To play an older version of Minecraft, create a separate installation for it in the Minecraft Launcher, then select that installation before starting the game. These instructions apply to Minecraft: Java Edition; they are not instructions for Bedrock Edition, console, or mobile. Back up your world first: opening a world from a newer version in an older one may permanently damage it.
How to choose an older Java Edition version
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Installations.
- Select New.
- Give the installation a name, then choose the version you want from the VERSION list.
- Select Create to save the installation.
- Return to the launcher’s main page and select the installation you just created before launching the game.

Back up your world before opening it
Minecraft Help warns that opening a current world in an older game version may permanently damage it. Make a separate copy of the world and open only that copy in the older version; leave your original save untouched. The launcher steps change the game version you run, but they do not guarantee that a world will remain compatible or repair a damaged save.
Downloading a copy of a Java Realm world
If the world is on a Java Edition Realm, Minecraft Help’s documented route to obtain a copy is Minecraft Realms > Configure > World Backups > Download Latest. The downloaded world is added to your single-player worlds. This gives you a copy to work with; it is not a way to restore the Realm to an older game version. If the version you want is not listed
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal workaround for a version missing from the launcher’s list. Avoid assuming that an unofficial download or another edition’s instructions are safe or applicable. The documented method and version-selection steps cover Java Edition through the Minecraft Launcher.
Does this method work for Bedrock, console, or mobile?
No. The documented procedure in this guide is specifically for Minecraft: Java Edition in the Minecraft Launcher. The sources cited here do not establish equivalent rollback steps for Bedrock Edition, console, or mobile, so do not follow the Java launcher instructions for those versions.
