The practical options are an unofficial Docker image that targets the 1.8.x line, or an older Steam/Wine helper project pinned to Nitrox 1.7.1.0. Whichever route you use, Nitrox requires inbound UDP port 11000 (or a VPN address such as Hamachi) and every player must use a compatible Nitrox version.

As of October 14, 2026, the Nitrox GitHub releases page labels 1.8.1.0 as the latest release, although its release date was not verified. The Docker maintainer reports support for 1.8.1.0 on x64 and ARM64, including Ubuntu 24.04. The Docker path is therefore the best starting point for a new Linux host; use the Wine script mainly when you specifically need its older 1.7.1.0 workflow.

What is officially supported?
Nitrox is the multiplayer modification for Subnautica. The project site lists Windows and Linux among supported platforms, but the official hosting and installation pages available at publication are written primarily for Windows. No official, Linux-specific server walkthrough was found. The Linux procedures below are community-maintained methods, not an official Linux package or support guarantee.
Before choosing a method, check the Nitrox releases page. It currently marks 1.8.1.0 as “Latest.” Because the release date and release-note details were not verified here, record the exact version you deploy and make sure clients use that same release family.

Requirements and decisions before installation
Linux host
Use a machine that can remain online while friends play. The Docker image maintainer reports testing on Ubuntu 24.04 and says the image works on both x64 and ARM64. Those are maintainer statements rather than a project-wide hardware guarantee, so check the image page when your distribution or architecture differs.
A legal Subnautica installation
The server container expects access to your Subnautica installation. The documented Docker layout mounts that installation inside the container at /mnt/subnautica. Keep the game files on a local, readable filesystem and use an absolute host path; a typo in the mount path can leave the server without the assets it needs.

Nitrox listens on UDP 11000. The official hosting guide explains the port requirement at Run and host a Nitrox Subnautica server. You must either forward UDP 11000 from your router to the Linux host or give players a VPN address, such as a Hamachi network address, instead of forwarding a public port.
Runtime uncertainty
Third-party documentation disagrees about the required .NET runtime. DeepWiki lists .NET 9.0 and says the launcher can install it when missing, while a generic CLRN article describes a compatible .NET runtime on Linux and cites .NET Framework 4.7.2 for Windows. These statements do not establish one authoritative Linux server requirement. The Docker image packages its own environment; for the script route, follow the helper project’s current instructions and treat any runtime error as a compatibility issue to resolve against the exact Nitrox version you selected.
Docker or Steam/Wine? Compare the Linux routes
| Route | Nitrox version targeted | What you manage | Official status | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Docker: cuteminded/nitrox-server |
1.8.x; maintainer specifically reports 1.8.1.0 | Container, game-file mount and UDP publication | Unofficial community image | New Linux deployments, including x64 or ARM64 hosts |
Steam/Wine helper: xdrm-io/nitrux |
1.7.1.0 | Steam prefix, Nitrox files and launch option | Older, unofficial community project | Existing setups that require the script’s pinned version |
Other Docker image: qub1/nitrox-server |
Not stated | Not stated | Unofficial; details not verified | Only after reviewing its current documentation yourself |
No source confirmed that a generic Wine or Proton installation can run the current Nitrox server by itself. Do not assume that launching the Windows server executable through Proton is equivalent to either documented route.
Method 1: Run the maintained Docker image
The image page for cuteminded/nitrox-server is the most recently maintained Linux path identified for the 1.8.x line. The maintainer says it works with Nitrox 1.8.1.0 on x64 and ARM64 and lists Ubuntu 24.04 among tested environments. Tags and startup details can change, so read the image page before deploying a production server.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1. Install and verify Docker
Install Docker Engine using your distribution’s supported package instructions, then verify that the daemon is running and that your account can execute Docker commands. A basic check is:
docker version
If this command fails with a daemon or permission error, fix Docker first. Nitrox cannot start until the container runtime can create and expose a UDP socket.
2. Locate the Subnautica directory
Find the directory containing your Subnautica installation. Use an absolute path, for example /srv/games/Subnautica. The host directory must be readable by Docker and must contain the game files expected by the image. Do not mount an empty parent directory by mistake.
3. Pull the image
docker pull cuteminded/nitrox-server
If you need a specific tag, select one documented on Docker Hub rather than guessing a tag name. Leaving the tag implicit follows the image’s current default, which can change; record the resulting image digest or version in your server notes.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
4. Start the container and publish UDP 11000
The documented pattern mounts the game at /mnt/subnautica and publishes Nitrox’s UDP port:
docker run -d --name nitrox-server -v /srv/games/Subnautica:/mnt/subnautica -p 11000:11000/udp cuteminded/nitrox-server
Replace /srv/games/Subnautica with your real path. The /udp suffix is essential; publishing TCP 11000 alone will not satisfy Nitrox’s network requirement.

5. Confirm startup
Check that Docker created the container and inspect its output:
docker ps --filter name=nitrox-server
docker logs nitrox-server
Look for a normal server startup message and the absence of file-not-found, permission or runtime errors. If the container exits immediately, run docker ps -a --filter name=nitrox-server and inspect the complete log before changing network settings.
6. Use Docker Compose when you want repeatable restarts
The image also provides a Compose variant. A minimal Compose file expressing the documented mount and port mapping is:
services:
nitrox:
image: cuteminded/nitrox-server
volumes:
- /srv/games/Subnautica:/mnt/subnautica
ports:
- '11000:11000/udp'
Save it as compose.yaml in a dedicated directory and start it with docker compose up -d. Use docker compose logs -f to watch startup. Before relying on this file, compare it with the current Docker Hub instructions for any required environment variables, additional mounts or supported tags; none were independently verified here.
7. Keep the version visible to players
Tell players the exact Nitrox version represented by the image. For a current deployment, that is expected to be 1.8.1.0 based on the maintainer’s statement and the release page’s “Latest” label, but verify the running image’s documentation and server output. A client on the 1.7.1.0 line should not be treated as interchangeable with a 1.8.x server.
Method 2: Use the older Steam/Wine helper project
The xdrm-io/nitrux project automates an older Steam/Wine-style setup. Its instructions pin Nitrox to 1.7.1.0, so this route is not a drop-in replacement for a 1.8.1.0 Docker server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Read the helper’s current instructions
Download or clone the repository from the link above and follow the README for its current script invocation. The repository is the authority for its own dependencies and prefix layout; do not substitute a random Wine or Proton command when the script expects a particular Steam arrangement.
2. Place Nitrox in the expected prefix
The documented layout unzips Nitrox into the Subnautica prefix at the C: drive root, producing a directory such as C:Nitrox. Preserve that location exactly unless the script documentation says otherwise. A Linux path like /home/user/Nitrox is not equivalent to the Windows path inside the prefix.
3. Set the Steam launch option
The helper’s launch option is:
-nitrox C:Nitrox
Enter it in Steam’s launch-options field for the relevant game entry, including the backslashes shown. The option tells the launcher where the Nitrox files live inside the prefix.
4. Open and forward the same server port
Even though this method uses Wine and Steam, the network requirement does not change: allow and forward UDP 11000 to the Linux host, or provide players with the host’s VPN address. If players can start the client but cannot join, test the port and routing before reinstalling the prefix.
5. Accept the version and maintenance trade-off
Use this route only when its 1.7.1.0 pin is acceptable. The repository is older than the Docker path, and no evidence confirms that its script has been updated for 1.8.1.0. Keep a copy of the exact archive and script revision that worked so an automatic update does not silently change your server.
Configure the firewall, router and player addresses
Host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for UDP 11000 on the Linux host. Docker’s published port does not automatically make the port reachable through every host firewall or cloud security group. Confirm the rule applies to the network interface that receives player traffic.

Router port forwarding
- Give the Linux host a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation or a static configuration.
- Create a router forwarding rule for UDP 11000 from the public interface to that LAN address and port 11000.
- Restart the container or server process if your setup requires it, then have a player outside your LAN test a connection.
Do not advertise a TCP-only rule. Nitrox’s requirement is specifically UDP 11000, as stated in the official hosting guide.
VPN alternative
If you cannot change the router, place the host and players on the same VPN network, such as Hamachi, and give players the host’s VPN address. The official guide lists this approach as an alternative to port forwarding. Players must use the VPN address rather than your public home address.
What address should players enter?
Players use the server host’s reachable address and Nitrox’s configured port. On a LAN, that is the Linux machine’s private address; through a router, it is the public address that forwards UDP 11000; through a VPN, it is the host’s VPN address. Share the address privately and avoid publishing your home network details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Client version and installation checks
Use the project’s Installing Nitrox guide for client installation steps and current launcher labels. Every player should install the same Nitrox release family as the server. If the server is built from the Docker image’s 1.8.x workflow, standardize on the corresponding 1.8.x client; if you use the Wine helper, standardize on its 1.7.1.0 package.
The Nitrox site states that the project is available for Linux, but that statement does not prove that every server component works under every Linux distribution, Wine version or Proton build. Keep the server and client environments as close as practical to the versions documented by the method you selected.
Runtime and compatibility troubleshooting
The Docker container exits immediately
- Run
docker logs nitrox-serverand read the first fatal error, not only the final shutdown line. - Verify that the host path in the volume mapping exists and contains the Subnautica installation.
- Check file permissions so the container can read the mounted directory.
- Confirm that your CPU architecture is one the image maintainer reports supporting: x64 or ARM64.
Players time out or cannot see the server
- Confirm the process is running and the container publishes
11000/udp, not only TCP. - Check the Linux firewall, router forwarding target and any cloud security-group rule.
- Ask an external player to test; a successful local-LAN test does not prove that the public route works.
- If using a VPN, ensure every player is connected to the same VPN network and is using the host’s VPN address.
The launcher reports a missing .NET runtime
Do not blindly install a Windows .NET Framework package on Linux. DeepWiki’s third-party setup page mentions .NET 9.0 and automatic launcher installation, while CLRN mentions a compatible runtime and references .NET Framework 4.7.2 for Windows. Because these claims conflict and neither is an authoritative Linux server specification, follow the selected image or helper project’s instructions for your exact version. Record the runtime version that resolves the error so future updates can reproduce the setup.
Clients report an incompatible version
Read the server’s startup output and identify the Nitrox build actually running. Compare it with each client’s launcher version. A 1.7.1.0 client paired with a 1.8.x server, or the reverse, is a version-management problem rather than a port-forwarding problem; install matching builds before changing the network.
Wine or Proton will not start the server
No source confirms generic Wine or Proton compatibility for Nitrox on Linux. Use the documented xdrm-io/nitrux helper, including its prefix layout and launch option, or switch to the Docker image. Mixing an arbitrary Proton version with the helper’s files can create failures that the project does not document.
Player capacity and practical expectations
The Nitrox project advertises a maximum of 100 connected players and recommends a player count of five on its site. These are project-level figures, not a Linux benchmark for your hardware or internet connection; the recommendation is the safer planning target. The Nitrox server features page is the relevant source for those published figures.
Start with a small private group, watch container or process logs, and increase the player count only after confirming that your host, upload bandwidth and world state remain stable. No published Linux-specific adoption statistic or independent capacity test was available, so avoid promising that a particular CPU, memory size or connection will sustain the advertised maximum.
Operational checklist
- Choose Docker for a new 1.8.x-oriented Linux deployment; choose the Wine helper only when its 1.7.1.0 pin is intentional.
- Record the exact Nitrox release and image or script revision.
- Mount the Subnautica files correctly; Docker uses
/mnt/subnauticainside the container. - Expose and firewall UDP 11000.
- Forward the port to a stable LAN address, or place all players on the same VPN.
- Give every player the matching Nitrox client version and the correct reachable address.
- Keep logs from a known-good startup so version or runtime regressions are easy to identify.
Bottom line
A Linux Nitrox server is feasible today, but it is community-supported rather than covered by one official Linux guide. The cuteminded/nitrox-server Docker image is the most current documented route found and targets Nitrox 1.8.x, with maintainer-reported x64, ARM64 and Ubuntu 24.04 support. The xdrm-io/nitrux Steam/Wine helper remains an option for a deliberately older 1.7.1.0 setup. In both cases, successful hosting depends on matching client versions and making UDP 11000 reachable, either through router forwarding or a shared VPN.
