To set up SoftEther for gaming, run SoftEther VPN Server on an always-on Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, Solaris, or other supported computer, create a Virtual Hub and player accounts, make the server reachable through TCP 443, 992, or 5555 (plus any required NAT traversal), and configure every player’s SoftEther VPN Client with the server hostname, port, hub name, and credentials. Then test the actual game route for latency, jitter, packet loss, and disconnects.

A VPN is not automatically a ping reducer. It adds a tunnel endpoint and may improve or worsen a route depending on the server’s location, ISP congestion, packet loss, and the capacity of the host and router. SoftEther documents UDP acceleration, but its official materials do not publish a universal gaming-latency improvement.

What a SoftEther gaming server does

SoftEther creates an encrypted virtual network that lets approved clients reach one another through a common server. This is useful when players are separated by carrier-grade NAT, restrictive routers, or networks that do not expose a game host directly. It can also provide a consistent private address space for a group.

The server is ordinary software rather than a dedicated appliance. You can install it on a spare desktop, a small home server, or a virtual private server (VPS). Every player installs a compatible client, connects to the same Virtual Hub, and uses an individual account. The VPN carries the game traffic; it does not change the game’s own matchmaking, server region, or netcode.

Choose where to host the server

Home-hosted server

A home host is convenient when the players are near your house and your internet connection has reliable upload capacity. Use a machine that can remain powered on, preferably connected to the router by Ethernet. The router and host must have enough CPU and throughput to encrypt and forward traffic for the whole group.

Home hosting becomes difficult when the ISP uses CGNAT, inbound connections are blocked, or the upload path is unstable. In those cases, SoftEther’s built-in Dynamic DNS and NAT Traversal can help a private-address server become reachable, but they are not a guarantee that every ISP or firewall will permit inbound traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VPS-hosted server

A VPS avoids most home-router restrictions and usually has a public address and a stable data-center connection. Choose a region close to the players, not merely the cheapest region. A distant VPS can add more delay than the home route you were trying to improve. Verify the provider’s egress limits, monthly transfer allowance, and firewall controls before installing.

Decision Home host VPS host
Best fit Players near the host and a reliable, reachable home connection CGNAT, blocked inbound traffic, unreliable home upload, or geographically distributed players
Reachability work May require port forwarding, Dynamic DNS, or NAT Traversal Usually requires only the VPS firewall and SoftEther listener configuration
Performance risk Router CPU, Wi-Fi, upload congestion, and double NAT Data-center distance, provider congestion, and VPS CPU or transfer limits
Administration You maintain power, updates, and the home network You maintain the operating system, SoftEther, and provider firewall

Prepare the network and accounts

  • Pick an always-on host and record its local address if it is at home.
  • Use a wired connection for the host whenever possible.
  • Decide whether players need only a routed virtual network or direct integration with the home LAN.
  • Create a strong, unique server-administrator password and keep it separate from player credentials.
  • Give each player an individual account so you can revoke one person’s access without changing everyone else’s password.
  • Choose a hostname: SoftEther Dynamic DNS can provide one for a server behind NAT, while a VPS can normally use its public address or a domain name you control.
  • Confirm that your chosen host and router can sustain the expected simultaneous traffic. SoftEther’s project materials describe “1-Gbps-class high-speed throughput performance” as a project capability claim, not as an independent gaming benchmark.

Install SoftEther VPN Server

Native installation

Install SoftEther VPN Server from the official project distribution for the host operating system. The project supports Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD, Solaris, and other platforms listed by SoftEther. Install the matching server-management tools as well, because the first configuration is performed through the server configuration utility.

  1. Install the server package on the always-on host and start the SoftEther VPN Server service.
  2. Open the server configuration tool and connect to the local server instance.
  3. Set the server-administrator password immediately. Do not reuse a player password.
  4. Record the host’s local address or VPS public address for later reachability tests.

Docker deployment

SoftEther also publishes an official Docker image. The Docker documentation requires the container to have the NET_ADMIN capability and to expose the listener ports you intend to use. Pin a specific image version instead of relying on the floating latest tag; a pinned version makes upgrades deliberate and gives you a known rollback point.

Map the selected TCP listener ports from the host to the container according to the image documentation, persist the server’s configuration volume, and apply the same firewall rules you would use for a native installation. Do not discard the configuration volume when recreating the container, or the hub, users, and certificates may be lost.

Create the Virtual Hub and player identities

  1. In the server configuration tool, choose the option to create a new Virtual Hub.
  2. Assign a descriptive hub name that every player can enter exactly, including capitalization where the client requires it.
  3. Set a strong hub-administrator password. This is distinct from the server-administrator password.
  4. Open the hub’s user-management screen and create one account per player.
  5. Use long, unique passwords and remove accounts that should no longer connect.
  6. Keep hub administration restricted to the hub administrator; ordinary player accounts should not receive administrative rights.

Choose SecureNAT or a bridge/routed design

SecureNAT is the simpler starting point. SoftEther provides routed access through its virtual NAT and DHCP functions, so clients can connect without modifying the physical LAN. It is well suited to a small gaming group that needs a private address space and does not need every broadcast or discovery protocol from the home network.

A local bridge or routed LAN design integrates the Virtual Hub more directly with the host’s physical network. It can be appropriate when a game depends on LAN discovery or when clients must reach existing machines on the home subnet. Bridging introduces more administration: address planning, firewall rules, and the possibility of loops or unintended exposure. Use it only when SecureNAT cannot provide the connectivity your game requires.

Select listener ports and make the server reachable

SoftEther’s current specification lists these default TCP listeners:

Listener Typical use Reachability note
TCP 443 Useful when firewalls permit HTTPS-like traffic Forward this port to the SoftEther host if your NAT requires forwarding
TCP 992 Additional default SoftEther listener Forward only if you intend clients to use it
TCP 5555 Typical choice where traffic is unrestricted Often straightforward on networks without filtering

You do not need to expose every listener. Pick one reachable port, configure the client to use that same port, and close unused inbound rules. Port 5555 is suitable when the network does not hinder it; port 443 can be more practical when outbound filtering permits HTTPS-like traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Router forwarding

  1. Give the home server a stable LAN address, either with a static address or a DHCP reservation.
  2. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create a rule for the chosen TCP port and send it to the server’s LAN address.
  3. Allow the same port in the host operating system’s firewall.
  4. Apply the rule and test from a network outside the home LAN, such as a mobile connection. Testing only from inside the LAN can produce a false success through local reflection.

Forward only the listener you use. The UDP ports 500 and 4500 belong to SoftEther’s L2TP/IPsec function; they are not additional ports required for a normal SoftEther VPN protocol connection. Open them only when you deliberately configure L2TP/IPsec.

Dynamic DNS and NAT Traversal

SoftEther’s official NAT-traversal documentation states that “SoftEther VPN Server has the built-in Dynamic DNS and NAT Traversal functions.” A server can therefore retain a private address behind NAT while the built-in function attempts to create a punched hole automatically. Treat this as a reachability aid, not a promise: CGNAT policies, symmetric NAT, restrictive firewalls, or blocked protocols can still prevent inbound sessions.

If NAT Traversal does not work reliably, move the server to a VPS with a public address or obtain a public IPv4 address from the ISP. Avoid stacking multiple routers; double NAT makes forwarding and troubleshooting harder. If double NAT is unavoidable, forward the selected port through every layer or place the inner router in the outer router’s appropriate passthrough or DMZ mode, then restrict the inner firewall carefully.

Configure every player’s client

  1. Install SoftEther VPN Client on each player’s computer.
  2. Open the client connection manager and create a new connection.
  3. Enter the server’s Dynamic DNS hostname or public address.
  4. Enter the listener port you selected, such as TCP 443 or TCP 5555.
  5. Enter the exact Virtual Hub name.
  6. Enter that player’s username and password.
  7. Save the profile, connect, and verify that the client receives a virtual address.

The official manual identifies the hostname or address, listener port, Virtual Hub name, and user credentials as the required connection information. A typo in any one of these fields can look like a firewall failure, so compare the client profile with the server configuration character for character.

After connection, confirm that the client can reach the other players’ virtual addresses. Then launch the game and use its LAN or direct-connect option if applicable. If the game relies on broadcast discovery and SecureNAT does not pass that discovery, test a direct IP connection or evaluate a carefully planned bridge instead.

Tune the route for gaming

Place the endpoint near the players

Measure candidate server locations from the actual players. A nearby home host can beat a distant VPS, while a nearby VPS can beat a congested or CGNAT-affected home route. Select the location with the lowest stable in-game latency and jitter, not the location with the lowest one-time ping.

Use UDP acceleration when available

SoftEther documents UDP acceleration that can use a direct UDP channel or UDP hole punching when conditions permit. It can reduce the overhead of carrying interactive traffic over a TCP tunnel. Availability depends on the NAT and firewall path; the client and server may fall back when a direct UDP channel cannot be established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect the bottlenecks

  • Keep the server wired and avoid sharing its uplink with large uploads or cloud backups during play.
  • Check the host and router CPU when several players connect. SoftEther warns that insufficient hardware performance can cause a significant VPN speed reduction.
  • Prefer a router or firewall with enough processing capacity for encryption and the target throughput.
  • Avoid Wi-Fi between the host and router. If players use Wi-Fi locally, test for radio interference separately from the VPN route.
  • Keep the SoftEther version, operating system, and router firmware maintained, but schedule upgrades outside tournaments and retain a rollback plan.

Measure the game path, not just the tunnel

Record each player’s in-game latency, jitter, packet loss, and disconnect rate before and after enabling the VPN. Repeat tests at the times you normally play, because evening congestion can change the result. A lower ICMP ping to the VPN host does not prove a lower ping to the game server. Keep the VPN only when it produces a more stable route for the specific game and players.

Home host versus VPS, SecureNAT versus bridge, and port choices

Choice Advantages Trade-offs Use when
Home host No separate server subscription; direct control of the local network Power, upload, CGNAT, NAT, and router-performance responsibilities Most players are near the home and inbound reachability is reliable
VPS host Public address, stable data-center connectivity, easier remote access Recurring cost, geographic distance, provider limits, and operating-system maintenance Home ISP blocks inbound traffic or players are spread across regions
SecureNAT Fastest setup and isolated routed network May not pass every LAN-discovery or broadcast-dependent game behavior Players need private routed access without full LAN integration
Bridge or routed LAN Closer integration with existing LAN services and discovery More complex addressing and greater exposure if misconfigured A specific game requires LAN behavior that SecureNAT cannot provide
TCP 443 Often passes networks that allow HTTPS-like traffic Can conflict with another service already using 443 Players connect from restrictive networks
TCP 5555 Conventional choice on unrestricted networks May be filtered by a network policy You control both ends of a permissive network path

Troubleshoot by symptom

The client cannot find or reach the server

  • Check that the hostname resolves to the current public address.
  • Confirm the client port matches the listener you enabled.
  • Verify the router forwards that TCP port to the correct host address.
  • Check the host firewall and any VPS security-group rule.
  • Test from outside the home network. If outside testing fails but local testing works, suspect NAT reflection or an incomplete forward.
  • If forwarding is correct but the ISP uses CGNAT, enable SoftEther NAT Traversal or move the server to a public VPS.

The client connects but cannot reach other players

  • Confirm every player is connected to the same Virtual Hub, not merely the same server.
  • Check that each account is enabled and has the intended hub permissions.
  • Inspect virtual addresses and local firewalls for overlapping subnets.
  • If discovery fails under SecureNAT, try the game’s direct-connect address or redesign the network with a bridge or explicit routing.

Ping is high or matches disconnect

  • Compare the route with and without the VPN at the same time of day.
  • Move the server closer to the players if the path is geographically long.
  • Check packet loss and jitter, not only average latency.
  • Look for saturated home upload, weak Wi-Fi, double NAT, or a router whose CPU is maxed during play.
  • Test UDP acceleration where the firewall path allows it.
  • If the VPN consistently worsens the route, remove it for that game; SoftEther has no universal latency benefit.

Throughput collapses with several players

Check host and router CPU, available upload, VPS transfer limits, and the number of simultaneous encrypted sessions. SoftEther’s documentation specifically warns that inadequate hardware performance can significantly reduce VPN speed. Reduce competing traffic, upgrade the host or router, or choose a higher-capacity VPS before changing game settings.

Secure and maintain the server

  • Use unique administrator and player passwords; never distribute the hub-administrator credential to the whole group.
  • Disable or delete accounts when a player no longer needs access.
  • Expose only the selected listener port and keep management interfaces off the public internet unless access is required.
  • Back up the SoftEther configuration before upgrades or Docker container replacement.
  • Pin Docker image versions and upgrade intentionally rather than pulling an untested latest image.
  • Log connection times and investigate unexpected accounts or repeated failures.
  • Re-test reachability after changing the router, ISP, hostname, port, or server location.

Does SoftEther lower gaming ping?

Sometimes a VPN produces a better route when the normal ISP path is congested or poorly peered, but the opposite is equally possible. The VPN adds encryption and an additional endpoint, so distance, congestion, packet loss, NAT behavior, and hardware capacity determine the result. The responsible way to decide is to compare the actual game route over repeated sessions and keep the configuration that delivers the lower, steadier latency with fewer losses and disconnects.
