To revoke a crypto wallet approval, use a trusted approval checker or wallet interface on the same network where you granted it, select the token permission you want to cancel, and confirm the revocation transaction in your wallet. It costs network gas. Disconnecting from a dapp is separate: it ends the wallet connection but does not cancel an on-chain token allowance.
What a wallet approval allows—and what disconnecting does
A token approval is an on-chain smart-contract permission that lets a spender access or move a specified token from your self-custody wallet. DeFi apps often request approvals to carry out an action, and the permission may remain after that interaction is finished. MetaMask explains token approvals and revocation.

A wallet connection is different. Disconnecting changes the connection between your wallet and a dapp; it does not remove an allowance already recorded on-chain. ethereum.org puts it plainly: “No, if you disconnect your wallet from the project, but you’ve granted token allowance permissions, they can still use those tokens.” See its guide to revoking smart-contract access.

How to find and revoke an approval
- Identify the network. Check the chain on which you approved the spender. Allowances on one network do not automatically apply on another, so the checker must support the relevant chain. MetaMask says its Portfolio allowance feature is available on Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain; support and interfaces can change. Its revocation guide lists options.
- Open a checker directly. MetaMask points to block-explorer checkers such as Etherscan, BscScan, and Polygonscan, as well as Revoke.cash and MetaMask Portfolio. Etherscan describes its Token Approval Checker as a way to review and revoke allowances. Check current network support and make sure you are on the intended service before connecting a wallet.
- Review the permission. Check the token, spender, network, and allowed amount shown. Start with permissions you do not recognize or no longer need, but do not treat a familiar-looking spender name as proof that a contract is safe. MetaMask recommends reviewing allowances regularly and frames revocation as a balance between risk and convenience.
- Choose revoke and inspect the wallet prompt. Confirm that the transaction is for the intended network and permission before signing. Revoke.cash says revoking an ERC-20 approval sets its allowance to zero; revoking an NFT approval sets it to false. Its approval explainer describes these changes.
- Wait for confirmation. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, not merely a setting change. Etherscan notes that connecting a wallet to its site does not automatically sign a transaction; the revocation itself still requires explicit wallet confirmation. A transaction also needs gas, with the fee depending on network conditions.
What revocation changes—and what it does not
Revoking an allowance stops that spender from using the canceled token permission going forward, but it does not undo a transfer that has already happened. It also does not remove tokens you have deposited or staked in a protocol. Revoke.cash notes that adding more to a protocol may require a new approval; see its FAQ.

If you use the protocol again, it may ask you to approve the token again. That is a new permission to consider, not a reason to assume the old one was needed indefinitely. If you suspect someone has access to your recovery phrase or device, revoking approvals alone is not a complete response to a compromised wallet.
Why an approval checker may not show every permission
Traditional token allowances are not the only way apps can receive permission. Permit signatures and Permit2 are alternative permission mechanisms. Coverage depends on the checker, network, and permission type; do not assume one approval list shows every authorization associated with a wallet. A practical review routine
- Review approvals after using a dapp you do not expect to revisit, and periodically check permissions you still have open.
- Match the checker to the network where the approval was granted.
- Examine the token and spender before revoking; revoke permissions you do not recognize or no longer need.
- Read each wallet transaction prompt and confirm its network and purpose before signing.
- Expect gas for a revocation and a possible new approval if you later use the protocol again.
