SFTP vs SSH: Features and Differences for Managing a Website

SSH is the broad secure remote-access protocol; SFTP is a file-transfer service that runs through SSH. Use SFTP when you only need to upload, download, rename, or edit website files. Use SSH when the job also requires shell commands, deployment scripts, logs, permissions, services, databases, packages, or other server administration. Both can use the same encrypted transport and authentication, but the account and server configuration determine whether a login is restricted to files or can control the wider server.

If you need SSH for broader website administration, Antihost VPS provides Linux VPS hosting with full root access and NVMe storage; it is self-managed and offered in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine.

The short answer: choose the narrowest tool that completes the job

For a file-only website task, SFTP is normally the better default. It gives a file-manager-style interface and can be configured as an SFTP-only account, limiting the user to a directory or chroot instead of exposing an interactive shell. When a task needs commands or server controls, SSH is required because it provides a shell or command channel in addition to other connection features.

Task Recommended connection Reason
Upload a theme, plugin, image, or static file SFTP File transfer is the only capability needed.
Create directories, rename files, or remove old releases SFTP These are file-management operations.
Run a build, migration, or deployment script SSH The server must execute commands.
Read logs or inspect running processes SSH Those are shell and server-administration functions.
Change ownership, permissions, or service configuration SSH They require command or administrative access.
Give a contractor access only to a website directory SFTP, configured as file-only It can reduce exposure compared with a general shell account.

This is a least-privilege recommendation, not a guarantee. An SFTP login can still write or delete anything its account permissions allow, and an SSH account can be tightly restricted by policy. Review the hosting provider’s account model before assuming what either credential can do.

What SSH provides

SSH, or Secure Shell, is a protocol for secure remote login and other network services over an untrusted network. RFC 4251 describes three layers:

  • Transport: server authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and optional compression.
  • User authentication: the process by which the server verifies the account holder, commonly with a password, public key, or another method allowed by policy.
  • Connection: logical channels carried inside the encrypted session.

RFC 4254 defines the connection protocol. It supports interactive login sessions, remote command execution, forwarded TCP/IP connections, and forwarded X11 connections. Multiple channels can be multiplexed through one encrypted tunnel, so a single SSH connection can carry a shell, a command, and forwarding sessions subject to server authorization.

OpenSSH is a widely used implementation suite rather than a different protocol. Its client-side tools include ssh, scp, and sftp. Server-side components include sshd and sftp-server, while ssh-agent, ssh-keygen, ssh-add, and ssh-keyscan support key creation, key handling, and host-key operations. OpenSSH also documents public-key authentication, agent forwarding, tunneling, and optional compression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an SSH website session can do

After authentication, an authorized account might receive an interactive shell:

ssh [email protected]

It can also run one command and disconnect:

ssh [email protected] 'cd /var/www/site && ./deploy.sh'

The command succeeds only if the account’s shell, filesystem permissions, and server policy permit it. SSH itself does not grant root access or any particular directory rights; those come from the operating system account, groups, sudo rules, containers, and hosting-provider controls.

What SFTP provides

SFTP means SSH File Transfer Protocol. In OpenSSH, the sftp client asks sshd to start the sftp-server subsystem. The Linux sftp manual describes it as an FTP-like file-transfer program that performs all operations over an encrypted SSH transport. It can use public-key authentication and compression.

SFTP is not ordinary FTP with encryption added, and it is not a shell command language. Its protocol carries file and directory requests such as listing, changing directories, creating directories, uploading, downloading, renaming, and deleting. A client can also run batch instructions, which makes repeatable transfers possible without opening an interactive shell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A server can configure an account for SFTP-only access. In that arrangement, the login starts the SFTP subsystem rather than a general shell, and the account may be confined to a particular directory or chroot. The restriction is a server-side policy: an SFTP client does not automatically make an unrestricted SSH account safe, and an SSH client cannot bypass a correctly enforced SFTP-only policy.

Typical SFTP session

sftp [email protected]

Inside the client, commands commonly include:

  • pwd and lpwd to show the remote and local working directories.
  • ls and lls to list remote and local files.
  • cd path and lcd path to change remote and local directories.
  • put filename to upload and get filename to download.
  • mkdir directory, rename old new, and rm filename for file management.
  • bye or exit to close the session.

Exact commands and graphical features vary by client. A client may offer synchronization, queues, or drag-and-drop transfers, but those are client features layered on the SFTP service rather than capabilities that turn SFTP into a shell.

How SFTP and SSH are related

SFTP normally connects to the same SSH service that handles an SSH login, then requests the SFTP subsystem. The transport negotiates the server’s host key and encryption, the user authenticates under the server’s rules, and the server starts the subsystem if that account is allowed to use it.

Because SFTP runs over SSH, the two commonly use the same configured service port. The port is not fixed by the SFTP protocol: an administrator can move the SSH service to a custom port, and SFTP clients must use that port. Ask the host for the hostname, port, username, authentication method, and initial directory instead of assuming a value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Encryption and authentication are shared at the transport layer when both services are provided by OpenSSH. What differs is the requested service and the resulting authorization scope. An SFTP request opens file-transfer channels; an SSH request may open a shell, execute commands, or create forwarding channels if policy permits.

Which one fits common website workflows?

Publishing or editing files

Choose SFTP when a designer or content editor needs to replace an image, upload a static build, edit a configuration file that the account is allowed to change, or create a directory. A graphical SFTP client can show local and remote trees, while the server can keep the account inside the site’s document root. There is no reason to expose shell commands when the work ends after the transfer.

Deploying an application

Choose SSH when deployment involves a script, dependency installation, asset compilation, database migration, cache invalidation, a process restart, or a release switch. A common sequence is to connect, inspect the current release, run the approved deployment command, and check its output. SFTP can copy the files used by that process, but it cannot execute the process itself.

ssh [email protected]
cd /var/www/site
./deploy.sh

The paths and script names above are examples; use the locations and commands supplied by the host or your deployment system. Do not run commands copied from an unknown source with an account that can modify production data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Logs, processes, and permissions

Reading service logs, checking a process list, changing ownership, adjusting mode bits, restarting a web server, or inspecting disk usage are SSH tasks. They require command execution and may require elevated privileges. SFTP can display directory contents and transfer files, but it is not a substitute for operating-system administration.

WordPress and similar content-management systems

For a routine plugin, theme, or media-file transfer, SFTP limits the connection to file operations. For maintenance that requires command-line tools, database exports, cache commands, or service diagnostics, use SSH only if the host and account explicitly provide it. A control-panel login, SFTP credential, and SSH credential may belong to different accounts with different roots and permissions; verify which one you received.

Security: making the choice safely

Use least privilege

Start by identifying the exact operation. If it is a file copy, grant SFTP access to only the necessary directory. If a deployment needs a command, provide SSH but restrict the account’s filesystem, sudo rights, and allowed commands as far as the hosting platform supports. The capability difference is why file-only access is generally the safer default, but a misconfigured writable directory can still damage a site.

Prefer public-key authentication where supported

OpenSSH supports public-key authentication. Keep the private key on a device you control, protect it with an appropriate passphrase, and add only the public key to the server or provider account. If a provider requires passwords, use a unique password and its available multi-factor controls. Never send a private key to a contractor or paste it into a ticket.

Verify the host key

On first connection, an SSH or SFTP client presents the server host key. Verify the fingerprint through a trusted provider channel before accepting it, then let the client remember the key. A changed fingerprint can indicate a legitimate server rebuild, but it can also indicate an interception attempt; stop and confirm rather than blindly accepting the replacement.

Understand forwarding and agent exposure

SSH can carry forwarded TCP/IP or X11 connections, and OpenSSH documents agent forwarding. These features are useful for administration but expand what a compromised account or host might reach. Disable forwarding unless the task requires it, and do not forward an agent to a server you do not trust. An SFTP-only account avoids these shell and forwarding channels when the server enforces the restriction.

Check chroot and provider policy

Ask whether the provider supports SFTP-only accounts, chroot directories, key authentication, custom ports, and separate users for production and staging. A chroot changes the visible filesystem root; it does not automatically fix Unix ownership or write permissions inside that tree. Confirm the account can reach the intended site directory and cannot reach unrelated customer data.

Step-by-step: upload a website with SFTP

  1. Collect connection details. Obtain the hostname, configured SSH/SFTP port, username, authentication method, and remote directory from the host. Confirm whether the account is SFTP-only.
  2. Prepare authentication. If keys are supported, create or use an existing key pair, protect the private key, and register only its public key. Keep a backup of the key in a secure password manager or other protected storage.
  3. Verify the host. Connect with the provider’s recommended client, compare the displayed host-key fingerprint with the trusted value, and accept it only after it matches.
  4. Open the session. A command-line connection has the form sftp -P PORT [email protected]. Replace PORT with the configured port; do not assume the service uses a standard value.
  5. Confirm both locations. Run pwd for the remote directory and lpwd for the local directory. Use cd and lcd until each points to the intended release folder.
  6. Inspect before changing. Run ls and compare the remote contents with the release you intend to publish. Download a backup of files you will overwrite when the hosting workflow permits it.
  7. Transfer deliberately. Use put file for an individual file or put -r directory for a directory when supported by the client. Upload to a staging or temporary directory first if the site cannot tolerate a partial release.
  8. Publish and check. Rename or move files only if the account and deployment procedure allow it. Verify the site’s pages, assets, permissions, and error logs through the host’s normal monitoring tools.
  9. Close the session. Run bye and remove temporary local copies of secrets or unneeded credentials.

For repeatable transfers, place approved SFTP commands in a batch file and invoke the client’s batch mode. Review the batch file for destructive commands before every production run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step: use SSH for a command-based deployment

  1. Confirm the scope. Write down the commands the deployment requires and verify that the account is authorized to run them. Request a separate deployment user rather than sharing a personal administrator login.
  2. Connect with the provider’s port and identity. Use ssh -p PORT [email protected] when a custom port is configured. Verify the host key before entering credentials.
  3. Check the target. Run pwd, inspect the release directory, and confirm the hostname or environment so a staging command cannot accidentally run in production.
  4. Transfer or retrieve code. Use the approved SFTP workflow, a deployment artifact, or another provider-supported method. Avoid downloading secrets into a developer workstation unless the procedure explicitly requires it.
  5. Run the deployment commands. Execute the documented build, migration, permission, or restart steps. Capture output and stop on the first error instead of continuing with a partially updated site.
  6. Validate. Check the service status, application logs, HTTP responses, background workers, and a representative page. Roll back using the provider’s documented release method if validation fails.
  7. Exit and audit. Close the SSH session, record what changed, and remove temporary files. Review authorized keys and account access when a contractor or short-term project ends.

Ports, credentials, and account boundaries

SFTP does not have to use a separate network service from SSH. In the usual OpenSSH arrangement, both reach sshd on the configured SSH port, and the client requests either a shell/command channel or the SFTP subsystem. A host may expose a different port, disable one service, or place SFTP behind a provider control panel, so the provider’s connection details take precedence.

Likewise, credentials are not interchangeable by definition. A key or password works only for the account and authentication methods that the server accepts. Two accounts on the same host can have different home directories, chroots, shell assignments, groups, and write permissions. Never infer that an SFTP user can open SSH, or that an SSH user is limited to website files.

SFTP versus SCP: an important OpenSSH change

OpenSSH release notes state that OpenSSH 9.0 changed scp to use SFTP by default instead of the legacy scp/rcp protocol. This matters for scripts that depend on legacy wildcard expansion or other historical scp behavior. Review such scripts, test them against the installed OpenSSH version, and use explicit options or a different transfer method when the old behavior is required. Calling a command scp does not guarantee that it uses the pre-9.0 protocol.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Authentication succeeds, but no shell appears

This is expected for an SFTP-only account. Use an SFTP client, or ask the provider for a shell-enabled SSH account if the task genuinely requires commands. Do not treat a missing shell as a transfer failure.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

SFTP connects but the website directory is missing

The account may start in a chroot or a different home directory. Run pwd, ask the host for the account’s document-root path, and confirm that the user has execute permission on each parent directory. Do not guess absolute paths from another account’s SSH session.

Permission denied while uploading or replacing a file

Check ownership, group membership, directory write permission, read-only deployment rules, and whether the provider has mounted the site as read-only. An SFTP client cannot grant itself permission. Ask the administrator to adjust the account or use the approved deployment process rather than changing broad permissions blindly.

SSH works but SFTP reports that the subsystem is unavailable

The server may not enable the SFTP subsystem for that account, may use a provider-specific implementation, or may have a configuration error. Contact the host and provide the exact client error, username, and connection port. Do not assume that installing a local SFTP client can fix a server-side policy.

A script behaves differently after an OpenSSH upgrade

Check whether it invokes scp and depends on legacy wildcard or remote-path handling. OpenSSH 9.0’s SFTP default can expose those assumptions. Test with non-production files, update the script deliberately, and document the required client version or options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Does the work end after copying or organizing files? Choose SFTP.
  • Must a process run on the server? Choose SSH.
  • Do you need logs, package tools, database commands, service restarts, or permission changes? Choose SSH with the minimum account privileges.
  • Are you giving access to someone who should never run commands? Request an SFTP-only account and directory restriction.
  • Is the port, host key, authentication method, or remote root unclear? Stop and confirm with the provider before connecting.
  • Will an automated script use scp? Check its behavior against the installed OpenSSH version, especially version 9.0 and later.

Bottom line

SFTP is the focused, file-only interface carried by SSH; SSH is the broader secure connection framework that can provide shells, commands, forwarding, and administration. For routine website uploads, SFTP usually gives the right capability with less exposure. For deployments and server operations, use SSH, restrict the account carefully, verify host keys, and follow the host’s documented port and authentication policy.
