How to Run Projects with Different Django Versions Using virtualenv

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create one isolated environment for each Django project. Choose the Python interpreter that project supports, create its environment, activate it, install a pinned Django release and the project’s other dependencies, then run commands through that environment’s Python. Each project can therefore use a different Django version without replacing another project’s installation.

Why separate environments solve the version problem

A system-wide Django installation is shared by every project that can see it. Installing or upgrading Django for one application can silently change the version imported by another application, while incompatible third-party packages can make the conflict worse. A virtual environment gives each project its own Python executable, package directory and command-line entry points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When an environment is active, python, pip, django-admin and commands launched through manage.py resolve to that environment. The project directory and its environment become a deliberate pairing: activate the environment for Project A and Django A is used; activate Project B’s environment and Django B is used instead.

The environment does not alter the project’s source code or database. It isolates installed Python packages. Your source tree, settings, media, database and deployment configuration remain separate concerns and still need their own management.

Choose the Python interpreter before choosing Django

The interpreter used to create an environment determines the Python runtime inside it. Django and its dependencies must support that runtime, so interpreter selection comes before package installation. A project that was built with one Python version should not be moved casually to another merely because both environments can install the same Django release.

  • Identify the Python version expected by the project, its deployment target and its pinned dependencies.
  • Check that the selected interpreter is installed and callable under the name you plan to use, such as python3.11 on Unix-like systems or py -3.11 on Windows.
  • Create the environment with that interpreter rather than creating a generic environment and hoping the package resolver selects a compatible runtime.
  • Record the interpreter choice in the project’s setup documentation or automation so another developer can reproduce it.

The virtualenv documentation states that, by default, virtualenv uses the same Python version as the interpreter that runs it. It can also discover an explicitly selected interpreter through standard mechanisms. In practice, the executable in the creation command is your compatibility decision.

venv or the virtualenv package?

Python includes the standard-library venv module in supported installations. The separate virtualenv package is an alternative environment creator with its own interpreter-discovery and bootstrapping behavior. Both produce an isolated environment that can install Django with pip; choose the option that fits the project’s existing tooling and Python installation.

Question Standard venv virtualenv package
Creation form pythonX.Y -m venv ENV_DIR pythonX.Y -m virtualenv ENV_DIR, optionally with an explicit interpreter
Interpreter choice Uses the interpreter running the module Uses the interpreter running it by default and can select one explicitly through its options
Availability Ships with the Python installation when the module is present Must be installed in a Python environment that can run the tool
Tooling fit Convenient where the project already standardizes on the standard library Useful where the project, automation or team already standardizes on virtualenv
Recreation Recreated from the same interpreter and dependency pins Recreated from the same interpreter and dependency pins

The isolation principle is the same: do not share a single environment between unrelated projects simply because the environment creator is the same.

Recommended layout for multiple Django projects

Keep each environment next to, or clearly associated with, the project that owns it. A common layout is:

project-a/ # Django 4.2 application
  manage.py
  requirements.txt
  .venv-django42/
project-b/ # another application and another Django release
  manage.py
  requirements.txt
  .venv-django51/

A leading dot keeps the environment unobtrusive on Unix-like systems, while a descriptive suffix makes its purpose clear. Do not commit the environment directory itself to version control. Commit the dependency specification and any setup notes needed to rebuild it.

python3.11 -m venv .venv-django42
source .venv-django42/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install "Django==4.2.*"
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python -m django --version
  1. Create: python3.11 -m venv .venv-django42 builds an environment with Python 3.11.
  2. Activate: source .venv-django42/bin/activate changes the current shell’s command lookup.
  3. Prepare pip: upgrading pip is optional but helps the environment resolve and install packages consistently.
  4. Install Django: Django==4.2.* restricts installation to the 4.2 release line while allowing a matching patch release. Use an exact patch pin when the project requires byte-for-byte reproducibility.
  5. Install the rest: requirements.txt should contain the application’s other direct and transitive requirements according to the project’s dependency policy.
  6. Verify: the final command reports the Django version imported by the activated environment.

Using the separate virtualenv command

Install virtualenv with a Python interpreter you control, then select the interpreter explicitly when creating the project environment:

python3.11 -m pip install virtualenv
python3.11 -m virtualenv --python=python3.11 .venv-django42
source .venv-django42/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install "Django==4.2.*"
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python -m django --version

Using python3.11 -m virtualenv ensures that the virtualenv module itself is invoked by the intended interpreter. The --python option makes the runtime choice explicit; use the spelling supported by the installed virtualenv version if your project’s tooling specifies a different form.

Create the environment in Windows PowerShell

Using venv and the Python launcher

PowerShell uses a different activation script path. The equivalent workflow is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
py -3.11 -m venv .venv-django42
.venv-django42\Scripts\Activate.ps1
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install "Django==4.2.*"
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python -m django --version

The Python launcher’s py -3.11 selector chooses the installed 3.11 interpreter for creation. After activation, using python -m pip ties pip to the active environment rather than relying on whichever standalone pip appears first on PATH. The documented Windows sequence may also use py -m pip; if that command resolves outside the active environment on your machine, prefer python -m pip and verify the path before installing.

If PowerShell blocks activation

PowerShell can refuse to run Activate.ps1 because of its execution-policy settings. That is a shell policy issue, not a Django version conflict. You can either use a permitted shell, use the activation method approved by your organization, or bypass activation and invoke the environment’s interpreter directly:

.venv-django42\Scripts\python.exe -m pip install "Django==4.2.*"
.venv-django42\Scripts\python.exe -m django --version
.venv-django42\Scripts\python.exe manage.py check

Direct invocation is also useful in scripts and CI because it does not depend on shell state.

Using virtualenv on Windows

py -3.11 -m pip install virtualenv
py -3.11 -m virtualenv --python=3.11 .venv-django42
.venv-django42\Scripts\Activate.ps1
python -m pip install "Django==4.2.*"
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python -m django --version

If virtualenv cannot find the requested interpreter by version, pass the full path to that Python executable using the option format supported by your installed virtualenv release.

Install the exact Django version a project expects

Patch-range pin

Django==4.2.* expresses a major-and-minor line while accepting a compatible 4.2 patch release. This is useful when the project intentionally tracks security and bug-fix updates within that line.

Exact release pin

Django==4.2.16 (or the exact release recorded by the project) asks pip for one version. Exact pins improve reproducibility, but they also mean updates must be planned deliberately. Carry the pin in the dependency file so a fresh environment receives the same selection.

Why an unqualified install is risky for legacy projects

python -m pip install Django asks pip for the current release permitted by the package index at install time. That is appropriate for a new project following current documentation, but it can move an older application onto a release it has never tested. Reproducing an existing project should start from its declared Django constraint rather than an unqualified latest install.

Django’s official download page shows python -m pip install Django==6.1.2 as a version-pinned example and advises using documentation that matches the installed version. Treat 6.1.2 as the example shown on that page, not as a timeless recommendation: check the current Django page and the project’s supported version before copying a release number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the rest of the dependency set

Django alone rarely describes a working application. Database drivers, form packages, image libraries, task queues and deployment tools can each impose their own Python and Django constraints. Install the project’s dependency file after selecting Django so the resolver can detect conflicts in the intended environment.

python -m pip install -r requirements.txt

Keep dependency files under version control. If the project distinguishes top-level requirements from a fully resolved lock file, use the project’s documented file for each purpose and regenerate it through the team’s normal process. Do not “fix” a conflict by installing a second Django version into the same environment; one environment has one active installation of a package name.

Verify that every command is using the intended environment

Activation changes shell lookup, but verification removes guesswork. Run these checks after activation:

python -m django --version
python -c "import sys, django; print(sys.executable); print(django.get_version())"
python -m pip show Django
  • python -m django --version reports the Django package imported by that Python.
  • The interpreter check prints the executable path and imported Django version together, which exposes accidental use of a global Python.
  • python -m pip show Django displays package metadata for the same interpreter because pip is launched through python -m.

On Unix-like systems, which python and which django-admin should point into the environment directory. In PowerShell, Get-Command python and Get-Command django-admin provide the equivalent path check. A prompt that displays the environment name is helpful, but it is not a substitute for checking the executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Django commands without accidentally crossing environments

Prefer the active interpreter for project operations:

python manage.py runserver
python manage.py check
python manage.py test
python -m django --version

Calling python manage.py makes the selected interpreter explicit. A directly executed manage.py may use its shebang or file association, which can point somewhere unexpected if the environment was moved or recreated. Likewise, a globally installed django-admin can target a different Django installation. If there is any doubt, replace it with python -m django or the environment’s absolute Python path.

When you finish working on a project, run:

deactivate

Then change to the other project, activate its environment and verify its version before running migrations, tests or the development server.

Switch between projects safely

  1. Stop any running development server or shell that belongs to the first project.
  2. Run deactivate in the current shell.
  3. Change directory to the second project.
  4. Activate its environment: source .venv-djangoXX/bin/activate on Unix-like systems or .venv-djangoXX\Scripts\Activate.ps1 in PowerShell.
  5. Run python -m django --version and check the executable path.
  6. Only then run python manage.py commands for the second project.

Opening separate terminal windows is another practical option. Each window has independent activation state, which reduces the chance of running a command for one project while the other project’s environment is active.

Rebuild an environment instead of copying it

Virtual environments are disposable installations, not portable application archives. When onboarding a developer, changing machines or repairing a damaged environment, create a new environment with the required interpreter and reinstall from dependency pins. Do not copy an environment directory from another operating system or assume that absolute paths inside it remain valid.

  1. Install the required Python interpreter.
  2. Create a new environment in the project directory.
  3. Activate it, or use its absolute Python executable.
  4. Install the pinned requirements.
  5. Run the project’s checks and tests.
  6. Record any interpreter or system-library prerequisite that was missing.

This process makes the environment reproducible and reveals missing dependencies instead of preserving a hidden, machine-specific state.

Upgrade Django with a fresh environment

For a major Django upgrade, the official upgrade guidance notes that users of virtual environments might want to set up a new environment with all dependencies first. That approach keeps the current environment available as a rollback point while the target version is evaluated.

Fresh-environment migration pattern

  1. Freeze the starting point: commit the current dependency files and ensure the existing application is in a known-good state.
  2. Copy the specification: make a branch or separate requirements file for the target Django line. Change only the dependencies intentionally included in the upgrade.
  3. Create a sibling environment: use the compatible Python interpreter and a new directory such as .venv-django51; leave the old environment untouched.
  4. Install the target set: install the target Django release first or through the resolved requirements file, then install the remaining dependencies.
  5. Run checks: execute python manage.py check, the project’s automated tests and any linting or type checks used by the project.
  6. Exercise upgrade-sensitive paths: test authentication, admin screens, forms, background jobs, API endpoints, static files and database interactions that the application actually uses.
  7. Apply database changes deliberately: review migration plans and take the normal backup before applying migrations to shared or production databases.
  8. Switch only after validation: update the documented environment name, deployment configuration or service command to the new environment, retaining the old one until rollback is no longer needed.
Approach Rollback safety Dependency-conflict risk Testing effort Operational impact
Upgrade in place Lower; the previous package set is overwritten unless separately captured Higher when several packages need coordinated changes Still required, but the old environment is less convenient to compare Potentially shorter setup time, followed by repair if the upgrade fails
Build a fresh environment Higher; the existing environment remains available Conflicts are exposed during a clean install Requires a deliberate test pass against the new environment Requires a controlled switch after validation

Common failures and precise fixes

“Django is installed, but the version is wrong”

Check python -c and python -m pip show Django rather than relying on a bare pip. If the executable path is outside the project environment, deactivate, activate the correct environment and reinstall through python -m pip. If the path is correct, inspect the requirements file for a second constraint that overrides the version you intended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The activate script cannot be found”

Confirm that the environment was created successfully and that the shell path matches the platform: bin/activate on Unix-like systems and Scripts\Activate.ps1 in PowerShell. A failed creation command can leave no activation script; recreate the environment after correcting the interpreter command.

“No compatible distribution can be installed”

The selected Python interpreter may not satisfy the Django release or another pinned dependency. Verify the interpreter with python --version, inspect the project’s supported versions and recreate the environment with the required Python executable. Do not solve a runtime mismatch by removing a deliberate version pin without checking the application’s compatibility.

“manage.py uses a different Django version”

Run the command as python manage.py ... after activation and print sys.executable. If direct execution uses a different interpreter, stop using the ambiguous file association or shebang and invoke the environment’s Python explicitly.

“pip installed into the wrong place”

Use python -m pip rather than a standalone pip. This binds pip to the Python executable named by python. In automation, use the environment’s absolute interpreter path so the script does not depend on activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The project worked before, but a rebuild fails”

A dependency file may contain a broad range rather than a complete resolution, or a package may now require a different system library. Compare the old environment’s recorded dependency information with the project’s committed files, restore the intended pins and document any external prerequisite. The correct fix is a reproducible specification, not a shared global installation.

Use the same discipline in editors, CI and deployment

Editors and test runners often let you select a Python interpreter independently of the shell. Point them at the project environment’s executable: .venv-django42/bin/python on Unix-like systems or .venv-django42\Scripts\python.exe on Windows. Then run the editor’s integrated terminal and test commands through that interpreter.

Continuous-integration jobs should create a fresh environment for the job, install the committed dependency set and run checks with that environment’s Python. Deployment services should likewise reference the intended environment or build an equivalent isolated runtime from the same pins. Activation is convenient for people; explicit interpreter paths are more reliable for automation.

A compact per-project checklist

  • Which Python executable and version does this project require?
  • Was the environment created with that executable?
  • Is the environment directory associated with only this project?
  • Is Django pinned to the project’s supported release or release line?
  • Are all remaining dependencies installed from version-controlled files?
  • Does python -m django --version show the intended release?
  • Does sys.executable point inside the expected environment?
  • Are Django commands being run as python manage.py ... or through the environment’s explicit Python?
  • For an upgrade, was a new environment tested before switching away from the old one?

What this setup gives you

Once each project has its own interpreter-specific environment, changing Django for one application is a local package operation. The other application’s environment remains untouched. The durable practice is simple: select the runtime first, isolate per project, pin dependencies, verify the interpreter and rebuild from those pins whenever the environment changes.
