You can make OBS loop a video or playlist and start streaming automatically from your Ubuntu desktop session. The reliable distinction is that this is a graphical-session startup task—not a conventional headless system daemon: OBS on Linux needs X11 or Wayland, so a service launched before a desktop session may fail. Configure the stream interactively first, then arrange for OBS to start as the same desktop user and test the complete restart path.

Choose the right kind of background startup

OBS is a graphical application. Its Linux system requirements specify an X window system or Wayland and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; a system service launched before login may not have a display to render into. The practical default is to start OBS automatically inside the target user’s graphical session, after you have configured and tested it there.

OBS’s official Linux installation page, published in 2021, describes Ubuntu 18.04 or newer for its instructions. That is an older threshold, not a guarantee about current package availability or support. Check the current Ubuntu release and OBS installation guidance before relying on those commands for a new machine: OBS Studio on Linux.

OBS documents command-line options, including --startstreaming, but that does not establish a supported headless mode or a universally reliable systemd service configuration. Avoid treating a boot-time system daemon with no desktop session as the standard solution. OBS itself cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” — OBS Project, System Requirements, 2021-08-25.

Set up a looping source in OBS

Loop one video file

  1. Open OBS as the Ubuntu user who will run the stream. Create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add Media Source. Name it, then choose the local video file.
  3. Enable Loop in the source properties and confirm the preview plays and restarts at the end.
  4. Check that the file path is accessible to this Ubuntu account and will remain unchanged. A file in another user’s private home directory may not be readable by the account that starts OBS.

OBS Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. The source’s Loop setting repeats the selected file when playback finishes. See the OBS Media Sources guide.

Loop a playlist

  1. Install VLC if the VLC Video source is not available in OBS.
  2. Add a VLC Video source, create or select its playlist, and add the files in the order you want them played.
  3. Leave Loop Playlist enabled (it is enabled by default), then check playback and the transition from the final item back to the first.
  4. Make sure every playlist file is readable by the Ubuntu account running OBS. For 64-bit OBS, OBS documentation specifies that VLC must also be 64-bit.

For one file, Media Source is the simpler option; for several files in a defined order, VLC Video provides playlist playback and looping. OBS documents both source types in its Media Sources guide.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live safely

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
  2. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube if the installed OBS version offers the integration, or use its custom server and stream-key fields with the details from Live Control Room.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public unit file, screenshot, example, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
  4. Start streaming from OBS and confirm the preview and event state in Live Control Room. A connected encoder does not necessarily mean a scheduled event has become public: auto-start and auto-stop depend on the stream’s YouTube settings.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to use the stream URL and key, preview the feed, and stop the encoder and event. For a scheduled broadcast, verify that the event is actually live in Live Control Room rather than assuming OBS’s connection alone made it public. If the key may have been compromised, YouTube says it can be reset there: Manage your live stream settings.

Set output quality for your upload connection

Choose settings based on YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and the sustained upload capacity available to the machine. YouTube’s H.264 RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and publishes these example bitrate recommendations. These are YouTube recommendations on a page accessed 2026-10-03, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain them.

H.264 output YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

Use CBR for H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS and set the keyframe interval to two seconds, ensuring it does not exceed four seconds. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and select a bitrate your upload link can maintain; leave headroom for normal network variation. The figures above are only selected H.264 rows, not YouTube’s complete table. Check its current encoder settings for other resolutions, frame rates, codecs, ingest options and minimums.

Start OBS in the logged-in desktop session

  1. Finish configuring the scene, media source, stream settings and output while logged in as the Ubuntu user who will operate the stream.
  2. Test manual streaming first. Confirm OBS can render the scene, read every media file, connect to YouTube and produce the expected sound and picture.
  3. Configure OBS to launch automatically using the startup mechanism provided by your Ubuntu desktop environment. Keep it in that user’s graphical session so the required display and devices are available.
  4. If using OBS’s --startstreaming launch option, validate it with the installed OBS version and your YouTube event. The option requests streaming when OBS starts; it does not itself supply a display, create a desktop session, or guarantee the YouTube event is public.
  5. Restart the desktop session and verify OBS opens, loads the intended scene and source, and connects as expected. Then test a full machine reboot with the intended login behavior.

A systemd user service can be an operational pattern in some desktop setups, but its behavior depends on the Ubuntu session, display environment, audio devices, media permissions and OBS package. The official OBS command-line documentation does not provide a complete, generally supported systemd configuration. Validate any such setup locally rather than copying an untested unit file and assuming it will work.

Test the complete loop and recovery path

Before relying on an unattended stream, OBS recommends a short test; YouTube also recommends testing with representative movement and audio and monitoring stream health. Run these checks on your own machine—these are verification steps, not guarantees of a particular outcome.

  • Loop boundary: watch the end of a video and its restart, or the final playlist item returning to the first. Check for a black frame, silence, or an unexpected pause.
  • Audio and picture: listen and watch the YouTube preview or watch page, not only the OBS preview.
  • Startup: restart OBS and then the desktop session; confirm the scene and files load and the encoder reconnects.
  • Network interruption: test what happens after a brief connection loss and confirm both OBS and Live Control Room show the expected state after reconnection.
  • Event status: check whether the YouTube event is previewing, live, or ended. Scheduled stream behavior depends on its auto-start and auto-stop settings.

For testing guidance, see the OBS Quick Start Guide and YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Understand long-stream and archive limits

YouTube’s encoder setup help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a single OBS session can run indefinitely or that a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived in full. If the stream must run for days or its archive is important, verify current YouTube behavior for your account and event configuration, and plan how you will handle interruptions and any required recording separately.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
OBS fails to open or renders a blank scene at startup It launched outside the graphical session or lacks display access. Start it as the target desktop user after login; check the Ubuntu session’s X11/Wayland environment and OBS’s Linux display requirements.
Media source is black, silent or missing Wrong path, inaccessible file, unsupported media or missing playlist dependency. Open the source properties interactively, confirm the path and permissions, and test playback. For VLC Video, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS.
OBS is connected but viewers do not see a live event The event may still be in preview or its auto-start setting may be off. Check Live Control Room and explicitly start the event when required by its schedule/settings.
Stream drops or reports poor health The upload link may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the network is unstable. Check YouTube stream health, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and test again on the actual connection.
Automatic startup works after login but not after reboot The startup method may depend on an active user session, device availability or login timing. Test the exact reboot and login sequence you intend to use; do not assume a user-session launch is a boot-time daemon.
