A secure self-hosted OpenClaw deployment keeps the Gateway on loopback, requires authentication for every control path, separates users who do not share the same level of trust, and treats every credential, log, and transcript as sensitive. Start with openclaw security audit, restrict chat access with pairing and allowlists, remove tools you do not need, enable a sandbox for untrusted work, and use a private mesh VPN or authenticated reverse proxy instead of exposing a public Gateway port.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The practical goal is not to make OpenClaw unreachable. It is to make each connection intentional, each execution boundary understandable, and every change auditable.

What a hardened OpenClaw install looks like
OpenClaw’s Gateway is the control plane. Its documented responsibilities include channel connections, configuration, credentials, and the control-plane API. A compromise of the Gateway therefore affects much more than one chat session: it can expose connected accounts, alter policy, reveal conversation history, or invoke tools that the Gateway is allowed to use.
The safest default is a private Gateway with a narrow tool set and one clearly defined trust boundary. On a regular host installation, the Gateway binds to loopback. Unknown direct-message senders receive a pairing code instead of having their message processed, and group interaction is normally allowlisted and protected by a mention gate. Preserve those defaults unless you have a specific, documented reason to change them.

Use one Gateway trust boundary per group of users
OpenClaw documentation states: “One trust boundary per gateway.” Treat that as an architecture rule, not a suggestion about naming. A Gateway should serve people and automations that are allowed to share the same credentials, tools, filesystem view, and conversation state.
When one Gateway is appropriate
A single Gateway is reasonable for one operator, or for a small team whose members have the same authority and are subject to the same operating rules. Even then, give each person an explicit account or channel allowlist rather than assuming that a private chat server is sufficient protection.
The Tool Desk

Create separate Gateways when users have different privileges, when outside contributors can submit content, when an automation handles untrusted customer material, or when two projects must not share credentials and transcripts. Use separate credentials and, where practical, separate operating-system users or hosts. A container boundary can reduce accidental interaction, but it does not remove the need to separate credentials and policy.
Why shared state is risky
The Gateway owns the control plane. If two groups share one instance, a broad filesystem tool, browser session, plugin, or credential can become a cross-tenant path. Segmentation makes the blast radius explicit: a problem in one Gateway does not automatically grant access to another Gateway’s channels, files, or tokens.
Prepare a dedicated host or operating-system account
Begin with an account and host that are dedicated to OpenClaw’s role. Do not run the Gateway from a personal workstation that contains unrelated SSH keys, browser profiles, source repositories, or private documents. If a separate host is not possible, create a dedicated operating-system user, keep its home directory narrow, and ensure that the service cannot read other users’ data.
Pre-install checklist
- Apply current security updates to the host and its container runtime, if used.
- Disable interactive access for the service account unless administration requires it.
- Use a long, unique system credential and store administrative recovery material separately.
- Limit inbound host firewall rules to the management path and the private network path you actually use.
- Keep time synchronization enabled so log timestamps and credential-expiration checks are meaningful.
- Decide where configuration, credentials, logs, transcripts, and backups will live before onboarding channels.
Record the intended trust boundary, network path, tool policy, and backup location in deployment notes. Those notes let you distinguish an approved change from configuration drift later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRun a baseline security audit before changing exposure
After installation, run:
openclaw security audit
Save the output with the deployment notes. Read every finding before changing a bind address, enabling a plugin, adding a tool, or connecting a new channel. The audit is most useful as a before-and-after record: establish the initial posture, make one class of changes, and audit again.

What to look for in the findings
- Listeners that are reachable beyond loopback or the intended private interface.
- Missing or overly broad authentication and pairing rules.
- Group or channel policies that permit interaction without an explicit allowlist or mention gate.
- Tools that can modify files, browse, make network requests, control the host, or execute commands without a business need.
- Sandbox settings that are disabled or weaker than the content you plan to process.
- Secrets stored in locations readable by other users, containers, or backup jobs.
Do not dismiss a warning simply because the host is behind a router. Port forwarding, cloud security groups, container publishing, and reverse-proxy rules can change exposure without changing the OpenClaw configuration itself.
Keep the Gateway off the public internet
Loopback is the safest default
Keep the Gateway bound to loopback when all clients run on the same host. A loopback listener is not reachable from another machine, which removes an entire class of unsolicited scans and authentication attacks. Local applications still need authentication because malware or a compromised user account on the same host could attempt to connect.
Use a private mesh VPN for remote administration
When you need access from another device, prefer the private mesh-VPN path documented for OpenClaw rather than forwarding a Gateway port from the internet. A mesh network gives you a private address and an identity-aware access policy while allowing the Gateway to avoid a public bind. Restrict the VPN ACL to the operators and devices that require access; do not treat membership in the mesh as a replacement for Gateway authentication.
Use an authenticated reverse proxy when a web entry point is required
If an organizational requirement calls for a reverse proxy, terminate TLS there, enforce authentication, and forward only the required paths to the Gateway. Keep the upstream listener private. Document the proxy’s identity provider, certificate renewal, allowed source networks, request-size limits, and timeout policy. Test that an unauthenticated request is rejected before it reaches OpenClaw.
Why a public bind is not a security feature
Binding the Gateway to a public interface does not add authentication, encryption, or authorization. It only increases the number of systems that can attempt to reach the control plane. If a temporary public exposure is unavoidable, treat it as an incident-level change: restrict the source addresses, use a strong authenticated front end, monitor access, and run the security audit before and after the change.
Control who can talk to OpenClaw
Direct messages: pairing first
Keep the unknown-sender pairing flow enabled. An unrecognized sender should receive a pairing code and no tool or conversational action should run until an operator approves that pairing. Approve only the identity you intended to add, and remove stale pairings when people leave a project or lose a device.
Groups: explicit allowlists and a mention gate
Group chats are noisy and easy to misconfigure. Allow only named groups or channels, and require a mention gate where the platform supports it. The gate prevents OpenClaw from treating every ambient message as an instruction. Review whether quoted text, attachments, and forwarded messages can reach the Gateway as content, and keep the same trust assumptions for those inputs as for a direct message.

Separate credentials by Gateway and role
Never reuse one Gateway token, channel credential, or bot identity across trust boundaries. Per-Gateway credentials make revocation targeted and make logs easier to interpret. If a credential is exposed, rotate it at the provider and in the Gateway’s configuration, then remove the old value from backups and deployment tooling where feasible.
Reduce the tool and extension attack surface
OpenClaw can only use the capabilities you grant it, so begin with a deny-by-default mindset. Remove tools that are not needed for the Gateway’s purpose.
Review high-impact capabilities
- Control-plane tools: limit administration, configuration changes, and account-management actions to a small operator set.
- Filesystem tools: expose a dedicated working directory, not a home directory or the host root. Make sensitive paths unreadable.
- Browser tools: separate automation profiles from personal sessions and never reuse a profile that contains saved passwords or active administrative cookies.
- Network tools: restrict outbound destinations when the workload does not need arbitrary internet access.
- Execution tools: avoid host command execution for routine tasks; if execution is essential, place it behind a sandbox or a separate worker boundary.
Vet plugins and skills
Install plugins and skills only from sources you trust and can review. Check what permissions they request, where they write data, which network destinations they contact, and whether they can invoke other tools. Pin versions where practical, record the approval decision, and remove extensions that are no longer maintained or needed. A useful feature is not a reason to grant unrestricted filesystem or network access.
Enable sandboxing for untrusted content or code
OpenClaw documentation is explicit: “Sandboxing is off by default.” If the Gateway will process untrusted files, copied instructions, code, web content, or messages from users outside your trust boundary, enable a documented sandbox backend before giving it execution-oriented tools.
What the documented container profile provides
The default Docker and Podman profile is designed to reduce the impact of a tool escape or malicious workload: it has no network, a read-only root filesystem, all capabilities dropped, and a non-root user. These controls are strongest when you do not add broad writable mounts, privileged flags, host networking, or extra capabilities.
Configure for the workload, not convenience
- Keep the sandbox network-disabled unless the task demonstrably needs network access.
- Mount only the working directory required for the task, and make inputs read-only when possible.
- Do not mount the host’s Docker socket, SSH directory, credential stores, or entire home directory.
- Preserve the non-root identity and dropped capabilities from the default profile.
- Separate disposable build output from durable secrets and production state.
Confirm the effective posture
After enabling or changing the backend, run:
openclaw sandbox explain
Use the explanation to verify the actual runtime policy rather than assuming that a configuration file was applied. Then run openclaw security audit again and retain both outputs. If the effective policy differs from what you intended, stop before processing untrusted content and correct the backend or its launch parameters.
Harden Docker and Podman deployments
Use official images and controlled versions
Pull OpenClaw images from the official GitHub Container Registry or Docker Hub locations documented by the project. Avoid unofficial mirrors, repackaged images, and images whose provenance you cannot verify. Pin a tested image version where practical instead of silently tracking a moving tag; record the digest or version in deployment notes so a rollback is possible.

Understand published ports
A container can be private while the host publishes it publicly. Review every published port, the host interface it binds to, and the cloud firewall in front of it. On a VPS or public host, follow the project’s network-exposure guidance and inspect the Docker DOCKER-USER firewall chain. Policies placed there are evaluated before Docker’s own forwarding rules, making that chain the appropriate control point for restricting container traffic.
Keep the container profile narrow
- Retain the no-network, read-only-root, dropped-capability, non-root defaults unless a documented requirement justifies an exception.
- Use explicit, minimal volume mounts and review their read/write mode.
- Do not grant privileged mode or host-level devices to solve an application problem.
- Separate the Gateway container from any worker that needs broader build or network permissions.
- Back up configuration and credentials through a controlled process rather than by mounting an entire host directory.
Protect configuration, credentials, logs, and transcripts
The Gateway owns credentials and control-plane state, and Docker onboarding generates a Gateway token in a .env file. Treat that file as a secret. Apply restrictive ownership and permissions, keep it out of public repositories and shared chat, and ensure that backup jobs do not make it readable by unrelated users.
Files that need protection
- The
.envfile and any deployment manifests containing tokens or provider keys. - OpenClaw configuration and credential directories.
- Channel session data, pairing records, and browser or plugin state.
- Logs and transcripts, which may contain prompts, personal data, tool arguments, and returned secrets.
- Backups, crash dumps, temporary exports, and container volume snapshots.
Handle rotation deliberately
Rotate a token immediately if it may have appeared in a log, transcript, terminal capture, image layer, backup, or support ticket. Revoke the old credential at the provider, update the Gateway, restart only the affected service, and verify that the old value no longer works. Keep a dated record of the rotation without writing the secret itself into that record.
Limit retention
Set log and transcript retention to the shortest period that supports operations, troubleshooting, and compliance. Restrict read access, encrypt backups, and test restoration with a non-production copy. If a transcript is exported for debugging, remove credentials and unnecessary personal data before sharing it.

Choose a deployment pattern consciously
| Pattern | Exposure surface | Trust model | Execution isolation | Credential handling | Operational notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Loopback on a dedicated host | Local host only | Single operator or one tightly controlled team | Host process; add a sandbox for untrusted work | Local files protected by the service account and host permissions | Simplest perimeter; remote access requires a secure administration path |
| Private mesh VPN | Private overlay network | Known operators and devices governed by VPN ACLs | Host, Docker/Podman, SSH, or OpenShell according to workload | Gateway authentication remains required; VPN is an additional layer | Usually preferable to port-forwarding for remote use |
| Authenticated reverse proxy | Proxy is reachable; Gateway stays private | Users authenticated by the proxy and OpenClaw policy | Host or container sandbox behind the proxy | TLS and identity provider at the edge; Gateway credentials remain separate | Requires careful TLS, header, source-network, and update management |
| Direct public Gateway bind | Internet-facing listener | Mixed and potentially adversarial traffic | Must be strongly isolated; still carries the largest network risk | Authentication is mandatory but does not remove scanning and abuse risk | Avoid unless there is no safer architecture and compensating controls are documented |
The right row depends on more than convenience. Compare the exposure surface, who is trusted, how execution is isolated, where credentials live, how images and updates are verified, and whether an auditor can reconstruct the changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the installation after every meaningful change
Security hardening is a process of checking the effective state, not a one-time configuration edit. Re-run the audit after changing any listener, reverse-proxy rule, VPN policy, channel allowlist, tool permission, plugin, sandbox backend, container image, or firewall rule.
Perform functional security tests
- From an unapproved direct-message identity, confirm that OpenClaw returns a pairing challenge and does not process the request.
- From an approved identity, confirm that the expected channel works and that an unapproved group or channel is ignored.
- In a group, send a non-mentioned message and verify that the mention gate prevents an unintended response.
- Attempt to reach the Gateway from a network that should not have access; verify that the listener is unreachable or rejected by the edge policy.
- Ask the sandbox to process a harmless test workload and inspect
openclaw sandbox explainfor network, filesystem, user, and capability settings. - Review logs for rejected pairings, unexpected source addresses, tool failures, and configuration changes.
Keep the test results with the audit output. A passing test is evidence about one moment and one path; it does not replace periodic review of credentials, images, plugins, and host updates.

Respond to suspected exposure
If a token, transcript, container, or listener may have been exposed, contain first and investigate second.
- Disconnect the affected Gateway from public and private networks while preserving the host for investigation.
- Revoke and rotate Gateway, channel, provider, VPN, and plugin credentials that could have been accessed.
- Disable or remove newly added plugins, skills, tools, pairings, and reverse-proxy routes until they are reviewed.
- Preserve relevant logs and configuration snapshots, noting their timestamps and storage locations.
- Inspect transcripts and tool calls for data access, outbound requests, configuration changes, and command execution.
- Rebuild from a known-good host or official image when integrity cannot be established; do not rely on deleting one suspicious file.
- Restore only the minimum required state, verify the sandbox and network posture, and run the security audit before reconnecting channels.
- Notify affected users or service providers if credentials or personal data may have been disclosed.
Keep the hardening posture over time
After installation or a policy change
- Run
openclaw security auditand archive the output. - Confirm the listener, VPN or proxy path, channel allowlists, mention gate, tool set, and sandbox policy.
- Check that credentials and state files have the intended owner and permissions.
- Record image versions, plugin versions, and the person who approved the change.
On a recurring schedule
- Review pairings, group memberships, VPN ACLs, and reverse-proxy accounts; remove stale access.
- Review logs and transcripts for unexpected tool use, rejected identities, and new source addresses.
- Patch the host, container runtime, OpenClaw image, plugins, and skills through a controlled process.
- Test that backups can be restored without exposing secrets to the test environment.
- Revisit whether every filesystem, browser, network, and execution tool is still necessary.
When the trust model changes
A new customer, contractor, automation, or untrusted data source can invalidate an earlier design. Split the Gateway or move the workload into a more isolated worker rather than quietly broadening the permissions of an existing instance.
Common hardening mistakes and their fixes
“It is behind NAT, so authentication is optional.”
NAT reduces unsolicited inbound traffic but does not protect local clients, forwarded ports, reverse proxies, VPN peers, or a compromised host. Keep Gateway authentication and channel policy enabled at every layer.
“The container is isolated, so mounting the host home directory is harmless.”
A broad writable mount turns a container compromise into a host-data compromise. Mount only the working directory required for the task, prefer read-only inputs, and never mount host credentials or the container runtime socket.
“Everyone in the chat is trusted.”
Membership changes, forwarded messages, compromised accounts, and accidental sharing make that assumption fragile. Use pairing, explicit group allowlists, and a mention gate; split mixed-trust users into separate Gateways.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The default sandbox is enabled because Docker is installed.”
Sandboxing is not automatic merely because a container runtime exists. Enable the documented backend, inspect the effective policy with openclaw sandbox explain, and confirm the result with the security audit.
“A copied image tag is good enough.”
Unverified mirrors and moving tags weaken provenance and rollback. Use official registries, pin versions where practical, and retain the version or digest used in production.
