A Linux host therefore needs SteamCMD to download the Windows files, Wine to run them, and a headless display layer such as Xvfb. Winbind is listed among the required support packages. Screen or a service manager keeps the process alive after you close an SSH session.

This guide covers a manual Wine installation, the port and configuration work required for public connections, a Docker-based alternative, and the operational checks that prevent lost saves. The documented default player limit is eight. No authoritative current CPU, memory, storage, or distribution minimum is published in the cited documentation, so choose a host with enough headroom for your intended player count and test it before inviting players.

What you are actually running
A dedicated server for The Forest is not a native Linux executable. SteamCMD installs the Windows server files, and Wine provides the Windows compatibility layer. Because the server is normally graphical software, Xvfb supplies a virtual display when there is no desktop environment. Winbind is installed alongside Wine by the Linux procedure. This arrangement is functional, but it has more moving parts than a native Linux daemon.
The host must remain powered on and reachable from the internet. A home computer can work if the router forwards the required ports and the ISP permits inbound traffic; a VPS avoids local power and router problems but still leaves firewall, updates, backups, and troubleshooting in your hands.

Choose an installation path

Use Wine when you want maximum control or already operate Linux servers. Docker is convenient when you are comfortable with containers and want the runtime isolated. Managed hosting costs more than an unused home machine, but it can reduce maintenance and improve uptime. The available documentation does not provide a current, authoritative price, performance benchmark, or resource table for any of these choices.
Prepare a persistent Linux host
Keep the machine online and reachable
- Use a system that does not suspend when you disconnect from SSH.
- Give the server a stable private address if it is behind a router; otherwise a DHCP change can invalidate port forwarding.
- Record the public address players will use. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not be possible.
- Reserve separate persistent locations for the game installation,
Server.cfg, and save data. Do not place saves in a temporary directory or an ephemeral container layer.
Install the required packages
The community Linux procedure calls for SteamCMD, Wine, Winbind, and Xvfb, with Screen optional. Debian- and Ubuntu-style systems commonly require enabling the 32-bit architecture before installing Wine and the 32-bit SteamCMD package. Package names differ between distributions, so use the equivalent packages from your distribution if these names are unavailable.

Confirm that the commands steamcmd, wine (or wine64), xvfb-run, and screen resolve before proceeding. A missing 32-bit Wine component is a common cause of an executable that fails immediately, while a missing Xvfb package prevents a headless launch.
Download the Windows server with SteamCMD
The dedicated-server files are identified by App ID 556450. Force SteamCMD to use the Windows platform so it does not look for a native Linux depot. Pick a persistent installation directory owned by the account that will run the service.

Run the same app_update command when you deliberately update the server. Stop the running process first, keep a backup of your configuration and saves, and review the release notes or current community instructions for changes to launch arguments.
Do not assume that a successful SteamCMD download proves the server is ready. The files are Windows binaries, and the next steps must provide Wine, a virtual display, explicit paths, and network access.

Create directories before configuring anything
A clear layout makes backups and upgrades safer. For example, keep the installation under $HOME/forest-server, configuration under $HOME/forest-config, and saves under $HOME/forest-saves. The names are yours; what matters is that each location is persistent and that the account running Wine can read and write them.

Keep a dated copy before changing player, password, or port settings. If you use Docker, the same principle becomes volume mounts: map both the configuration directory and save directory from the host into the container. The Docker implementation warns that omitting persistent mappings can prevent configuration and saves from surviving container recreation.
Build a Server.cfg that matches your plan
The Forest Wiki lists the principal settings below. Use the exact spelling and value format shown by the current wiki page; configuration keys can change with a server build.

Do not place comments, quotation marks, or extra punctuation in a value unless the current configuration format permits them. After editing, check that the file is readable by the service account and that the paths referenced by the launch command are the same paths you backed up.

Pass configuration and save paths at startup
The Linux instructions explicitly require configuration-file and save-folder parameters in the startup command. A server can appear to launch while still failing to load the intended world if those arguments are omitted or point to a different directory.
Keep the launch arguments in a script rather than typing them from memory. Use the exact executable name and path installed by SteamCMD, then append the current guide’s switches for the Server.cfg location and save-folder location. The option names are part of the server build’s command-line interface; verify them against the current Linux guide or the files distributed with the build before upgrading.

Add the documented switches immediately after -nographics, pointing them to $CONFIG_DIR/Server.cfg and $SAVE_DIR. If the server reports that a configuration file or save folder is missing, stop it and correct the arguments rather than creating duplicate files in Wine’s default profile.
Launch headlessly and survive an SSH disconnect
Test in the foreground first
Run the launch script interactively from the server account. The first Wine run may create a prefix and print setup messages. Watch for a successful host or listening message and for autosave activity. The community guide cautions that this setup can produce substantial error-looking output that is normal for Wine, Xvfb, or Unity; judge it by whether the server reaches a listening state, accepts a client, and saves data.

Screen is optional but useful while you are learning the server. Start a named session, launch the script, and detach without killing it.

screen -r forestExit the server through its normal shutdown mechanism before closing the Screen session. For unattended production use, a service manager is preferable because it can start the server at boot, restart it after a failure, and write logs to a known location. Whether you choose Screen or a service manager, make sure the process runs as an unprivileged account and that its working directory and environment are explicit.
Open and forward the required ports
The documented ports are 8766 for Steam, 27015 for game traffic, and 27016 for queries. Open them on the Linux firewall and, when the host is behind NAT, forward each one from the router to the server’s private address. A forwarding rule on the router does not bypass a blocked host firewall.

If you use a different firewall, create equivalent rules and follow the protocol requirements in the current server documentation. Restrict administration ports such as SSH to trusted source addresses where practical; the game ports must remain reachable by the players you intend to host.

Router forwarding checklist
- Assign the Linux host a stable private address.
- Create one forwarding rule for 8766, one for 27015, and one for 27016, targeting that address.
- Confirm the router is not applying a second firewall policy that blocks inbound traffic.
- Give players the public address, not the server’s private LAN address, unless they are on the same network.
- If the public address changes, update the address you distribute or use a suitable dynamic-DNS arrangement.
Validate the server before inviting a full group
Validation should be deliberate rather than assumed. From a remote client, search for the server or connect using the reachable address and confirm that the name, password behavior, and player limit match Server.cfg. Join with one player first, create or load a world, perform an action that changes progress, and leave normally.
Then stop the server in a controlled way, start it again with the same configuration and save paths, and verify that the world and progress remain. This restart check is especially important after moving directories, changing a Docker volume, or switching the Linux account that runs Wine. If a restart produces a fresh world, inspect the launch arguments and filesystem permissions before allowing more play.
Docker as a Linux alternative
A Docker implementation provides another Linux route. It packages the Windows server runtime and exposes the same three documented ports—8766, 27015, and 27016—while using environment variables for server identity and port settings. You need basic Linux, Docker, and networking knowledge.
The critical Docker rule is persistence. Bind-mount the host directories containing configuration and saves into the locations expected by the image. Store the compose file and volume data on non-ephemeral storage, back them up, and pin or record the image version you deploy. A container restart should not be treated as a backup; it only recreates the process from whatever data was mounted.
Before choosing an image, verify that it still identifies App ID 556450, documents the same port mappings, and supports the configuration variables you need. Image maintainers can change environment-variable names or internal paths even when the game itself has not changed. Treat the container documentation as the authority for its launch syntax, then apply the same firewall, NAT, password, and restart tests used for a Wine installation.
Updates, backups, and routine administration
Back up the right data
- Back up
Server.cfgbefore every configuration change. - Back up the entire save directory while the server is stopped or after a clean save.
- Keep at least one copy outside the game host so disk failure or an accidental delete does not remove every copy.
- Record the SteamCMD command, Wine prefix, launch arguments, and port choices alongside the backup.
Update in a controlled window
- Tell players the maintenance time and stop accepting new sessions.
- Allow the server to save and shut it down cleanly.
- Copy the configuration and save directories.
- Run SteamCMD with the Windows platform override and
+app_update 556450 validate. - Start the server with the same explicit paths and review logs for listening and autosave messages.
- Perform a short remote join and save test before announcing that the server is available.
Do not overwrite a working configuration with a sample file from a new package without comparing the keys. Preserve custom name, password, player-limit, VAC, port, and autosave values.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The process exits immediately
Check that Wine, its 32-bit component, Winbind, and Xvfb are installed. Confirm that you are running the Windows executable from the SteamCMD installation directory. Then verify that both the configuration-file and save-folder arguments are present and point to readable, writable locations.
The server runs locally but nobody can join
Check all three host firewall rules, router forwarding targets, and the address given to players. A server can listen successfully on the machine while NAT or an upstream firewall blocks the public path. Recheck the configured ports after every change; opening only the gameplay port is insufficient when Steam and query traffic use the other documented ports.
Players join, but settings are ignored
The process is probably loading a different Server.cfg than the one you edited. Print or inspect the launch script, use absolute paths, and compare file ownership and permissions. Stop duplicate Screen or service-manager sessions so two server processes are not reading different directories.
Saves disappear after a restart or container replacement
Find the actual save directory used by the running process and compare it with the directory you back up. In Docker, inspect volume mounts and ensure saves are not being written only inside the disposable container layer. Run the controlled restart test again after correcting the path.
Logs contain many errors
Wine and a headless Unity process can emit noisy messages that do not indicate a fatal fault. Look for the outcome: a listening server, successful remote connection, and autosave activity. Treat messages that coincide with an exit, failed bind, missing file, or absent save as actionable, and retain the surrounding log when asking for help.

Security and reliability decisions
- Run the server as a dedicated non-root account.
- Use a strong administrator password and a separate player password.
- Expose only the required game ports and protect SSH independently.
- Keep the operating system, SteamCMD files, Wine packages, Docker image, and router firmware maintained.
- Test backups by restoring them to a separate directory; a copied file that cannot be loaded is not a usable backup.
- Document who can change
Server.cfgand who can access the save archive.
The Linux approach is viable when you accept responsibility for the compatibility layer and network path. If that maintenance is not worth your time, managed hosting removes much of the operating-system work, but you should still verify its backup policy, restart controls, supported game version, port policy, and geographic location before paying.
