The safest way to restore a Sons of the Forest dedicated server is to stop it, copy the entire server data directory somewhere outside the installation, and then regenerate the default configuration. On a self-managed Windows server, rename the customized dedicatedserver.cfg and start the server again. On rented hosting, use the panel’s reset or reinstall action, selecting its default-values option when available. Reapply only the settings you need, then verify the save slot and connection before players return.
Choose the reset method before touching any files
There are two different reset operations. A configuration reset preserves your installation and gives the server a newly generated settings file. A provider reinstall can replace the entire installation and may remove configuration, mods, and world data. Pick the least destructive method that solves the problem.

| Method | Where it applies | Data preservation | Access needed | Downtime and repeatability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Rename or remove dedicatedserver.cfg |
Self-managed server with filesystem access | Highest: the old file remains available if renamed; the rest of the user-data directory is untouched | Windows filesystem or remote desktop access | Usually a short restart; repeatable whenever you keep an external backup |
| Provider reinstall with “Default values” | Rented server controlled from a hosting panel | Potentially destructive: the provider may delete server files, including worlds and custom files | Provider panel account | Panel-driven; Host Havoc says its process can take up to 20 minutes and the server remains offline |
| Provider file reset | Hosts that expose dedicatedserver.cfg in a file manager |
Depends on what you remove and what the host backs up | Panel file manager or SFTP | Similar to a manual restart, but labels and paths vary by host |
If you only need to undo a bad password, player limit, game mode, or other setting, use the file-based method. Treat a reinstall as a last resort or as a deliberate clean-server operation.
Back up the complete server data directory
Do this while the server is stopped, before renaming, deleting, or reinstalling anything. A configuration-only change can still expose a save-slot mistake, and a panel reinstall can remove the world entirely.

Find the live directory on Windows
The documented default for a self-managed Windows dedicated server is:
C:Users<user>AppDataLocalLowEndnightSonsOfTheForestDS
Replace <user> with the Windows account that runs the server. If your launch command includes -userdatapath, that argument overrides the default; back up the directory named by the argument instead. Do not assume the installation folder is the data folder.
Stop the process cleanly
- Use the server’s normal stop command or hosting-panel Stop button.
- Wait until the process has exited and the panel reports it offline.
- Do not edit JSON while the server is running; the process can write over your changes or leave a partially written file.
Make an external, restorable copy
Copy the entire SonsOfTheForestDS directory, not just the configuration file. It contains configuration, saves, and logs. Store the copy outside the live directory—for example, on another local drive or removable storage—and give it a date-and-purpose name. Open the copy and confirm that it contains the expected save data before proceeding.
A backup in the same directory is not protection against a reinstall that removes that directory. Keep at least one copy that the reset operation cannot reach.
Reset a self-managed Windows server
1. Preserve the existing configuration
In the live data directory, locate dedicatedserver.cfg. Renaming is safer than deleting: change it to something such as dedicatedserver.cfg.backup. The renamed file lets you recover a password, administrator entry, or custom game setting if you later discover that you still need it.

If Windows hides extensions, enable View > Show > File name extensions in File Explorer before renaming. Otherwise you could accidentally create a file named dedicatedserver.cfg.backup.cfg.

- Start the dedicated server with the same launch command you normally use.
- Allow it to finish initialization rather than stopping it immediately.
- Stop it again after the default file has been created and the startup log shows no configuration parse error.
- Open the newly created
dedicatedserver.cfgand confirm that it is a JSON document.
The configuration files are created after the server has started at least once. Empty or null values in the documented configuration are interpreted as defaults, but deleting arbitrary braces, commas, or quotation marks creates invalid JSON. Regeneration avoids hand-editing syntax.
3. Reapply only essential values
Open the new file in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Restore only values your group actually needs. Common entries include:
ServerNamefor the name shown in the server browser.MaxPlayersfor the intended player limit.Passwordif the server should not be public.SaveSlotandSaveModeto select and manage the world.GameModefor the desired game rules.SaveIntervalfor the save cadence.GameSettingsandCustomGameModeSettingsfor supported gameplay options.
Leave network ports, IP binding, and options you do not understand at their generated values. Change one group of settings at a time so a later problem can be traced to a specific edit.
What dedicatedserver.cfg controls
dedicatedserver.cfg is JSON, not the older ServerSettings.ini format used by unrelated games. The example configuration begins with network and identity fields such as IpAddress, GamePort, QueryPort, BlobSyncPort, and ServerName. It then defines MaxPlayers, Password, LanOnly, SaveSlot, SaveMode, and GameMode, followed by save, logging, and gameplay-setting objects.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. Editing an INI file, copying syntax from another game, or adding comments inside the JSON can prevent the server from starting. Keep the generated structure and edit values only.
Save selection is the highest-risk setting
A reset does not automatically mean “start a new world.” The SaveSlot value determines which world the server opens. Before players connect, compare the selected slot with the slot used by the old configuration and inspect the available saves in the backed-up directory. If the fresh server appears empty, stop it immediately and correct the slot rather than allowing new progress to overwrite the wrong world.
Reset a rented server from its hosting panel
1. Stop the instance
Use the provider panel’s Stop action and wait for the status to show offline. Do not press Reinstall while the game process is still running.
2. Identify the provider’s reset control
Panel names differ. Host Havoc documents a More > Reinstall flow and instructs customers to leave the choice at Default values unless they have a specific reason to choose another option. Its support warning states: “Before you start: Reinstalling will delete all server files except backups and re-downloads a fresh default installation.” Treat that as a deletion operation, not as a harmless settings toggle.

Some hosts provide a file manager instead. Sparked Host identifies /home/container/serverconfig/dedicatedserver.cfg as the file used to activate default settings. If your host exposes that path, download a copy first, then follow the host’s documented reset procedure rather than assuming another provider’s buttons exist.

3. Save anything the panel will not retain
Download the world, configuration, administrator list, and any required mod or plugin files through the panel’s backup or file manager. Check the provider’s retention rules: a “backup” may be stored separately from the live files, may expire, or may not include every custom file.
4. Run the reset and wait for completion
Start the reinstall or default-values action only after the backup is outside the live installation. The server will be offline during the operation. Host Havoc states that its reinstall can take up to 20 minutes; that is a provider-specific estimate, not a universal duration. Do not repeatedly click the action while the first job is running.

When the fresh instance is online, set the server name, password, administrators, and any required network or visibility option. Restore a world only after confirming that the clean default server starts normally. Uploading a save before this check makes it harder to tell whether a failure comes from the reset or from the world files.
Reset a rented server without losing the world
If the objective is “default settings, same world,” avoid a full reinstall when the panel offers a configuration-file reset. Download the current world first, stop the server, reset or rename only dedicatedserver.cfg, start the server with defaults, and then set the original SaveSlot. Keep the world files untouched.
If the provider offers only Reinstall, make two independent copies of the save: one downloaded to your computer and one retained in the provider’s backup area. After reinstalling, start the empty default server once. Stop it, upload the saved world to the provider’s documented save location, set the matching SaveSlot, and start again. Never overwrite the only copy while testing an upload.

Verify the reset before inviting players
- Check the file: open
dedicatedserver.cfgand confirm valid JSON, the intended name, password policy, save slot, save mode, and game mode. - Check the startup log: look for configuration parse errors, missing directories, port-binding errors, or messages indicating a different data path.
- Check discovery: confirm the server appears with the expected name and visibility. A server set to
LanOnlywill not behave like a public listing. - Use a test account: connect before announcing the reset to the whole group.
- Check the world in-game: verify the spawn, structures, inventory state, and progression belong to the intended save.
- Check persistence: make a harmless change, trigger a save, stop cleanly, restart, and confirm the change remains.
Troubleshooting common reset failures
The old settings keep coming back
You may have renamed a file in the installation directory instead of the user-data directory, or the launch command may point to a different location with -userdatapath. Stop the server, inspect the command, and check the timestamp of the file the process actually reads.

Restore the backed-up configuration and start once to prove the installation still works. If the backup starts, compare the new file for missing commas, braces, quotes, or unsupported keys. Do not paste comments into JSON. Regenerate again and reapply changes one at a time.
The server starts but shows the wrong world
Stop immediately and correct SaveSlot. Confirm that the world files were copied to the provider’s expected location and that you did not create a new save during testing. Use the external backup if the wrong slot has already been written.
Players cannot find or join the server
Check the generated network fields, provider port assignments, password, and LanOnly value. A valid configuration file does not guarantee that a rented host has assigned the same ports after reinstall. Read the startup log for the address and ports the process bound to, then compare those with the panel’s connection information.
The panel reinstall appears stuck
Allow the provider’s stated maintenance window to elapse before taking action. Host Havoc’s documented estimate is up to 20 minutes. If the panel still reports an active job afterward, capture the job status and contact the host rather than launching a second reinstall.
Which settings should you restore first?
Use this order to reduce the chance of locking players out or opening the wrong save:
- Save identity: set
SaveSlotandSaveMode. - Access: set
Password, administrators, and visibility. - Server identity: set
ServerName. - Gameplay: set
GameMode,GameSettings, andCustomGameModeSettings. - Capacity and saves: set
MaxPlayersand, if needed,SaveInterval.
After each meaningful change, restart cleanly and perform the connection and save checks. Keeping the regenerated file as a known-good baseline makes future resets faster and gives you a clear recovery point.
