How to Send a Newsletter Using WordPress: A Complete WordPress.com and Jetpack Guide

Set up WordPress.com Newsletter or Jetpack to email new posts automatically, add a compliant signup form, import and validate subscribers, and know when a plugin or SMTP is the right tool.

The simplest way to send a newsletter with WordPress is to use the built-in Newsletter feature on WordPress.com, or Jetpack Newsletter on a connected WordPress site. Enable automatic post emails, set a recognizable sender and reply address, place a Subscribe block where readers can find it, import an existing list if necessary, test the message, and publish a standard post. With the default enabled, that post is emailed to subscribers automatically.

Use a newsletter plugin such as MailPoet or another service instead when you need branded templates, a different sender address, advanced automation, or scheduling beyond the normal post-notification workflow. SMTP solves a different problem: it routes general WordPress mail through a mailbox, but it does not change Jetpack’s new-post notification emails.

Choose the WordPress newsletter method that fits your site

Your choice depends less on the size of your audience than on how much control you need over the email itself.

Method Best fit Automatic delivery when a post is published Sender and branding control List and signup capabilities Automation, scheduling and analytics
WordPress.com Newsletter A blog that wants each new post delivered as an email Yes, when “Email new posts to subscribers by default” is enabled Sender name and reply address can be set in the newsletter settings Subscribe block, imports, unsubscribe controls and double opt-in support Scheduling, test emails, open and click statistics, paid subscriptions and subscriber management are supported
Jetpack Newsletter on a connected WordPress site A self-hosted or connected site using Jetpack’s post-to-email feature Yes, for standard post publication Uses the Jetpack newsletter sender controls; use a plugin when you need full control of the sender address Subscription blocks, subscriber export and list management Test emails and performance tracking are available
MailPoet or another newsletter plugin or service Campaigns that need custom layouts, a custom sender address, automation or advanced scheduling Depends on the plugin or service configuration Can send from your own email address and provide more template control Signup forms, subscriber management and automated emails are managed in the site dashboard when supported by the plugin Use this route when the built-in post-notification workflow is too limited
SMTP configuration Missing contact-form mail, store messages, password emails or other general site mail No; SMTP does not alter Jetpack subscriber notifications Routes general WordPress mail through a domain mailbox Does not provide newsletter signup, list management or consent tools Does not add newsletter templates, scheduling or newsletter analytics

WordPress.com describes the built-in feature plainly: “Every WordPress.com site includes Newsletter — the ability to send new posts via email to subscribers.” That makes it the shortest route for a gaming site that mainly publishes reviews, news, guides or regular updates and wants those posts to reach readers without building a separate campaign.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up the built-in Newsletter feature

1. Open the newsletter settings

  1. Sign in to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Open Jetpack → Newsletter. On WordPress.com, you can also use the site’s Newsletter settings.
  3. Review the default delivery and sender options before adding a form or publishing a post.

On a connected WordPress site, Jetpack supplies the corresponding newsletter feature. The exact menu can vary slightly with the site connection and dashboard layout, but the relevant area is the Jetpack Newsletter settings rather than the general mail or SMTP settings.

2. Decide whether every new post should be emailed

Turn on Email new posts to subscribers by default if ordinary post publication should trigger delivery automatically. This setting is designed for a post-based newsletter: publish a standard post and subscribers receive a notification containing that post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that every piece of content triggers an email. The automatic notification applies to a standard post. Pages, custom post types, empty posts and edits to posts that have already been published do not trigger the same new-post notification. If you need to email a page, a custom content type or a one-off campaign, use a newsletter plugin or service that supports that workflow.

3. Set a recognizable sender and reply address

Choose a sender name that readers will recognize, such as the name of your publication or gaming site, and set a reply address that someone actually monitors. A clear sender helps subscribers identify the message, while a working reply address gives them a reliable way to respond.

The built-in feature does not provide unlimited freedom over the From address and domain branding. WordPress.com’s guidance is explicit: “For full control of your sender address for emails to subscribers, send your newsletter with a plugin instead of the built-in Jetpack newsletter feature.” If showing a particular mailbox or sending domain is a requirement, decide that before you build your signup campaign.

Add a newsletter signup form

Use the Subscribe block

Add a Subscribe block to the places readers already use:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the homepage, near an explanation of what subscribers receive;
  • the sidebar or footer, for a persistent signup option;
  • individual posts, after a useful article or guide;
  • an overlay or floating button, if your design uses those surfaces without obscuring content.

Keep the invitation specific. A gaming site might explain that subscribers receive new game guides, patch explainers or review posts by email. Tell people what type of messages to expect and how often you generally publish. Do not imply that joining the newsletter grants permission for unrelated marketing.

Make consent and unsubscribing clear

WordPress.com documents double opt-in and unsubscribe support. Use those controls where available, keep the unsubscribe path in every message, and remove addresses that should no longer receive mail. A visible consent explanation is especially important if your site also collects addresses for account notices, giveaways or other purposes; a newsletter signup should not silently become permission for every other marketing use.

Import an existing subscriber list

  1. Open the newsletter’s Subscribers area.
  2. Choose the import option and provide the list in the supported format, such as a CSV file when offered by the dashboard.
  3. Check the addresses before completing the import. Remove malformed, obsolete or duplicated entries.
  4. Confirm that the people on the list previously agreed to receive this type of email. An old contact spreadsheet is not automatically proof of newsletter consent.
  5. After the import, review the subscriber count and use the export or management controls to keep a current copy of the list.

Imported addresses should be validated before sending. A failed or mistyped address can create delivery problems, and importing people without a relevant permission record can create a privacy and compliance issue. Start with a small review of the CSV rather than treating the import as a substitute for consent.

Write, preview and send your first newsletter

Create a standard post

  1. Create a new standard WordPress post, not a page or custom post type.
  2. Write the article and add the images, links and headings you want readers to see on the site.
  3. Choose the intended audience when the newsletter interface presents an audience option.
  4. Review the post and the email preview separately. The email rendering is the version subscribers will read in their inboxes.
  5. Send a test email to yourself or another reviewer. Check the subject, sender name, reply address, links, images, spacing and unsubscribe control.
  6. Publish the post when the website version and email preview are ready.

Publishing the standard post is the send action when automatic delivery is enabled. The post notification is not sent merely because you saved a draft, and editing an already-published post does not create a second new-post notification. If the post must go out at a particular time, use the built-in scheduling option or a plugin that provides the scheduling controls you need.

What subscribers receive

The built-in workflow turns the published post into an email update. This is efficient for a regular editorial cadence, but it is not the same as designing a separate marketing campaign for every audience segment. If you need different versions for new readers, paying members and inactive subscribers, choose a tool with segmentation and automation rather than relying only on post publication.

Monitor growth and performance

Use the subscriber area to review growth, manage addresses and export the list when needed. The built-in WordPress.com feature supports open and click statistics, so you can see how readers interact with the messages. Jetpack also provides performance tracking.

There is no authoritative benchmark here for a typical open rate, click rate, deliverability percentage or subscriber-growth rate for WordPress newsletters. Treat the figures shown for your own audience as directional trends, not as a promise that a gaming blog should hit a particular percentage. Compare similar sends over time and account for the subject, audience, send date and post topic.

When MailPoet or another service is the better choice

Move beyond the built-in feature when your email program is more than a stream of new-post notifications. Common reasons include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Custom templates: You want a designed newsletter layout rather than the standard post-based presentation.
  • A custom sender address: You need messages to come from a particular mailbox or domain.
  • Automation: You want welcome emails, onboarding sequences, reminders or other messages that are not tied to publishing a post.
  • Advanced scheduling: You need campaign timing and recurring sends that do not correspond to a post’s publication schedule.
  • Different audiences: You need targeted campaigns or separate journeys for groups of subscribers.

WordPress.com specifically identifies MailPoet as an option that sends newsletters from your own email address and lets you manage subscribers, signup forms and automated emails from the site dashboard. The trade-off is additional setup and another system to configure, maintain and monitor. Confirm that the plugin or service works with your WordPress plan before committing to its forms or sending method.

Understand what SMTP does—and does not do

SMTP is for the transport of general site email. It is useful when contact-form messages disappear, store emails fail, password-reset messages do not arrive, or a site sends enough routine mail that a domain mailbox is preferable to the default mail path. Where possible, match the SMTP sender domain to the domain used by the site.

SMTP is not a newsletter subscription system. It does not add a Subscribe block, collect consent, import a list, create campaign templates or provide newsletter statistics. Most importantly, the official guidance states: “An SMTP plugin changes the emails sent by your site. It does not change new post notification emails sent to subscribers via Jetpack.” Installing SMTP therefore will not give you control over the sender address used for Jetpack subscriber notifications. Choose a newsletter plugin when that sender control is the requirement.

Troubleshoot common WordPress newsletter problems

A post published but no newsletter arrived

  • Confirm that Email new posts to subscribers by default is enabled.
  • Check that you published a standard post rather than a page, custom post type or empty post.
  • Verify that the address is an active subscriber and look in its spam or promotions folder.
  • Remember that editing an already-published post does not send a new-post notification.
  • Send a test message from the newsletter settings to separate a delivery issue from a post-trigger issue.

The sender address is wrong

Review the newsletter sender and reply settings first. If the required From address cannot be selected there, SMTP will not fix Jetpack’s subscriber notification sender. Use a plugin or service that explicitly supports sending from your own email address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An imported list produces errors

Open the CSV and inspect the address column for malformed entries, duplicate rows and obsolete contacts. Import only people who have a valid permission basis for this newsletter. Correct the file, import again if the dashboard permits it, and send a test before mailing the entire list.

The signup form is hard to find

Place a Subscribe block in at least one persistent location, such as the footer or sidebar, and add a contextual form to high-traffic posts. Explain the benefit and expected content next to the form rather than relying on a button labeled only “Subscribe.”

Readers receive too many messages

Automatic delivery follows each qualifying post. If your publishing frequency is high or different readers need different topics, turn off the default post-email setting and use a plugin or service with scheduling, segmentation or digest-style automation.

A practical launch checklist

  • Newsletter settings are enabled in Jetpack or WordPress.com.
  • The automatic new-post setting matches your intended publishing frequency.
  • The sender name is recognizable and the reply address is monitored.
  • A Subscribe block appears on the homepage, a persistent site area or relevant posts.
  • The signup explanation says what subscribers will receive.
  • Double opt-in and unsubscribe controls are enabled where available.
  • Imported addresses were checked for validity and permission.
  • The first standard post was previewed as an email and tested to a real inbox.
  • The published post is the version you intend to email; later edits will not send another notification.
  • Subscriber growth, opens and clicks can be reviewed after delivery.

Which setup should a gaming site use?

Choose WordPress.com Newsletter or Jetpack when your primary goal is simple: publish a gaming article and automatically email it to people who subscribed. It minimizes setup and includes the core list, test, scheduling, statistics and unsubscribe functions needed for a post-driven publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose MailPoet or another newsletter service when the newsletter itself is a designed product—with a custom sender, branded templates, welcome automation, segmented audiences or campaign schedules independent of your editorial calendar. Configure SMTP separately only when ordinary WordPress messages need a more dependable domain-mail route. These tools solve different problems and can coexist, but adding SMTP alone will not turn Jetpack post notifications into fully branded campaigns.
