What the Docker server provides
A Dockerized Left 4 Dead 2 dedicated server packages the game-server process and its SteamCMD-managed files into a container. The container can download or update the dedicated-server package, start the Source dedicated-server process, expose the game and RCON port, and load configuration and add-ons from mounted storage.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The image’s normal entry point starts a vanilla server without requiring you to build a custom image. Docker controls the container lifecycle; the image’s srcds_run watchdog controls the game-process lifecycle. Those are separate protections: the watchdog can restart the server process after a crash, while Docker’s restart policy can bring the container back after a host reboot or an unexpected container exit.
Choose host or bridge networking before you start
The networking mode determines how players reach the server and whether the game can see their original addresses.

| Mode | Command pattern | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Host networking | --network host |
The container uses the host’s network stack. The Left4DevOps documentation prefers this because the game can identify connecting player IPs correctly, which supports bans and RCON protection. |
| Bridge networking | -p host:container/tcp and -p host:container/udp |
You explicitly publish the game port. TCP and UDP must use the same number on both sides, or matchmaking can advertise a port that new players cannot use. |
On Windows and macOS, host networking requires Docker Desktop host-networking support to be enabled. If that support is unavailable, use bridge mode and publish the required ports.
Start a vanilla server with the Left4DevOps image
Host-networked launch
On a Linux Docker host, the minimal launch command is:
docker run --name l4d2 --network host left4devops/l4d2
The container is named l4d2, uses the host network, and starts the image’s default server process. Because no persistent volume is specified, treat this as a quick test or disposable instance; use the persistence steps below for a server you intend to keep.
Bridge-networked launch
When host networking is not appropriate, publish the default example port, 27015, on both protocols:
docker run --name l4d2-bridged
-p 27015:27015/tcp
-p 27015:27015/udp
left4devops/l4d2
The first number in each mapping is the host port and the second is the container port. Keep them identical for this image unless you have deliberately changed the container’s PORT value and are mapping that new value. Publishing only TCP or only UDP is incomplete for this setup.
“When publishing your ports with bridge networking, ensure the same port is used for both client and host. Otherwise matchmaking will advertise the wrong port and new players will not be able to connect.”

Install the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
The dedicated-server package is Steam App ID 222860. The documented SteamCMD image command downloads it into a mounted steamapps directory:

docker run -it -v "$(pwd)/steamapps:/steamapps"
--name steamcmd left4devops/steamcmd
+login gaben +app_update 222860 +quit
The bind mount keeps the downloaded Steam files outside the temporary container layer. The command uses the documented gaben login argument and exits after +app_update 222860 +quit completes. If you are using the production left4devops/l4d2 image instead, its documented behavior can update the server automatically as part of startup.
An alternative implementation documents validation with:
steamcmd +app_update 222860 validate
Validation checks the installed files before the server starts. The alternative image exposes this as an optional non-empty VALIDATE environment variable. Use validation when files may be incomplete or damaged; do not confuse it with a backup, because it verifies installation files rather than preserving your configuration or add-ons.
Persist the server and add-ons
Container layers are disposable. Recreating a container without a volume or bind mount can force the server files to download again and can remove changes that were stored only inside the old container.
Mount the server directory
The phistrom implementation documents a host-directory mount such as:
-v /srv/l4d2:/l4d2
Here, /srv/l4d2 is the host directory and /l4d2 is the path inside the container. The documented warning is important: omitting this mount causes the files to be downloaded again when the container is recreated. Choose a host directory that is included in your normal backup plan and that the Docker daemon can read and write.
With the Left4DevOps image, use the same persistence principle by attaching a named volume or a bind mount to the path expected by that image. Keep the mount declaration on every replacement command; a volume only helps if the replacement container attaches the same volume.

Mount custom content separately
The Left4DevOps documentation supports mounting add-ons into /addons/. A relative host directory example is:
-v ./addons:/addons/
Place the add-on files in the host-side addons directory, then recreate or restart the container with that mount present. Separating add-ons from the image makes them easier to back up, replace, and audit when troubleshooting a mod-related problem.
Configure identity, region, groups, and ports
Set environment variables on the container command line or through the deployment method you use. The documented variables are:
| Variable | Purpose | What to decide |
|---|---|---|
HOSTNAME |
Server-browser name | Use a name your players can recognize and distinguish from other servers. |
MOTD |
Message-of-the-day setting | Choose whether the server displays an MOTD. |
HOST_CONTENT |
Host-content setting | Set it according to the image’s documented content behavior. |
MOTD_CONTENT |
MOTD text/content | Provide the message players should see when they join. |
REGION |
Numeric region hint | Select the code matching the intended player region, or leave the documented default of 255 for World. |
STEAM_GROUP |
Associates the server with a Steam Group | Supply the group identifier when you want the server listed through that group. |
STEAM_GROUP_EXCLUSIVE |
Restricts ordinary lobby selection to group members | Set true only when group-only matchmaking is intended. |
PORT |
Game and RCON port | Set it explicitly when you need a predictable port, then use that same value in bridge mappings. |
Region codes
The documented numeric hints are:
0— East Coast USA1— West Coast USA2— South America3— Europe4— Asia5— Australia6— Middle East7— Africa255— World, the documented default
REGION is a hint, not a replacement for a reachable network path. Players still need a route to the server’s address and port.
Make the port choice consistent
The image normally selects the next free port after 27015 unless PORT is set explicitly. An explicit value is safer when you are publishing bridge ports, forwarding a port through a router, or telling friends a fixed address. If you set PORT=27020, publish 27020:27020/tcp and 27020:27020/udp, not mappings that still reference 27015.
STEAM_GROUP_EXCLUSIVE=true limits ordinary lobby selection to group members, but the documentation says non-members can still use mm_dedicated_force_servers. Do not describe exclusivity to players as an absolute access control unless you also control the connection method.
Expose the server correctly
Host mode
Host mode avoids Docker’s bridge translation and is the preferred mode in the Left4DevOps documentation when available. The game can identify connecting player IPs correctly, which matters for bans and for protecting RCON access. You still need the host’s network and firewall configuration to allow the chosen game port; host mode does not make an otherwise unreachable machine public.

Bridge mode
Bridge mode requires two published mappings for the selected port:
-p 27015:27015/tcp
-p 27015:27015/udp
Use the same host and container number in both mappings. If you select a different PORT, replace every occurrence with that number. A mismatch can make the server appear in matchmaking with the wrong port, so players see a server but cannot complete the connection.
Windows and macOS considerations
Docker Desktop users should verify that host-networking support is enabled before using --network host. If it is not enabled, the documented fallback is bridge networking with both protocol mappings. The connection instructions you give players should use the externally reachable address for the Docker host, not an address that exists only inside Docker’s private network.
How friends connect
The image documentation lists several supported paths. Which one is most convenient depends on whether the server is public, associated with a Steam Group, or intended for a specific group of friends.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Best Available Dedicated. - Developer console force. Enable the game’s developer console and enter
mm_dedicated_force_servers [ip:port], replacing the bracketed placeholder with the server’s reachable address and selected port. - Steam Group server. Associate the server with a Steam Group through
STEAM_GROUP, then select the group server route. IfSTEAM_GROUP_EXCLUSIVE=true, ordinary lobby selection is limited to group members. - Server browser. Use
openserverbrowserto open the browser and locate the server. - Steam Game Servers view. Open Steam’s Game Servers view and search for or select the dedicated server there.
- Direct console connection. Enter

The documentation also states that LAN servers are shown automatically as Steam Group servers. For friends outside the host’s local network, provide the public address and port that correspond to the published or host-networked service.

Watch runtime output
Follow the container’s output with:
docker logs -f l4d2
Use the actual container name if you launched it as l4d2-bridged or another name. Logs are the first place to check whether SteamCMD completed, which port the image selected, whether the server process started, and whether a crash triggered a restart.
Restart after crashes and reboots
The bundled srcds_run watchdog restarts the server process after a crash. Add Docker’s restart policy when the container should return after a host reboot:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
--restart unless-stopped
Include that option in the original docker run command. The policy does not replace persistence: it restarts the same container, while a manually recreated container still needs the server and add-on mounts attached.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most
The server is listed, but nobody can join
- In bridge mode, verify that both TCP and UDP are published and that host and container ports match.
- If
PORTis set, verify that the same number appears in both mappings and in the address given to players. - Check whether matchmaking is advertising a stale or automatically selected port. Set
PORTexplicitly for a stable address. - Confirm that players are using the host’s reachable address, not a container-only address.
Players connect, but bans or RCON protections behave incorrectly
The Left4DevOps documentation prefers host networking because the game can identify connecting player IPs correctly. If this behavior matters, enable Docker Desktop host networking where supported or run the server on a platform that supports host mode. Bridge mode can still function, but address visibility is the reason the documentation does not make it the preferred default.
The server downloads everything again
The container was recreated without the server-directory mount, or the replacement container did not attach the same volume. Recreate it with the persistent mount, such as the documented /srv/l4d2:/l4d2 pattern for the alternative implementation, and keep the add-on mount in the command as well.
Files are incomplete or the update did not finish
Run the documented SteamCMD validation form, steamcmd +app_update 222860 validate, or enable the alternative image’s non-empty VALIDATE setting. Then inspect docker logs -f for the startup result before asking players to reconnect.
The server appears in the wrong regional pool
Check REGION and use the documented numeric code for the intended area. Remember that 255 means World and is the default; selecting a regional hint does not repair a port or routing problem.
Left4DevOps and the alternative image
The documented implementations differ in the areas that affect operations. The available evidence supports the following comparison:
| Operational area | left4devops/l4d2 |
Alternative implementation described in the documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Networking default | Host networking is the preferred route when available; bridge mode is supported. | Not stated in the available documentation. |
| Port configuration | PORT controls game and RCON port; the image normally chooses the next free port after 27015. |
Not stated. |
| Automatic updates | The production image can update the server automatically. | SteamCMD update and validation are documented. |
| Persistence example | Add-ons can be mounted at /addons/; use a persistent server mount. |
-v /srv/l4d2:/l4d2 is documented, with a warning about redownloading after recreation. |
| Validation | Not stated as an optional environment variable. | A non-empty VALIDATE variable can run SteamCMD validation before startup. |
| Configuration variables | HOSTNAME, MOTD-related variables, REGION, Steam Group variables, and PORT are documented. |
Not stated. |
| Maintenance activity | Not stated. | Not stated. |
| Logging | Use Docker logs, for example docker logs -f l4d2. |
Use Docker logs for the chosen container; no separate logging system is stated. |
Choose the Left4DevOps image when its documented host-network preference, configuration variables, automatic update behavior, and add-on path fit your deployment. Choose the alternative implementation when its documented validation switch or /srv/l4d2 layout better matches your maintenance process. Maintenance frequency and comparative performance are not established by the documented material, so they should not be inferred from the image names alone.
Pre-launch checklist
- Docker is installed on the host and the host can keep the container running.
- You selected host networking or bridge networking based on platform support.
- For bridge mode, the selected port is published on both TCP and UDP with matching numbers.
- Steam App ID
222860is installed or available for the image’s update process. - The server directory is mounted to persistent host storage.
- The host-side add-on directory is mounted at
/addons/when custom content is needed. HOSTNAME, MOTD settings,REGION, Steam Group settings, andPORTare intentional.- The port in the player instructions matches the value used by the container and Docker mapping.
--restart unless-stoppedis present if the server must return after a reboot.- You can read startup and crash information with
docker logs -f.
Once those checks pass, give players the public or LAN address appropriate to their location, followed by the configured port, or direct them through the Steam Group and lobby methods supported by the image.
