Yes. To abandon your settlement in No Man’s Sky, use the in-game Retire as Overseer option. Open Quick Menu → Settlements Register, select the settlement, open Settlement History, then choose Retire as Overseer. An active mission that requires the settlement can prevent you from surrendering it.
How to retire from your settlement
- Open the Quick Menu and select Settlements Register.
- Select the settlement you want to leave.
- Open Settlement History.
- Choose Retire as Overseer and confirm the action if prompted.
You can also access the Settlements Register from the Administrative Terminal in a settlement you manage. The in-game action is called “Retire as Overseer”; “abandon” is the common way players describe leaving the role. Hello Games’ Beacon 5.7 update notes confirm that retirement is supported and that the register is available from the Quick Menu.

What can block retirement?
A settlement cannot be surrendered while an active mission requires it. If the option is unavailable, check for an active settlement-management mission or an unfinished task tied to that settlement. Hello Games added this restriction in Beacon 5.7.
There is no established general requirement to clear the settlement’s debt first. The official update notes do not set debt repayment as a condition for retiring.

What happens when you retire?
Retiring ends your role as that settlement’s Overseer. The official notes do not fully specify what happens afterward to every building, resource, settlement state, or item of progress, so the action should not be treated as a confirmed way to delete the settlement or as a guarantee that its progress will be preserved, reset, or available to reclaim.
Do you need to leave one settlement to claim another?
Not if you are below the limit. Beacon 5.7 allows players to oversee up to four settlements, so you can take another without retiring from your current one as long as you have not reached that cap. The Settlements Register shows managed settlements, including their status and history.

If the retirement option or register appears stuck
Beacon 5.71 fixed issues with the retirement progress dial and settlement history display. Beacon 5.73 fixed settlements lingering in the register after retirement. If the interface does not respond or the register still shows a retired settlement, update the game and try again through the Settlements Register or the settlement’s Administrative Terminal.
Frontiers 3.6 introduced settlements, initially managed through the central monument and, after construction, the Overseer’s Office terminal. The later Beacon update added the register and retirement action.
