Before buying, confirm which game and rules line your group plans to use. Dungeons & Dragons books do not provide rules for a Star Wars RPG, and Star Wars rulebooks from different lines are not interchangeable. Ask your Dungeon Master or Game Master what the group already owns and which rules it expects to play.
First, identify the game and rules your group will use
For D&D, check whether the table uses the revised 2024 fifth-edition core rules or earlier fifth-edition books. For Star Wars, pick the specific RPG line that matches the campaign before choosing a book. Which D&D books are the 2024 core rulebooks?
Wizards of the Coast describes the 2024 core rulebooks as revised and expanded fifth-edition books, not a new edition. Its D&D Beyond FAQ, published August 18, 2022 and updated June 9, 2023, says existing adventures and supplements are compatible with the 2024 core rules. That compatibility can help if your group already owns older fifth-edition material, but agree on which rules to use at the table.

Which Star Wars RPG line should you buy for?
“Star Wars RPG” can mean distinct game lines, so do not select a core book by franchise name alone. The official product pages for the lines covered here describe different entry points and campaign roles.
Force and Destiny
The Force and Destiny Core Rulebook is presented by its publisher as the launching point for a campaign in that line. Choose it when the group intends to play Force and Destiny.

Edge of the Empire
Edge of the Empire Beginner Game is presented as an introduction to roleplaying concepts. The Edge of the Empire Core Rulebook is for starting or continuing campaigns in that line. If you are new to tabletop roleplaying, see whether the line you want has a beginner product before committing to a full core book.

Choose an entry point and format that fit
- Match the book to your role: a player may need character rules, while a Dungeon Master or Game Master may need broader campaign references. Ask before buying a book for the whole table.
- Decide between an introductory product and a core book: a Beginner Game can introduce tabletop roleplaying; a core book serves a specific line or rules set.
- Check physical and digital formats: the D&D Beyond purchase FAQ says its Marketplace sells physical books and physical-plus-digital bundles to US customers, and digital-only D&D Beyond content worldwide. The international D&D Store sells physical-plus-digital bundles to non-US customers; local game stores sell physical books without digital copies or bundle options.
- Check current stock and terms before ordering: format availability depends on where and how you buy. Retail stock and prices can change, so confirm the live listing rather than assuming a particular edition or bundle is available.
