl restart requires permission to manage the unit. Use sudo only with an account authorized for this service, and avoid editing unit files as an unprivileged deployment user unless your operating procedure explicitly permits it.

- Environment variables: systemd does not automatically inherit the variables from your interactive shell. Check the unit’s
EnvironmentorEnvironmentFilesettings and secret-management method. - Release paths: deployments that switch a
currentsymlink need a unit whose working directory follows that symlink, or a deliberate unit update for each release. - Database state: do not start new workers against a schema that their code expects unless migrations have completed and the compatibility strategy is appropriate for the chosen restart type.
- Signals: send Puma-specific signals only to the intended master process and only when the deployment documents cluster mode and signal handling.
- Rollback: if the new release cannot boot, stop exposing it through the supervisor, restore the previously known-good release configuration, run
daemon-reloadif the unit changed, and verify status and logs before reopening traffic.
A repeatable production checklist
- Identify the supervisor and exact Puma unit name.
- Confirm the release, migration state, and intended restart type.
- Inspect the unit if paths or environment recently changed.
- Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadonly when the unit definition changed. - Run
sudo systemctl restart <unit>.service, or use the documented Puma signal for a hot or phased restart. - Run
sudo systemctl status <unit>.service. - Read
sudo journalctl -u <unit>.service -band the application log when status is not healthy. - Test the local listener, then the reverse proxy and public URL.
- Record the restart time and any error so the next deployment has a known baseline.
The practical rule is simple: restart the process that actually serves production traffic. For a systemd-managed Puma deployment, that means the configured unit, followed by status and journal checks. Use Puma’s hot, phased, or socket-activation paths only when their configuration and compatibility requirements are already satisfied.
