Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can loop prepared lessons into a continuous YouTube Live broadcast with FFmpeg: make sure your channel is eligible, copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and settings suited to your lesson files and connection. The loop keeps the media playing; it does not restart a crashed encoder or guarantee uninterrupted service, so plan supervision, monitoring, and replay storage separately.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A prepared lesson video with the audio and video streams you intend to broadcast.
- A computer that can read the file and, if needed, encode it at the selected resolution and frame rate. The official guidance does not set a universal minimum hardware specification.
- A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen video and audio bitrate, plus enough headroom for normal network variation.
- FFmpeg installed and available in a terminal.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and get its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the stream using YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- In the stream settings, reveal and copy the current RTMPS URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL; follow its RTMPS instructions.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who has it may be able to send video to the associated stream. Do not paste it into a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post.
- Start the encoder early enough to inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before relying on the broadcast.
Use the server address currently shown for your stream rather than copying an ingest hostname from an old tutorial. The URL and key together identify where FFmpeg sends the broadcast.
Choose resolution, bitrate, codecs, and keyframes
YouTube’s published RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Use the currently published encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as a starting point, then validate the actual stream in Live Control Room.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Keyframe interval example |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 60 frames for two seconds at 30 fps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 60 frames for two seconds at 30 fps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular source, encoder, or connection will work well at those settings. Pick a resolution and rate your lesson source and sustained upload can support. For lessons, test representative speech, music, captions, and visual motion: a silent still image or quiet test may conceal audio or transition problems. If frame rate changes, recalculate the GOP/keyframe count: two seconds is 60 frames at 30 fps, but 120 frames at 60 fps.

Run a lesson file in a continuous FFmpeg loop
For a prepared MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, this illustrative command transcodes video to H.264, encodes AAC audio, reads the file in real time, and loops it indefinitely:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i lesson.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmps://<current-server>/<stream-key>"
-stream_loop -1 is an input option: put it before the -i it applies to. FFmpeg documents -1 as infinite looping. -re reads a file at its native frame rate and is useful when simulating a live feed from a file; it should not be applied indiscriminately to already-live inputs. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

Replace the illustrative destination with the RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room. The command’s 2.5 Mbps video rate is only an example, not a YouTube recommendation for 720p or 1080p. Set bitrate, frame rate, resolution, and -g to match the desired output and encoder capacity. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a two-second GOP; use a different frame count if your output frame rate differs. Check that lesson.mp4 actually contains the expected audio and video streams before starting.
Use stream copy only when the source fits
If the file is already encoded suitably, copying its streams can reduce encoding load. It is only appropriate when the codecs, timestamps, keyframe cadence, and container/ingest compatibility suit the target. Otherwise, transcode as in the example. A file’s extension alone does not establish that it is compatible; inspect it and test the resulting stream.

Check the loop boundary
A file can loop technically while still producing a distracting jump, repeated opening, clipped sentence, or brief audio discontinuity at the boundary. Review the transition between the end and beginning of the lesson. For a sequence of lessons, prepare and test the intended playlist or joined program rather than assuming each file will transition cleanly.
Keep FFmpeg recoverable and watch the broadcast
The loop prevents the input file from ending; it does not restart FFmpeg if the process exits, the computer reboots, or the network fails. Run FFmpeg under an operating-system service manager or another process supervisor, protect the stream key using a secret store or restricted environment, and monitor both the encoder process and YouTube’s preview and health messages.

FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes a FIFO muxer example that attempts recovery after a temporary network failure with a one-second recovery wait. Such recovery is best-effort: it does not ensure the process survives every failure, that YouTube preserves the event, or that viewers see uninterrupted playback. Set alerts and define a deliberate restart procedure, then test failure handling before depending on it. A separately prepared backup encoder can be useful, but do not assume failover works until you have tested it against your stream setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for archives and lesson replays
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration condition, and the guidance does not promise one complete replay file for an indefinite stream. If learners need replays, lesson-by-lesson access, or chapters, keep a separate recording and archive workflow and verify YouTube’s current behavior before launch.

Protect the channel and lesson content
- Only broadcast lesson material and music you have permission to use. A continuous format does not exempt a stream from copyright rules or YouTube’s policies.
- Review your stream’s title, description, audience setting, and any scheduled-event details before going live. Make clear that the broadcast loops recorded lessons rather than implying it is a live class if it is not.
- Check audio levels, captions, and any embedded text at the actual broadcast resolution. Ensure learners can understand the lesson when it repeats and that any on-screen information remains current.
- Keep the stream key confidential and rotate it through YouTube’s controls if it is exposed.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Wrong or outdated RTMPS URL/key, encoder not started, or network blockage | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify FFmpeg’s output messages, and confirm the machine can reach the network. |
| Stream health warns about bitrate or connection | Chosen bitrate exceeds sustained upload capacity or the connection varies | Lower output resolution or bitrate, leave network headroom, and monitor health during a representative test. |
| Video stutters or FFmpeg cannot encode smoothly | Encoding workload exceeds available compute, or input/output settings are mismatched | Try a lower resolution or frame rate, a faster x264 preset, or compatible stream copy after confirming the source meets ingest requirements. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Input has no expected audio stream, audio codec/settings mismatch, or file timestamps issue | Inspect the input streams, explicitly encode to AAC when appropriate, and test a representative section in the YouTube preview. |
| Lesson repeats with a jump or silence | End and beginning of the source do not join cleanly | Edit the boundary or assemble the lessons into a tested program with intentional transitions. |
| Broadcast stops after an interruption | FFmpeg exited, host rebooted, or network recovery was unsuccessful | Check supervisor and FFmpeg logs, restart the process deliberately, and validate any recovery or backup procedure in advance. |
| No single full replay appears | The stream exceeded the under-12-hour archive guidance | Use a separate recording/archive workflow and verify current platform behavior for your event. |
