Keep its familiar play loop—exploration, social interaction, and combat—and make the setting, stakes, and descriptions do the genre work. Before the first session, agree on the rules baseline and what your campaign means by Star Wars: its era, tone, use of the Force, and technology.
Keep the D&D play structure; change what it looks and sounds like
D&D’s Basic Rules group adventuring into exploration, social interaction, and combat, and describe a campaign as connected adventures with a continuing group and narrative. Those are useful planning anchors, not a quota: a session does not need equal time in each category. Give players consequential choices in the kinds of scenes they enjoy.

- Exploration: The party navigates a dangerous spaceport, searches a derelict vessel, or chooses a route through hostile territory. Make the place matter through obstacles, information, and consequences.
- Social interaction: Characters negotiate with a local power, persuade a reluctant contact, or try to extract information. Give the conversation a stake: what the party learns or how an NPC responds should affect what happens next.
- Combat: A blaster fight, an ambush, or a chase can fill the role of a D&D combat encounter. Use the rules your table has agreed on, and make the conflict serve the situation rather than appear just to provide a fight.
These are ways to frame familiar D&D activities, not official Star Wars rules. For encounter design, D&D Beyond recommends giving exploration a goal, a threat, choices, and consequences, rather than treating travel as empty space between set pieces. Its guidance also notes that roleplaying can feel disconnected from the rules when social scenes do not affect outcomes. Apply that principle by letting a missed clue cost time, a failed negotiation expose the party, or a poor route choice change who reaches the objective first. A setback can complicate the adventure without ending it.
Set the campaign’s boundaries before character creation
Players may have different ideas of what a Star Wars campaign should emphasize. A short group discussion prevents those assumptions from colliding after characters are built. These are table preferences, not an official canon checklist.

- Technology assumptions: Establish what equipment and capabilities characters can expect, and how much attention the campaign will give to ships and travel.
- Character fit: Ask each player what their character wants, why they work with the party, and which kinds of scenes let them contribute. Avoid assuming every D&D class has a direct Star Wars counterpart.
Choose a rules baseline the whole group understands
State which D&D edition and optional rules you are using. If you choose a conversion, explain which rules it supplies and which parts of your usual D&D baseline remain. Players should know what changed before they make decisions based on their characters’ abilities.
The official 2024 Player’s Handbook, released September 17, 2024, is a D&D reference for character creation and advancement, exploration, combat, equipment, and spells. It is not a Star Wars conversion, so using it as your rules reference does not by itself provide setting-specific mechanics.

For a Star Wars D&D campaign, SW5E describes itself as a comprehensive overhaul of D&D 5th edition. It is an existing conversion to evaluate, not a required choice. Decide whether its approach fits your group and verify its current rules and materials before adopting it; the available description alone does not establish the details of its classes, balance, availability, or maintenance.

Decide whether to adapt D&D or use a Star Wars-specific RPG
If preserving your group’s familiar D&D procedures is the priority, a D&D baseline or conversion may suit the campaign. If the group wants rules explicitly written around Star Wars elements, consider a purpose-built game instead. Fantasy Flight Games describes its Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition core book as including a gamemastering introduction and detailed rules for starships, combat, wounds and healing, and the Force.

| Question | D&D or a D&D conversion | Star Wars-specific RPG |
|---|---|---|
| How much existing D&D knowledge carries over? | Potentially more if you keep your group’s D&D baseline; the amount depends on the conversion and the changes you adopt. | Do not assume D&D procedures carry over; check the game’s rules. |
| How much support is described for setting-specific mechanics? | SW5E presents itself as a 5th-edition overhaul, but the available description does not establish detailed support for particular mechanics. | The cited core-book description explicitly includes starships, combat, wounds and healing, and the Force. |
| What should guide the choice? | Choose this direction if your group values familiar D&D procedures and is comfortable agreeing on adaptations. | Choose this direction if your group prefers a purpose-built Star Wars rules experience. |
These are decision prompts, not ratings: the available descriptions do not establish which game is best for a particular group or how much preparation either will require. Check current edition information and availability directly before choosing a book.
Build sessions around a problem, not just a sequence of set pieces
A continuing campaign can connect each session’s immediate objective to a larger faction, personal stake, or consequence. Give the party a clear problem and meaningful options for approaching it. Travel and investigation work best when they reveal information or force a decision; social scenes have weight when relationships or outcomes can change; combat belongs when the situation calls for it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- State the immediate objective. Give the party something specific to pursue, such as finding a missing contact or reaching a location before a rival group.
- Offer more than one consequential approach. Characters might investigate, bargain, take a riskier route, or confront an obstacle directly. Let their choices change what follows.
- Connect the result to the larger story. A clue can reveal a faction’s plans; an ally’s changed attitude can affect future help; a delay can let another force act first.
- Use combat when it follows from the fiction. An ambush or chase should arise from the party’s decisions and circumstances, not from a need to insert a fight into every session.
Make rulings clear and consistent
Tell players when a rule is modified and apply the decision consistently. If a change causes confusion or makes a character concept less enjoyable, revisit it between sessions rather than letting uncertainty persist. Wizards of the Coast’s D&D rules support page recommends consulting the rulebooks and discussing disagreements collaboratively; it also says the DM has final authority for the group’s imagined world. Its phrasing is: “Your DM has to make the final decisions on the fate of the characters in your collective imaginary world.”
