Windows 11 no longer offers Microsoft’s former Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) and Amazon Appstore route for new installs: Microsoft says both stopped being available in the Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025. The currently documented Microsoft option is Phone Link, which lets you view and use supported apps from a linked Android phone on your PC—but the apps still run on the phone, not Windows.
What works now: Phone Link mirrors apps from your Android device
Phone Link can display apps installed on a connected Android device in Windows. It is a phone-to-PC access and control experience, not an Android installation or standalone emulator on the PC. Your phone must remain the device running the app. See Microsoft’s Phone Link app guidance for supported features and device details.
Set up Phone Link
- On your Windows 11 PC, open Phone Link from the Start menu.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to link your Android device. Keep the phone and PC connected and follow the permissions prompts on the phone.
- In Phone Link, open the apps experience and select an app installed on your phone. Phone Link shows the app on the PC while it runs on the phone.
Microsoft’s linked guidance describes the feature and its compatibility limits; the exact screens and available options can vary by device.
Check compatibility before relying on multiple apps
- Microsoft says using multiple Android apps at once requires Android 11 and a select Samsung or HONOR device. For most other Android devices, only one Android app can be open at a time.
- Some games and apps may not work well with a mouse or keyboard.
- Phone Link does not support multiple Android profiles or work or school accounts for this feature.
These limits matter for gaming: Phone Link can be convenient for accessing a supported mobile game from the PC, but it does not turn the game into a native Windows PC game, and mouse and keyboard support is not guaranteed.

Why the old WSA and Amazon Appstore instructions no longer work for new installs
Microsoft Support states: “Starting March 5, 2025, Windows Subsystem for Android™ and the Amazon Appstore aren’t available in the Microsoft Store.” That means older Windows 11 setup guides describing a new Store installation are outdated for new users. Microsoft’s older WSA setup documentation remains online, but it is not a current route to obtain WSA or the Appstore.
WSA was a local subsystem-and-catalog approach, unlike Phone Link’s mirrored-phone approach. The old setup page listed Windows 11, an x64 or ARM64 processor, and Virtual Machine Platform enabled; it recommended 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. It also noted that Amazon Appstore availability was limited to selected regions and app downloads required an Amazon account. These are historical requirements, not a way around Microsoft’s discontinuation notice.

If you need an Android environment installed and running independently on Windows, Phone Link does not provide that. Microsoft’s current documented path is for accessing apps already on a compatible linked phone. The availability and safety of third-party Android emulators are not established by these Microsoft support sources, so this article does not recommend one.
