Its depot commands are historical, so do not use them as a recipe for downgrading today’s version. First identify the exact game version your mods require; a current, verified rollback procedure and depot manifest IDs are not established here.
Why the old rollback guide is not a current recipe
The Reddit post frames a familiar problem: a Fallout 4 update can leave a mod setup incompatible with the game. The practical issue is version matching. The game executable and related data files need to match the version expected by the mods; changing only some files can leave the installation inconsistent.

The detailed Steam Community rollback guide describes downloading depots through Steam’s console and replacing files in the Fallout 4 installation. Its stated target is version 1.10.163.0.1, the pre-next-gen build. Bethesda’s August 18, 2026 patch notes document a later update, so the guide’s old depot IDs should not be treated as instructions for the current build. Bethesda’s notes do not provide Steam depot manifests or endorse downgrading; current manifest IDs and a verified current rollback process are not established.
The later update is a concrete reminder that the game’s files have changed: Bethesda says it raised the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024. That change does not itself tell you which version a particular mod needs, but it makes assuming that an older guide applies especially unwise.

What to check before changing game files
- Confirm the required game version. Check each mod’s stated requirements and dependencies. Do not assume that “latest” or “pre-next-gen” describes the version your full setup needs.
- Identify your storefront. Bethesda’s April 2024 announcement covers PC updates for Steam, Microsoft Store, and GOG, but the detailed rollback method cited here is Steam-specific. Do not apply Steam console instructions to another storefront.
- Match the installation details. The historical guide says depot selection depends on the installed language and DLC. A mismatch can leave you with files that do not correspond to your installation.
- Back up first. Copy the existing game folder and protect your saves and mod configuration before replacing files. The Reddit thread and guide include reports of both successful setups and failures.
- Decide whether you need Creations content. The historical guide warns that Creation Club add-ons may not work after rollback because the relevant historical versions may not be retrievable through the described depots.
What the historical Steam method involves
For context, the old guide’s process is to use the Steam console to download selected game, language, and DLC depots, stage the downloaded files, and copy them over the installation. It then recommends changing Steam’s update behavior and marking appmanifest_377160.acf read-only to reduce the chance that Steam replaces the chosen files.
Those are community instructions for its stated 1.10.163.0.1 target, not a verified procedure for Bethesda’s August 2026 build. Do not copy its commands or substitute guessed depot IDs. If you are pursuing a historical target, verify that the files and manifests match your exact target version and installation before proceeding.

Holding the game back also has a maintenance cost: Steam will not update that installation normally while you are trying to preserve the selected files. You will need to manage updates deliberately and reassess compatibility before moving the game or mods forward.
Other PC storefronts and third-party tools
Bethesda’s April 2024 announcement names Steam, Microsoft Store, and GOG as PC editions, but the detailed depot instructions above are for Steam. The sources here do not establish a corresponding current rollback procedure for Microsoft Store or GOG.

A community Fallout 4 Downgrader GitHub project describes a console application that reverts the game to a pre-next-gen version and says users must enter Steam credentials. Its repository also offers framework-dependent and self-contained versions. That description establishes that a third-party utility exists; it does not establish that the tool is safe, independently audited, or compatible with the August 2026 build. Treat credential access as a significant consideration, and do not assume the utility solves a current rollback.

Before the August 2026 patch, Bethesda Game Studios advised players to save their game or load order; PC Gamer quoted Bethesda saying, “As a precaution, prior to these updates we encourage players to log into your game save if you haven’t done so in a while or manually save your load order.” Bethesda also said players would be able to re-download their Creations list after the update. This is advice about preserving a Creations load order before an update, not a method for downgrading the game.
