Kelvin and Virginia do not normally respawn after they die. Once either companion is dead, the reliable recovery choices are to spawn a replacement with the in-game Admin Panel, restore or edit a PC save, or use a save editor. Dedicated-server administrators must stop the server and modify the downloaded save archive before restarting it. Back up the complete save before trying any method: a replacement can reset Virginia’s relationship, while a save restoration can remove later world progress.
What happens when Kelvin or Virginia dies?
Death is persistent for both companions in a normal Sons of the Forest save. Loading the same save, sleeping, leaving the island, or waiting for a new day does not bring either character back. Kevin Thielenhaus of Gameranx describes the consequence this way: “If one or both of them dies, they’ll be gone from your save file permanently.” Treat that as a description of ordinary gameplay, not as a promise that the underlying files cannot be changed.

Choose the least destructive recovery method

If you only need a companion quickly and can tolerate rebuilding Virginia’s trust, the Admin Panel is the shortest route. If preserving the exact relationship and earlier companion state matters more than recent building progress, an older save is safer. File editing and editors offer more control but require the most careful backups and version checking.

Before you change anything: make a recoverable backup
Close the game before copying or editing files. Keep the original folder or downloaded server archive untouched, and make a second working copy for experiments. Give the backup a date and a clear label such as before-companion-revival. A backup is useful only if you know which copy is original and can restore it without the game writing over it.
- For a local PC save, copy the entire save folder, not just one JSON file.
- For multiplayer, identify whether you are working with the host’s
multiplayersave or a client’smultiplayerclientdata. - For a dedicated server, download the complete current archive before stopping or editing anything.
- Do not test a command repeatedly on your only copy; duplicate companion records can create spawn or startup problems.
Method 1: Use the built-in Admin Panel
This is the quickest researched method because it does not require opening JSON files. Gameranx documents the following sequence for a loaded save.

- Type
cheatstickwhile in the game. The guide reports that no confirmation message appears, so the lack of a message is not proof that the command failed. - Press
F1to open the Admin Panel. - Run
addcharacter robbyto spawn Kelvin. Kelvin’s internal character name for this command isrobby. - Run
addcharacter virginiato spawn Virginia. - Save the game, leave or reload it, and confirm that the intended companion remains present.
Important Admin Panel cautions
Use each addcharacter command once. The documented command can create additional copies if repeated, and duplicate companions are difficult to clean up safely. Keep the pre-command backup until you have loaded the save successfully several times.
A spawned Virginia may not retain the friendship or relationship level from the dead character. You may need to rebuild trust through ordinary interaction. The command is therefore best understood as a replacement spawn, not a perfect restoration of every companion variable.

If F1 does nothing, verify that you typed cheatstick in the game world rather than into a chat box or another menu, then reload the backed-up copy and try again. Do not keep issuing the spawn command while uncertain whether the panel accepted it.
Method 2: Restore an older PC save
An older save in which the companion is alive is the most conservative way to recover the original state. It also has the clearest trade-off: everything that happened after that save can disappear.

Inside that location, multiplayer work can involve separate multiplayer and multiplayerclient directories. Work out which side owns the authoritative save before replacing anything; editing a client copy will not repair the host’s world.
Restore the donor save
- Close the game and copy the entire current save folder to a safe backup location.
- Locate a save made before Kelvin or Virginia died and copy that donor save separately.
- Identify the donor save’s
savedata.json. - Replace the target save’s corresponding
savedata.jsonwith the donor copy, retaining the original target file in your backup. - Start the game and inspect the world, companion, inventory, and recent construction.
The Steam Community procedure warns that transferring savedata.json can roll back other world state. You may lose building work, item changes, exploration, or events completed after the donor save. If the result is unacceptable, close the game and restore the untouched target folder rather than trying to merge files by guesswork.

Method 3: Edit the dead-state fields
Other community guides describe changing the companion flags in GameStateSaveData.json. The documented fields are:

- Back up the entire save folder and close the game.
- Open a working copy of
GameStateSaveData.jsonin a plain-text editor that preserves JSON formatting. - Find the applicable field and change only its Boolean value from
truetofalse. - Save the edited copy using the original filename and location.
- Load the save and check whether the companion appears and behaves normally.
File names and layouts can change with game updates. If a field is missing, do not invent a replacement key or paste a structure from an unrelated version. Restore your backup or use an editor explicitly compatible with the save format you have. A dead flag is not necessarily the only state controlling entity position, health, inventory, or relationship, so a flag-only repair may not produce a fully usable companion.

Method 4: Use a save editor
Thunderstore lists SOTFEdit v0.10.2 as an open-source save-game editor with a “Revive Virginia & Kelvin” function. This is optional, not a requirement. A tool can be safer than hand-editing when it understands the exact format, but it can also become unusable after an update.

- Close the game, and stop a server before opening its files.
- Keep a complete untouched backup outside the editor’s working directory.
- Use the dedicated revive function rather than changing unrelated values.
- Save to a new copy when the editor permits it, then test that copy before replacing the live save.
If the editor cannot read the file, reports an unknown format, or shows no revive option, stop. Do not force a conversion or save over the original. A version mismatch can damage more than the companion record.

A dedicated server is not repaired by editing your local client folder. The server operator must work on the server’s authoritative save. A Supercraft guide dated March 9, 2026 describes this general workflow; its exact fields are third-party, version-sensitive instructions rather than official Endnight documentation.
- Stop the dedicated server so it cannot write a new autosave while you work.
- Download a copy of the current save archive from the host control panel or server file system.
- Make an untouched backup of that downloaded archive.
- Open the working archive and locate
GameStateSaveData.jsonand, where the host’s layout requires it,SaveData.json. - Check the dead-state fields
IsRobbyDeadandIsVirginiaDead; the guide identifiestrueas the dead value. - Restore the appropriate companion state and health data only when those fields exist in the current save format.
- If the procedure requires entity-state editing, the guide identifies companion type ID
9for Kelvin and10for Virginia. - Upload the edited archive, remove or handle autosave files exactly as required by the host’s instructions, and restart the server.
- Join the server and verify the companion before allowing normal play to continue.
Why server edits are easy to get wrong
A server may contain more than one representation of a companion: a global dead-state flag, an entity record, health, position, and other state. Changing only one part can leave a character invisible, dead on the next load, or duplicated. The March 9, 2026 procedure specifically warns that duplicate entries can cause corrupted spawns or startup failures. Preserve the original archive so the operator can roll back immediately.

Because hosts package and name files differently, do not assume that a field found in one server build exists in another. If the archive lacks the documented key, stop and obtain a version-matched procedure or editor instead of adding a guessed entry.

Troubleshooting after revival
The companion still does not appear
- Confirm that you edited the active save, not a backup, client copy, or older slot.
- For Admin Panel recovery, verify that
cheatstickwas entered before pressingF1. - For file recovery, check that the JSON filename and location are unchanged and that the file remains valid JSON.
- For servers, confirm the server was stopped during editing and that the edited archive was uploaded to the authoritative location.
There are two Kelvins or two Virginias
Do not run the spawn command again. Duplicate entries can destabilize a world or server. Restore the pre-experiment backup, or use a version-compatible editor that can remove the extra record. Keep the original archive before attempting cleanup.
Virginia returned but acts as if you have just met
This is an expected limitation of the Admin Panel replacement route. The new entity may not inherit the deceased companion’s relationship state. Rebuilding trust in gameplay is different from restoring the exact old record; an older save is the better choice when relationship progress is essential.
The world lost recent progress
That is the normal consequence of restoring an older donor save. Return to the backed-up current folder if you prefer recent construction and exploration, then choose a replacement spawn or a carefully version-matched edit instead.
The edited save will not load
Stop testing the damaged copy. Restore the complete backup, not just one JSON file, because related files may have been changed during a failed save. If the backup also fails, use the game’s other save slot or a server backup rather than inventing new keys.
How to prevent a permanent companion loss
- Keep rotating manual saves before dangerous expeditions and major building sessions.
- Back up the complete save folder after important milestones, especially in multiplayer.
- On a dedicated server, retain dated downloads of the server archive and know how to stop and restore the service.
- When testing commands or editors, work on a copy and verify the result before replacing the live save.
- After a game update, assume that JSON layouts and third-party editor support may have changed until confirmed.
Which option should you use?
Use the Admin Panel when speed and preservation of current building progress matter most, and accept that Virginia may need to rebuild trust. Use an older save when you want the closest return to the original companion state and can accept losing everything after that save. Use a direct edit only when you have a verified backup and the expected fields are present in your version. Use a save editor when it explicitly supports your current format and you are comfortable testing the output. For a dedicated server, always follow the stop, download, edit, upload, and restart sequence on the server’s copy rather than editing a client save.
