You can restore Minecraft only if an earlier copy of the world exists—and the steps depend on whether you play Java or Bedrock, your platform, and whether the world is on a Realm or stored locally. For a Bedrock Realm, restore a selected backup in the Realm interface. On Xbox, Minecraft’s documented recovery route replaces an outdated local copy with the latest cloud save; it does not let you pick an arbitrary historical version.
Before restoring, identify where the world is saved
Check the edition, platform, account, and world you are using, then locate the earlier copy you want. It may be a manual or automatic Realm backup, an Xbox cloud save, or a local or platform backup. These are different recovery paths, not one universal Minecraft rollback button.

- Bedrock Realm: Choose a manual or automatic backup from the Realm’s World tab.
- Xbox: The documented procedure syncs the latest cloud copy to the console when its local copy is out of date.
- Java or other Bedrock worlds: Use the official backup guide for the edition and platform where the world is stored.
Minecraft’s Backup & Restore hub lists dedicated instructions for Java, Bedrock on Windows, Android and Apple devices, and cloud saves on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. The procedure varies by platform, so follow the guide matching your setup.
Restore a Bedrock Realm backup
Use this path when the world is hosted on a Realm and the backup you want appears in its save list.
#1 Best Overall
- Open Minecraft and select Play, then Realms.
- Open the Realm Hub and select the Realm’s World tab.
- Choose Manual or Automatic, depending on where the desired backup is listed.
- Open the three-dot menu next to that save and select Restore save.
Minecraft Help says the Realm returns to the state captured by that save, including its builds and items. Progress made after the selected backup is not included in the restored state, so confirm the save you intend to use before restoring. See Minecraft’s Realm backup instructions.
Sync an Xbox world from cloud storage
This procedure is for an outdated local Xbox save when the wanted copy is available in cloud storage. Minecraft Help describes saves as potentially cloud-only, local-only, or synced, and says saves are tied to the Microsoft account. The procedure does not offer a list of historical cloud revisions to choose from: it syncs the latest cloud copy.

- On Xbox Home, go to My games & apps > See all.
- Highlight Minecraft, open the Menu, and choose Manage game > Saved data.
- Choose the relevant profile, then select Delete from console.
- Launch Minecraft and let it sync and download the latest cloud save.
Deleting from console removes the console copy, so use this route only when the desired save is in the cloud and the correct profile is selected. It is not a way to recover an older version if the cloud copy has already advanced. Details are in Minecraft Help’s Xbox cloud-save instructions.
Use the platform guide for local Java and other Bedrock worlds
If the world is not on a Realm and is not covered by the Xbox cloud-sync route, choose the matching entry in Minecraft’s Backup & Restore hub. It links to instructions for Java local backups and finding a Java backup, Bedrock local backups on Windows, Android and Apple devices, and cloud saves on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. Follow the guide for the edition and platform where the world is saved; the exact steps differ.
Rank #3
If a local world has no backup, the official instructions linked here do not establish a safe recovery procedure for restoring an earlier state. Avoid experimenting with save files based on an assumed file path or recovery method.

What if no earlier copy exists?
A restore needs an earlier backup or cloud copy. The Realm and Xbox procedures above work with copies that are available in their respective save lists or storage. If there is no previous copy, these documented routes cannot return the world to an earlier state.
