How to Add and Use Life Dogs on an Arma 3 Altis Life Server

Adding dogs to Altis Life is a mission-integration project, not a single switch. Follow the server layout, merge a compatible dog sample safely, enforce ownership and permissions, and test multiplayer persistence before release.

There is no built-in “Life Dogs” switch in Altis Life. Adding a dog is a mission-integration job: install a compatible dog script, merge its creation and interaction code into your unpacked Altis Life mission, then make ownership, locality, permissions and persistence work on the dedicated server. The documented setup also requires an Arma 3 dedicated server, an Altis Life mission PBO, the server-side life_server.pbo, a MySQL- or MariaDB-compatible database and, for the documented Altis Life RPG 5.0 path, extDB3.

This guide lays out a version-conscious installation path, explains what the historical Dog Friends and JBOY Dog projects actually provide, and gives a test plan for spawning, using and maintaining a dog in multiplayer.

What “Life Dogs” means in Altis Life

“Life Dogs” is a common name for adding a companion or K9 feature to an Altis Life mission. It is not a standard framework module with one checkbox, class or universal installer. Your server has to combine three pieces:

  • The Altis Life framework and its mission files.
  • A dog script that creates and controls the animal.
  • Your own economy, ownership, role, interaction and persistence code.

The historical Dog Friends discussion presents dogs as possible police K9 units or civilian companions. It also describes mine detection, icons near explosives and a configurable idea of sniffing for other targets such as drugs. Those are project-thread capabilities, not proof that every release contains them or that they are already integrated into Altis Life. The JBOY Dog material instead emphasizes a sample mission and init.sqf that can be used as a starting point. In both cases, inspect the exact files you obtain and adapt them to the exact Altis Life and Arma 3 revisions on your server.

Requirements and version decisions

Lock the framework, Arma build and dog-script revision before editing anything. The available setup material is historical: the Altis Life setup wiki records a 2019 modification date, while the dog discussions date from 2014–2018. Class names, initialization functions, remote-execution rules and database APIs may therefore differ from current releases.

Component What you need Important qualification
Dedicated server A working Arma 3 server installation The setup notes use SteamCMD command app_update 233780 validate; verify the current server branch and build before production.
Altis Life mission Altis_Life.Altis.pbo in MPMissions You must unpack it to merge dog code, then repack it without changing required mission structure.
Server framework life_server.pbo Place it under @life_server/Addons and load that server mod at startup.
Database MySQL or MariaDB, with the framework’s SQL schema The older instructions mention MySQL 5.6.5 or newer. Treat that as historical guidance and check the revision you actually run.
Database extension extDB3 for the documented Altis Life RPG 5.0.0 setup Do not assume another framework revision uses the same extension or configuration.
Dog implementation Dog Friends-style files, JBOY Dog sample files, or another compatible script There is no maintained, canonical package or universal installation procedure established by the available material.

Build the Altis Life server baseline first

Do not begin by inserting dog code into a server that has not completed its normal Altis Life startup. A dog that works in the editor can still fail when the mission is loaded by a dedicated server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Install or verify the Arma 3 server

  1. Install the dedicated-server files with your chosen SteamCMD workflow. The historical setup command is app_update 233780 validate.
  2. Start the server with the same Arma build and branch that you will use for testing. Record the build number so future framework or dog-script changes can be compared against it.
  3. Confirm that a plain mission appears in the server browser and that a client can join before adding Altis Life.

2. Install the framework files

The documented layout is:

Arma 3 Server/
├── @life_server/
│ └── Addons/
│ └── life_server.pbo
├── @extDB3/
└── MPMissions/
    └── Altis_Life.Altis.pbo

Use the packaged life_server and Altis_Life.Altis PBOs supplied by the framework revision you selected. Put the database SQL into the database engine, create the framework database and set credentials in the framework’s configuration. The older wiki describes a SQL file that creates the AltisLife database; confirm its schema and version requirements rather than importing it blindly into a different release.

3. Apply the mission-file rule for Altis Life 5.0.0 and later

The setup wiki describes separate SQM files for Altis and Tanoa. For the Altis mission, copy the Altis SQM into the Altis_Life.Altis mission directory and rename it mission.sqm. If you are using another framework revision, follow that revision’s directory and mission-name rules instead of forcing this layout.

4. Set the server startup parameters

The bydolg framework notes use:

-servermod=@life_server;@extDB3

Make sure the folders named in the parameter exist at the server root and contain the expected binaries and PBOs. A dog script that is purely mission-side should not be placed in servermod unless its documentation explicitly requires it; normally its files live inside the unpacked mission.

5. Establish a clean backup point

  • Copy the original mission PBO before unpacking it.
  • Back up the database before adding dog ownership fields or tables.
  • Keep a text record of the Arma build, Altis Life commit or package version, extDB3 version and dog-script revision.
  • Test the unmodified Altis Life mission once. This gives you a known-good comparison when a dog merge fails.

Choose a dog implementation

Choose based on the code you can inspect and maintain, not on the project name alone. The two historical approaches have different starting points.

Decision axis Dog Friends-style approach JBOY Dog-style approach
Starting point A forum-described companion or K9 concept with detection ideas. A sample mission and init.sqf intended as a reusable example.
Detection Mine indicators and a configurable “sniff” target are explicitly discussed. Discussion includes mine-detection, patrol and voice-related behavior; verify which functions are in the files you have.
Combat The author describes attack animation as difficult and not finished; collision damage is not a polished bite system. Any attack behavior must be taken from the sample and tested against your mission; current compatibility is not guaranteed.
Maintenance risk The cited discussion is from 2014; expect substantial compatibility work. The cited discussion spans 2016–2018; forum availability and present support are uncertain.

Before merging either one, read its README, init.sqf, function files and required addon list. Identify every class name, global variable, event handler and remote-execution call. A script written for an editor mission may assume that the player is local, that an object is created on the server, or that a particular addon is loaded. Those assumptions must be made explicit in Altis Life.

Merge the dog code into the Altis Life mission

Work on an unpacked copy of Altis_Life.Altis.pbo. Preserve the framework’s existing initialization order and namespace conventions; do not replace its init.sqf wholesale with the sample mission’s file.

  1. Inventory the sample. Locate dog creation, configuration, actions, event handlers, functions and any included files. Note whether the sample expects code in init.sqf, description.ext, CfgFunctions, a mission folder or an addon.
  2. Copy only required assets. Place the dog script files and mission resources inside the Altis Life mission. Add required function declarations and class definitions to the existing configuration rather than creating conflicting duplicate sections.
  3. Insert initialization at the correct point. Call the dog initialization after the framework has established the player and server variables it needs, but before player actions that depend on the dog are evaluated. If the sample creates an object immediately, guard it so a client does not create a second copy.
  4. Choose an authoritative creator. Create a persistent or purchasable dog on the server, or on the machine that the script explicitly requires, then broadcast the object and its state. A local client-only dog will often be invisible or uncontrollable to other players.
  5. Attach interactions deliberately. Add actions such as follow, stay, sit, enter or leave a vehicle, release, replace after death and detection only where the dog and player are local. Conditions should check distance, alive state, ownership and role.
  6. Repack and load the mission. Repack the edited directory as Altis_Life.Altis.pbo, replace the test copy in MPMissions and read the server and client logs on first launch.

The JBOY sample mission is useful because it shows a complete context for a dog, but copying its entire init.sqf can overwrite Altis Life startup code. The safe approach is to port the dog-specific calls into the framework’s existing flow and rename variables that could collide with framework globals.

Design the player interaction and gameplay rules

Companion versus K9 role

Decide whether every player can own a dog, whether a dog is a purchased item, or whether it is restricted to a police/K9 faction. Enforce that decision in server-validated code. A client-side condition that merely hides an action is not an authorization check.

Ownership and lifecycle

Define one owner identifier and one dog record. At minimum, record the owner, dog object identifier, alive or dead state and any purchase or replacement timestamp required by your economy. When the dog dies, offer an explicit replacement or release path; do not let a reconnecting client create another object because it cannot see the old one.

Detection actions

The Dog Friends discussion describes selecting an action and having the dog sit and bark near explosives, with icons created within a configurable distance. It also says the same idea could be adapted to drugs or other targets. Treat the detection radius, target class and marker visibility as configuration choices. Decide whether results are visible only to the owner, to a faction or to all players, and broadcast only the intended information.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Attack behavior

Do not advertise a finished bite mechanic unless you implement and test one. The cited author says attacking is difficult to make look good and questions whether a suitable animation exists; dogs can cause damage when a player runs into them, but that is not equivalent to a controlled attack. If you add combat, specify target selection, friendly-fire rules, damage authority, cooldowns, animation fallback and what happens when the dog is inside a vehicle or unconscious.

Multiplayer locality, permissions and persistence

Locality checks

In Arma 3, an object and its actions are evaluated on specific machines. Confirm where the dog is created, where its movement commands run and where interaction actions are attached. If an action is added only on the owner’s client, nearby players will not see it. If an action is added only on the server, a client may not be able to execute it without the script’s remote-execution path.

  • Log the dog’s owner and locality when it is created.
  • Use the script’s supported remote-execution mechanism and whitelist only the functions that need it.
  • Check that action conditions evaluate correctly for a fresh join, a reconnect and a player who is not the owner.
  • Prevent a client from sending an arbitrary target, price or faction value to a server purchase function.

Persistence

If the dog is free and temporary, document that it disappears on restart. If it is purchased or part of a police role, store ownership and lifecycle state in the framework’s persistence layer. A client variable is not durable and can produce duplicate dogs or lost purchases after reconnecting. Restore the object once on the server, then publish the resulting object to eligible clients.

Restart and cleanup handling

On shutdown or replacement, remove the old dog object and clear its ownership record in one authoritative code path. On startup, restore at most one object for each valid owner. Handle a player who disconnects while the dog is alive, a dog that dies while its owner is offline and a database record for a player who no longer has permission to use the feature.

Controlled test plan

Run these tests on a private server before opening the feature to the public. Use a fresh database record and a second player account when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Fresh join: join the server, verify that no dog is created before the intended spawn or purchase action and check the client log for missing classes or functions.
  2. Spawn or purchase: perform the action once, confirm the correct price or role check, and verify that the dog is visible to the owner and another player.
  3. Basic commands: test follow, stay, sit, release and any vehicle entry or exit behavior at short and long distances.
  4. Detection: place a test explosive or other configured target, run the detection action and verify radius, marker visibility and cooldown behavior.
  5. Permission boundary: attempt every action from a non-owner and from a player outside the required faction. The server must reject unauthorized requests, not merely hide the menu.
  6. Reconnect: disconnect and reconnect the owner. Confirm that the existing dog is restored or that the documented temporary behavior occurs, without duplication.
  7. Death and replacement: kill or otherwise remove the dog, verify the database state, then buy or spawn a replacement once. Check that the old object and old actions are gone.
  8. Server restart: restart with the same mission and database. Confirm that exactly the intended dog records are restored and that no orphaned objects remain.
  9. Two-player visibility: have a nearby player observe movement, actions, detection markers and death. This catches client-only behavior that appears correct to the owner.
  10. Framework regression: repeat the join, purchase, restart and permission tests after every Altis Life or Arma update.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely causes What to check
Dog never spawns The dog files are outside the mission, the initialization call is not reached, or the class name is absent from your Arma build. Confirm the files are inside the loaded mission, trace the relevant init.sqf or function call, and check server and client logs for class errors.
Dog appears in the editor but not on the server Different mission configuration, missing server-side PBO, missing addon or incorrect remote-execution permissions. Compare the editor assumptions with the dedicated-server mission, verify life_server.pbo loading and required addons, and test the server’s allowed remote calls.
No interaction menu The action was added on the wrong machine or its condition fails. Check object locality, player locality, distance, alive checks, ownership conditions and the exact machine that runs addAction or the script’s equivalent.
Only the owner sees detection Markers or notifications are created locally by design. Choose owner-only, faction-wide or server-authoritative visibility, then broadcast only that result through the supported network path.
Duplicate dogs after restart Both the client and server restore the record, or the old object is not deleted. Make restoration server-authoritative, use one ownership record and clear or replace the object exactly once.
Dog feature breaks after a framework update Initialization order, variable names, database APIs or permissions changed. Rebase the integration against the exact Altis Life revision, then repeat the full controlled test plan.
Attack command looks wrong The historical script has no polished attack animation or relies on collision damage. Remove the command or implement a tested state machine with explicit animation, damage and friendly-fire rules; do not treat collision damage as a finished bite feature.

Maintenance rules for a production server

  • Keep the dog integration in a clearly separated mission folder or function namespace so framework updates can be merged without guessing which lines belong to the feature.
  • Record the exact dog files and configuration values used in production, including detection radius, marker policy, cooldowns and replacement rules.
  • Re-test after every Arma build, mission revision, database migration or change to server remote-execution settings.
  • Watch logs for repeated initialization, failed database writes, invalid object references and unauthorized remote calls.
  • Provide an administrator command or recovery procedure to remove an orphaned dog and repair its ownership record without editing live database rows blindly.

The practical result is a dog feature tailored to your server rather than a universal “Life Dogs” package. Start with a clean, working Altis Life installation, port only the dog script’s required code, make the server authoritative for ownership and persistence, and validate every interaction with more than one player. Historical Dog Friends and JBOY material can supply useful behaviors and examples, but compatibility with your current Arma 3 build and Altis Life revision must be demonstrated by your own controlled tests.
