The shortest reliable setup is a two-line Dockerfile based on the official httpd:2.4 image, followed by a published port:
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
FROM httpd:2.4
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/
docker build -t my-apache2 .
docker run -d --name my-running-app -p 8080:80 my-apache2
Put an index.html file in public-html, then open http://localhost:8080. The Dockerfile selects Apache httpd and copies your site into the image’s document root; -p 8080:80 makes the container’s port 80 reachable as port 8080 on your computer.

What this setup creates
A Dockerfile is a plain-text build recipe. Docker reads each instruction, creates an image layer, and produces an image that can be started as a container. In this example, the image already contains Apache httpd, and your build adds static website files to Apache’s document root.
The official image listens on TCP port 80 inside the container. That internal port is not automatically reachable from the host. Publishing a host port at runtime is a separate operation, which is why the run command includes -p 8080:80.

Prepare the project directory
Create a directory for the image build context. The build context is the directory Docker can read when processing COPY. Keep the Dockerfile and the site directory together:

└── index.html
Your index.html can be any valid HTML document. For a quick verification page:

</body>

Save the following text as a file named exactly Dockerfile with no filename extension:
FROM httpd:2.4
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/
What each Dockerfile line means
FROM httpd:2.4 chooses the official Apache httpd image and the 2.4 tag. It supplies the Apache executable, its default configuration, and the image’s expected directory layout.
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/ copies the contents of the local public-html directory into Apache’s document root in the image. The trailing slash on the destination makes the intended directory clear. Files already present at that destination can be replaced by files from your project.

cd apache-docker
docker build -t my-apache2 .
The -t my-apache2 option gives the image a convenient name. The final period is important: it tells Docker to use the current directory as the build context. Docker reads the Dockerfile and the public-html directory from that context.
If the command succeeds, Docker has created an image named my-apache2. A missing Dockerfile, an incorrect working directory, or a misspelled public-html path will cause the build to fail before a container is created.
Start the container and publish Apache
Start the image in the background:
docker run -d --name my-running-app -p 8080:80 my-apache2
These options have distinct jobs:
-druns the container detached, so the terminal is returned to you.--name my-running-appassigns a stable container name for later commands.-p 8080:80maps host port 8080 to container port 80. The number on the left is the host port; the number on the right is the container port.my-apache2identifies the image to start.
Open http://localhost:8080 in a browser. You should see the contents of your index.html. If you change the HTML after building, the running container still contains the old copy because the files were baked into the image. Rebuild and recreate the container when using this image-based workflow:
docker build -t my-apache2 .
docker rm -f my-running-app
docker run -d --name my-running-app -p 8080:80 my-apache2
Understand EXPOSE, -p, and -P
You may add an EXPOSE instruction to document the port the image expects Apache to use:
FROM httpd:2.4
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/
EXPOSE 80
EXPOSE 80 records that the container listens on TCP port 80; it does not publish that port to your host. You still need a runtime mapping such as -p 8080:80.
| Option | Host address | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
-p 8080:80 |
Predictably localhost:8080 |
Documentation, local development, scripts, and any case where another person or tool must know the address | You choose a host port, so startup fails if that port is already occupied |
-P |
An automatically selected host port for each exposed port | Short-lived experiments where you do not need a fixed URL | The host port is ephemeral; inspect the container’s published ports before connecting |
For a predictable local URL, use -p. If you use -P, first include EXPOSE 80 in the image and then discover the assigned port with Docker’s container inspection commands or the port listing shown by your Docker tooling.

Choose between baked-in files and a bind mount
Copying files into the image is usually the better release model: the image contains the exact site version that will run. During active editing, repeatedly rebuilding an image can slow down the feedback loop. The official Apache image also supports mounting a host directory over the document root:
docker run -d
--name my-running-app
-p 8080:80
-v "$(pwd)/public-html:/usr/local/apache2/htdocs/"
httpd:2.4
The host directory is then visible directly at /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/ inside the container. Save an HTML change on the host and refresh the browser without rebuilding the image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Characteristic | Files copied into an image | Bind-mounted files |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment reproducibility | High: the image carries a fixed snapshot of the site | Depends on the host directory supplied at runtime |
| Edit turnaround | Rebuild and recreate the container after changes | Save on the host and refresh |
| Immutable release behavior | Strong: a tagged image can be promoted unchanged | Weaker: content can change independently of the image |
| Separation of content from the image | Content is packaged with the server image | Content remains outside the image and is mounted at startup |
Use the bind mount for an editing loop and the Dockerfile’s COPY approach for a distributable release artifact. Do not assume a bind-mounted directory is present in another environment; the host path and permissions must exist wherever the container is started.
Customize Apache’s configuration
The default configuration is often enough for static HTML. If you need modules, virtual-host settings, directory behavior, custom logging, or another Apache setting, start from the image’s default configuration rather than writing an entire configuration file from memory.
Export the configuration from the image:
docker run --rm httpd:2.4 cat /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf > my-httpd.conf
Edit my-httpd.conf on the host. Then build a derived image that replaces the default file:
FROM httpd:2.4
COPY ./my-httpd.conf /usr/local/apache2/conf/httpd.conf
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/
Build and run it as before:
docker build -t my-apache2-custom .
docker run -d --name my-running-app -p 8080:80 my-apache2-custom
Preserve configuration lines required by the base image unless you have deliberately replaced their behavior. A configuration that references a module or file that is absent from the image can prevent Apache from starting.

Check a configuration failure
If the container exits immediately, inspect its logs:
docker logs my-running-app
Logs commonly reveal a syntax error, a missing module, a bad path, or a port-related startup problem. After correcting the file, remove the stopped container, rebuild the image, and run a new container with the same name.
Serve HTTPS inside the container
The official image documentation describes an HTTPS setup based on a certificate and private key. Copy or mount server.crt and server.key into /usr/local/apache2/conf/, enable the SSL modules, enable conf/extra/httpd-ssl.conf, and publish the container’s HTTPS port:
docker run -d
--name my-running-app
-p 8080:80
-p 443:443
my-apache2
The exact certificate paths and SSL directives must match the configuration you enable. Keep private keys out of public source repositories and avoid baking production secrets into a broadly distributed image. Certificate issuance, renewal, trust configuration, TLS policy, and production hardening are separate operational responsibilities; the port mapping alone does not make an HTTPS deployment secure.

Pin the image version for repeatable builds
The 2.4 tag is more specific than an unqualified latest tag, but tags remain operational inputs that can change. Docker’s guidance recommends a numbered tag when you need a more controlled build. Docker Hub lists versioned httpd tags including 2.4.69 and 2.4, as well as Alpine variants.
For example, you can pin the Dockerfile to a numbered release:
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
FROM httpd:2.4.69
COPY ./public-html/ /usr/local/apache2/htdocs/
Check the available tag and its platform support at deployment time. A pinned tag improves repeatability, but it also means you must deliberately update the tag to receive newer Apache fixes. Establish an update process that rebuilds, tests, and redeploys the image when you change the base tag.
Troubleshoot a site you cannot reach
The browser says the connection was refused
- Confirm the container is running with
docker ps. - Check that the run command included a port publication such as
-p 8080:80. AnEXPOSEline by itself is not enough. - Use the exact host port from the left side of the mapping. With
-p 8080:80, browse tohttp://localhost:8080, not port 80. - Check whether another process already occupies host port 8080. Choose another host port, such as
-p 8081:80, and browse to the corresponding URL.
The container stopped immediately
Run docker ps -a to see stopped containers, then read the startup output:
docker logs my-running-app
A malformed custom httpd.conf, a missing file referenced by that configuration, or an invalid module directive can make Apache exit. Fix the configuration, rebuild, and recreate the container.
The browser shows the wrong page
- Verify that the file is named
index.htmland is insidepublic-htmlat build time. - Confirm the Dockerfile copies to
/usr/local/apache2/htdocs/. - If you changed files after building an image, rebuild it or use a bind mount for live editing.
- If you used a bind mount, verify that the host path is the directory containing the intended files; the mount hides the image’s original document-root contents.
The build cannot find the site directory
Run docker build from the directory that contains both Dockerfile and public-html, and keep the final . in the command. Docker cannot copy files outside the build context.
Apache works in the container but not from the host
Apache can be healthy on port 80 inside the container while the host has no route to it. Recreate the container with a published mapping, for example:
docker rm -f my-running-app
docker run -d --name my-running-app -p 8080:80 my-apache2
Then use the host-side port 8080. If you chose -P, identify the automatically assigned host port instead of assuming it is 80 or 8080.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical release checklist
- Keep the Dockerfile in the project root and verify every path used by
COPY. - Include an explicit
index.htmlor another intended entry document inpublic-html. - Build with a meaningful image tag and record the base httpd tag used.
- Run with an explicit
-p host-port:80mapping when users or automation need a stable address. - Use a bind mount only when host-side editing or external content management is intentional.
- Export and edit the base configuration before replacing
httpd.conf; test the resulting image before deployment. - Treat certificates and private keys as sensitive operational data.
- Check versioned httpd tags and update deliberately rather than relying on an unqualified moving tag.
- Inspect container status and logs whenever a browser cannot connect or Apache exits.
Commands to stop, restart, and remove the example
Use the container name assigned in the run command:
docker stop my-running-app
docker start my-running-app
docker rm -f my-running-app
Stopping preserves the container for a later docker start. Removing it deletes that container instance; the image named my-apache2 remains available for another run until you remove the image separately.
