The exact restart setup depends on whether the streaming computer runs Windows, macOS or Linux. Since the operating system is not specified here, the safe approach is to separate the three recovery layers, configure the controls that are documented, and choose an OS-specific supervisor rather than treating OBS reconnect as a crash-recovery feature. This guidance applies in India and elsewhere; no India-specific OBS restart behavior is established.
First identify what failed
“The stream stopped” can describe three different problems, and each needs a different control. Check whether OBS is still open before changing settings.

Set up recovery for a dropped connection
- Open OBS settings: in OBS Studio, select Settings > Advanced.
- Check Automatic Reconnect: enable or review the reconnect option and its available retry settings. The overview confirms the setting’s location; use the labels and choices shown by your installed OBS version rather than assuming identical retry values across versions.
- Test with OBS left open: simulate or wait for a connection interruption in a non-critical test stream, then confirm whether OBS attempts to reconnect when network access returns.
This only addresses a connection interruption while the application remains active. A forum discussion about automatically reconnecting after an internet interruption uses similar wording, but such community discussion is not a guarantee for every OBS version or failure: OBS forum: Auto-reconnect failure to YouTube after a network disconnection.
For an OBS crash, use an operating-system process supervisor
If the OBS process exits, an external component must notice that exit and start OBS again. That component needs to run independently of OBS; a script running only inside OBS cannot relaunch the process after it has crashed.

The correct implementation depends on the computer’s operating system, how OBS was installed, and whether recovery must also happen after a full reboot. Those details are not specified here, and the official sources cited in this article do not establish exact Windows, macOS or Linux scheduler, service or script steps. Do not copy a generic command or task-scheduler recipe without confirming that it fits your OS and OBS installation.
- Choose an OS-native supervisor or equivalent automation that can detect the OBS process exiting and start OBS again.
- Decide whether it should restart OBS only after a crash, or also launch it after the computer reboots. These are separate requirements.
- Confirm how OBS should open: the correct profile, scene collection and stream configuration must be available to the restarted process.
- Test the supervisor by deliberately closing or safely terminating OBS during a test, then verify that the process restarts and that you can see its status.
- Keep credentials private. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential/address an encoder uses to send a feed. Do not put it in screenshots, public logs or scripts that others can read.
Do not assume a relaunch resumes the same YouTube broadcast, retains its video URL, or preserves recording continuity. The cited sources do not guarantee those outcomes.

Check YouTube’s response to the encoder feed
- In YouTube Studio, open the stream in the Live Control Room and review its Auto-start and Auto-stop selections.
- Choose the behavior that matches how you intend to control the broadcast when the encoder feed starts or stops. YouTube says these selections can be copied when reusing stream settings.
- Test the complete sequence: OBS connection loss, OBS process restart if applicable, encoder feed returning, and the Live Control Room’s resulting state.
These settings can govern YouTube’s response to encoder data; they do not reopen a crashed OBS application. Keep that distinction in mind when diagnosing a stream that remains offline after the process has restarted.
Test stream quality and diagnose a failed restart
Before relying on automatic recovery during an event, OBS recommends testing the setup, and YouTube recommends testing with audio and video activity similar to the real stream. Monitor stream health and select a quality your available internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video codec options, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are encoder guidance details, not process-supervisor settings: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- OBS stays open but does not reconnect: verify Automatic Reconnect under Settings > Advanced, check that internet access has returned, and inspect OBS’s connection status.
- OBS exited and nothing restarts it: OBS reconnect cannot handle a closed process. Check that the external supervisor is enabled, can see the OBS process exit, and points to the correct OBS installation.
- OBS restarts but YouTube does not receive a feed: inspect OBS’s output and encoder errors, confirm the correct stream key is configured, and check whether YouTube reports a start error. Update the key in the encoder if the error indicates that is needed.
- The feed starts but looks unhealthy: inspect the preview for picture and sound, check encoder errors and CPU load, and assess outbound internet reliability. YouTube’s troubleshooting steps are at Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Encoding or output performance is poor: OBS identifies GPU overload and resource contention as possible issues. Reduce workload and check performance before attributing a crash to a particular cause: OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
