For current UE5-era Squad, begin with the built-in Defaults benchmark, then tune upscaler resolution, Global Illumination Quality and Shadows around your GPU. Keep Windows and GPU drivers current, use a deliberately selected microphone, and verify every control change in the settings screen before returning to a match.

What the current Squad settings menu includes

Squad’s main-menu Settings area is divided into gameplay, video, sound and controls. Those groups solve different problems: video options determine how much work the GPU performs, sound options control playback and communication, and controls determine whether important actions are reachable without taking your hand off movement.

This guide follows the menu as it exists in the 10.6-era release and its recent hotfixes. Squad moved to Unreal Engine 5.5 in the 9.0 update, so recommendations written for older Unreal Engine 4 versions can be misleading. A preset or keybind that made sense before the engine migration may no longer be a sensible starting point.

Check the UE5 baseline before changing sliders

Use the supported rendering path

The official Update 9.0 graphics guide states: “DX11 is not supported.” Do not use an old DX11 launch option or guide as a troubleshooting step for the current game. Start with the rendering path offered by the current installation instead.

Confirm memory, drivers and Windows

The same guide asks players to have at least 6GB of graphics memory and to update GPU drivers and Windows to the latest available versions. The 6GB figure is version-sensitive rather than a permanent hardware law. Update 10.6 says Offworld Industries hopes to revisit the recommendation and possibly move it to 4GB after additional testing; that is an evaluation, not a confirmed replacement requirement.

  • Install the current driver supplied for your GPU model.
  • Apply pending Windows updates, then restart before benchmarking.
  • Close overlays, recording tools and background applications that compete for GPU memory while you establish a baseline.
  • Note your GPU generation. UE5 High and Epic are intended for modern GPUs, while previous GPU generations should begin lower and move upward only after testing.

Set graphics in the order that gives reliable results

1. Run the built-in Defaults benchmark

  1. Open Squad’s main menu and choose Settings.
  2. Open the Video section.
  3. Choose Defaults and let the game complete its benchmark or automatic setup.
  4. Play a repeatable short test—such as the same training or offline scene—before changing another option.

The Defaults result is a starting measurement, not a promise that every server, map or firefight will perform identically. Large battles, smoke, foliage and heavy lighting can impose different loads. Change one demanding setting at a time so you know which adjustment produced an improvement.

2. Decide whether the GPU or image reconstruction is the constraint

If the game is GPU-limited, lower the settings that perform expensive lighting and shadow work first. If the image is fast enough but soft, increase the upscaler resolution before raising every quality preset. This separates the performance-versus-sharpness decision from the overall quality decision.

3. Adjust upscaler resolution deliberately

Upscaler resolution trades internal rendering work for reconstructed output. A lower value can raise frame rate, but distant signs, foliage and fine edges may look softer or shimmer more. A higher value improves clarity while increasing GPU workload. Move in small steps, then inspect the same distant objects and weapon sights after each change.

Do not judge an upscaler setting from a menu alone. Check it while moving, looking through optics and scanning long sight lines. A value that appears sharp while standing still can reveal blur or temporal artifacts during movement.

4. Tune Global Illumination Quality

Global Illumination Quality is one of the settings the official guide identifies as demanding. Lower it when the benchmark and in-game testing show a GPU limit. The trade-off is less detailed or less convincing indirect lighting, especially in interiors, shaded terrain and areas where light bounces between surfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Tune Shadows

Shadows are another high-impact setting named in the official guidance. Reducing them can recover performance on a GPU-limited system, but objects may cast simpler, shorter-range or less detailed shadows. Check the result in foliage, buildings and open terrain rather than assuming a menu preview represents match conditions.

6. Choose a preset that matches the GPU generation

UE5 Medium is described as providing higher quality than the former UE4 Epic preset. That comparison is useful when reading old guides: “Epic” from UE4 is not automatically a better target than “Medium” in UE5. UE5 High and Epic are aimed at modern GPUs and are not recommended as a starting point for previous GPU generations.

Hardware situation Starting point What to change next Expected trade-off
Modern GPU with adequate VRAM Run Defaults, then test UE5 High; try Epic only if performance remains acceptable. Raise or lower upscaler resolution first, then inspect Global Illumination Quality and Shadows. Higher visual quality uses more GPU time and memory.
Previous-generation GPU Begin at a lower preset, commonly UE5 Medium or below as offered by the menu. Lower Global Illumination Quality and Shadows before sacrificing all image resolution. Reduced lighting and shadow detail for a steadier frame rate.
System close to the VRAM guidance Use Defaults and watch for hitching or texture-streaming problems. Reduce the most demanding quality options and keep drivers current. Lower fidelity may be preferable to stutter caused by memory pressure.

7. Test low presets as a diagnostic, not a permanent punishment

Update 10.6 notes that low graphics presets may improve performance at the cost of visual fidelity. Temporarily selecting a low preset is useful for confirming that the GPU or graphics workload is the cause of a problem. If performance improves substantially, raise individual options one at a time until you find the point where clarity and stability are acceptable.

Improve visibility without making Squad blurry

Visibility is not a single “best” slider. It is the result of internal resolution, lighting, shadows, anti-aliasing or reconstruction behavior, display resolution and the scene being viewed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep the display output at your monitor’s native resolution when possible.
  2. Start with the benchmark’s upscaler value rather than immediately choosing the lowest available resolution.
  3. If distant objects are soft, raise upscaler resolution one step before raising every quality setting.
  4. If the frame rate collapses in lighting-heavy areas, lower Global Illumination Quality.
  5. If the loss appears during foliage, buildings or changing daylight, lower Shadows.
  6. Recheck both a bright outdoor scene and a dark interior. A setting that is comfortable in one can be distracting in the other.

Sharper is not always more useful. Excessive reconstruction sharpening can make foliage shimmer and add visual noise, while very low internal resolution can erase small silhouettes. Choose the highest upscaler resolution that remains stable in the busiest scene you regularly play, not the quietest one.

Fix Squad microphone and VOIP problems

Update 10.6 records two relevant fixes: in-game VOIP could fail when Windows Audio Enhancements were enabled, and some players could not select or change an audio input device in Squad’s Settings menu. A working microphone therefore depends on both Windows routing and the device selected in the game.

Use this order of checks

  1. Connect the intended microphone and confirm that Windows detects it.
  2. In Windows sound settings, select that microphone as the active input device and verify that its input meter responds when you speak.
  3. Inspect the microphone’s Windows properties for Audio Enhancements. If VOIP fails or behaves inconsistently, test with enhancements disabled, then restart Squad.
  4. Open Squad’s Settings and enter the Sound section.
  5. Choose the intended input device instead of relying on an automatic or stale selection. If the menu previously would not let you change it, update 10.6 specifically addressed that issue.
  6. Check the game’s communication controls and speak in a private or low-consequence situation before joining a coordinated operation.
  7. If the microphone works in Windows but not in Squad, close other applications that may have taken exclusive control, reconnect the device and repeat the in-game selection.

There is no universal “correct” volume mix. Headset sensitivity, microphone placement, Windows levels and personal preference differ. Set the microphone so normal speech is clear without clipping, then adjust game and VOIP volumes separately while listening for both squad communication and environmental cues.

If teammates still cannot hear you

  • Confirm that the correct physical microphone is selected; a webcam or controller microphone can silently become the default.
  • Check that a mute switch on the headset, cable or operating system is not active.
  • Repeat the Audio Enhancements test after every Windows device change.
  • Leave and relaunch Squad after changing the default input if the game continues to display an old device.
  • Test again after a major game update, because audio-device handling can change in a hotfix.

Rebind controls without losing access to communication

Squad provides a dedicated controls area alongside gameplay, video and sound settings. Rebinding is most useful when it reduces hand movement while preserving dependable access to communication, stance, map and interaction actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe rebinding procedure

  1. Open Settings from the main menu and select Controls.
  2. Locate one action at a time instead of changing a large group of bindings simultaneously.
  3. Select the action, press the desired key or button, and inspect the displayed assignment.
  4. If the interface presents a numeric field or value, type the value and press Enter to apply it. Hotfix 10.6.1 changed this behavior so manually entered numeric values apply when Enter is pressed.
  5. Use the page’s own confirmation or apply control if shown, then move to the next action.
  6. Test the new binding in a safe environment before entering a match.

Hotfix 1 changed the rebinding page so pressing Escape no longer backs you out of the control-settings page. That makes Escape safer to press while navigating the page, but it does not replace deliberately confirming each assignment.

Choose bindings by task, not fashion

Action group Binding goal Check after rebinding
Communication Keep squad, local and other voice actions reachable without releasing movement for longer than necessary. Confirm each channel activates the intended indicator and does not conflict with another action.
Stance and movement Use keys or buttons that can be reached while maintaining directional control. Test crouch, prone and stance transitions under movement.
Map and information Make the map and other situational tools easy to reach repeatedly. Open and close the map, then return to movement without an unexpected alternate bind.
Interaction Place revive, reload, interact or equipment actions where they are reliable under pressure. Check that the new key does not overwrite a communication or movement action.

A comfortable layout is more valuable than copying a veteran player’s scheme. Hand size, keyboard layout, mouse buttons and accessibility needs all affect whether a binding is dependable. Change only the actions that cause a real reach or timing problem, and keep a short written record so you can restore an earlier arrangement.

Diagnose common settings failures

The benchmark is acceptable, but matches stutter

Compare a quiet scene with a busy one. If the issue appears only during heavy lighting, foliage or smoke, reduce Global Illumination Quality or Shadows. If hitching coincides with memory use or texture loading, return to a lower preset and verify that your system meets the current VRAM guidance. Do not infer that a benchmark in an empty scene represents a full server.

The picture is fast but unreadably soft

Raise upscaler resolution one step and retest the same distant objects. If performance falls too far, keep the higher resolution and lower a demanding quality setting instead. This preserves more edge detail than lowering the internal resolution again.

VOIP broke after a Windows change

Recheck the Windows input device, disable Audio Enhancements as a test, then select the device again inside Squad. Restart the game after changing the system default. The 10.6 fixes show that both enhancement processing and in-game device selection can affect voice chat.

A key appears bound but does nothing

Return to Controls, select the action, enter the binding again and verify that the displayed value changes. For numeric settings, press Enter after typing. Test the action outside a live firefight and check for a conflicting assignment.

Revisit settings after updates

Squad’s settings behavior is not frozen. Version 10.6 includes performance work, while hotfixes changed numeric-value application and rebinding-page navigation. After a major update, rerun Defaults, inspect your input device, and test the controls you rely on most.

Keep the version qualification attached to hardware advice: the 9.0 guide says at least 6GB of VRAM, whereas 10.6 only says a possible 4GB recommendation is being evaluated with additional testing. Until a later official guide confirms a change, treat 6GB as the published baseline and 4GB as an unconfirmed possibility rather than a guarantee.

A repeatable five-minute setup routine

  1. Update Windows and the GPU driver, then restart.
  2. Open Video settings and run Defaults.
  3. Play the same demanding test scene and note whether the limitation is frame rate, hitching or image softness.
  4. Adjust upscaler resolution for sharpness; adjust Global Illumination Quality and Shadows for GPU performance.
  5. Open Sound settings, select the intended microphone and test with Windows Audio Enhancements disabled if VOIP is unreliable.
  6. Open Controls, rebind only high-value actions, press Enter for numeric values, and test every change before joining a match.

This sequence keeps the variables separate: graphics changes address rendering, Windows and device selection address voice input, and deliberate confirmation addresses control reliability.
