WooCommerce is connected to WordPress core, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, your theme, extensions, payment gateways, scheduled actions, and hosting configuration. An update can therefore expose a conflict even when the WooCommerce plugin itself is functioning correctly. A checkout failure may come from a gateway extension, a theme override, a shipping integration, a PHP change, or a database migration that did not finish.
WooCommerce stores customer and store-critical information in two places. The database holds products, orders, posts, pages, and settings. The wp-content directory holds themes, extensions, media uploads, and other custom files. A backup that contains only one of these is incomplete: restoring only the database can leave missing code or images, while restoring only files can leave orders and settings at the wrong state.

The safe objective is not merely “the plugin updated.” It is a tested, recoverable deployment in which customers can browse, pay, receive order mail, and trigger every important extension workflow.
Before you touch production: build an inventory
Record the current state of the store before changing anything. Save the version number and note whether each item is managed by WooCommerce, your host, or a third-party developer.

Read the WooCommerce release notes and each extension’s release notes. Check the “Tested up to WooCommerce version” field where it is available. If a gateway or extension does not state compatibility, ask its developer before scheduling production work; do not infer compatibility from its age or from another plugin’s success.
Confirm the platform baseline
Compare the recorded environment with WooCommerce’s current requirements. PHP 8.3 or greater and MySQL 8.0 or greater, or MariaDB 10.6 or greater, are the recommended baselines for optimal performance and security. These are recommendations, not permission to change the server during the same untested deployment. If the host is below the baseline, plan that runtime or database upgrade as a separate, tested change unless the exact combination has already passed staging.
Make a backup that can actually restore the store
Take a fresh backup immediately before the production update. It must include both the complete WordPress database and the complete wp-content directory, including uploads, themes, plugins, and custom files. Keep a recoverable copy away from the web server where practical so a server failure or compromised account does not destroy the only copy.
What the backup must contain
- A database export containing products, orders, customers, posts, pages, settings, and WooCommerce data.
- The entire
wp-contentdirectory, not only the active theme or the WooCommerce folder. - Any host-level configuration or environment data needed to reproduce the site, such as PHP settings and scheduled-task configuration, when your platform supports exporting it.
- A timestamp and a note identifying the WooCommerce, WordPress, PHP, and database versions at the time of capture.
Verify before updating
A backup file that was never tested is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Verify that the database archive opens and that the files can be read. The strongest check is a restoration to a separate staging location: import the database, copy wp-content, connect the site, and confirm that products, orders, media, and the administration area load. If a full restoration test is not immediately possible, at minimum inspect archive integrity and confirm that the backup job reports success for both database and files.

Do not start the update while a backup job is still running. Record where the backup is stored and who can restore it. A current backup is the prerequisite for running a WooCommerce database update and for any rollback.
Use staging to test the exact release
Staging is a copy of production isolated from customers. Clone the current database and wp-content, protect the clone from indexing and outgoing customer mail, and use test credentials or sandbox payment accounts. WooCommerce advises testing updates on staging rather than directly on production.
Clone and refresh the test environment
- Create a staging site from a recent production backup, preserving the same WordPress, PHP, database, theme, extensions, gateway configuration, and scheduled-action setup.
- Prevent accidental live effects: disable indexing, route email to a test mailbox, and put payment gateways in sandbox or test mode.
- Write down the exact versions on staging before updating so a failure can be reproduced.
- Update WooCommerce first, then the compatible extensions, payment gateways, and theme as one deliberate set. Do not silently add unrelated major changes.
Exercise real customer journeys
Use test products that represent the store’s actual catalog. Check a simple product, a variable product, a downloadable or virtual product if used, coupons, inventory reduction, and any subscriptions or memberships the store relies on. Walk through the complete path:
- Open the storefront and several product pages.
- Add products to the cart, change quantities, remove an item, and apply a coupon.
- Calculate shipping and taxes for representative customer addresses.
- Complete a low-risk test payment through each important gateway, including any redirect, 3-D Secure, webhook, refund, or capture flow used by the business.
- Confirm that the order receives the correct status, stock is reduced correctly, and customer and administrator emails are generated.
- Run extension-specific workflows such as bookings, memberships, subscriptions, product feeds, invoices, fulfillment exports, or marketplace synchronization when applicable.
- Inspect WooCommerce scheduled actions for failures and review PHP, web-server, and extension logs.
Record the result, not just the fact that staging “looks fine.” A pass should identify the tested gateway, shipping and tax cases, email destination, and extension workflows. If compatibility remains unclear, obtain guidance from the extension developer before promoting the set.

Choose a low-traffic period that still gives you time to monitor the store and contact support. Tell staff not to edit products or process orders during the deployment. Have administrator access, hosting access, the backup location, and a tested staging copy available before beginning.
Enable Coming soon or maintenance mode before changing files or running migrations. This prevents a customer from reaching checkout while the database and code are temporarily out of sync. Confirm that administrators can still sign in and that the maintenance page does not bypass checkout through a cached page. Purge or pause page and object caches only according to your host’s documented procedure.

Avoid bundling several unrelated major releases into one untested event. Updating WordPress, PHP, the database server, the theme, WooCommerce, and multiple gateways together makes both diagnosis and rollback harder. If staging tested the complete combination, document that fact; otherwise separate the changes.
Update WooCommerce and complete its database work
Take the final backup and confirm its timestamp. Then perform the update from the WordPress administration area.
- Open Plugins > Installed Plugins, locate WooCommerce, and choose its update link, or use Dashboard > Updates.
- Wait for WordPress to report completion. Do not refresh, navigate away, close the browser, or start another update while the files are being replaced.
- Reload the administration area only after the update has finished and read every notice.
- If WooCommerce displays an Update WooCommerce Database notice, verify that the current backup exists before selecting the update action.
- Start the database update and keep the maintenance window open. Monitor progress in WooCommerce > Status > Scheduled Actions and wait for the migration to complete.
- Investigate failed or pending actions before proceeding. A migration that is interrupted, repeatedly failing, or still running is not a completed update.
The database notice is a required migration step, not an optional cleanup message. New plugin files can expect tables or data formats that the old schema does not provide. Never run the migration without a current, restorable backup.
Update extensions, themes, and gateways as a tested set
After core WooCommerce is stable, update the surrounding software that passed staging. Marketplace extensions can be reviewed through WooCommerce > Extensions > My subscriptions. For third-party extensions and gateways, use the developer’s release notes and compatibility guidance.
Order the work deliberately
- Confirm the WooCommerce version and database migration are complete.
- Update extensions that explicitly support that WooCommerce version.
- Update payment gateways and verify their account mode, webhooks, callback URLs, and secret keys were not overwritten.
- Update the theme or child theme only if the staged version includes its WooCommerce template changes.
- Clear the appropriate caches, then check the site after each logical group rather than applying an untracked batch.
If an extension has no compatibility statement, leave it unchanged until its developer confirms support or until you can test it separately. An extension that is not updated may be safer than an extension updated without evidence, provided it remains compatible with the new WooCommerce version.
Verify the store before reopening checkout
Do not disable maintenance mode because the WordPress dashboard appears normal. Perform the following production checks with a low-value or sandbox transaction appropriate to the gateway.

- Open the home page, shop page, category pages, and several product pages in a private browser window.
- Add an item to the cart, change quantity, remove it, and proceed through checkout.
- Verify shipping methods, tax calculation, currency, coupons, required fields, and address validation.
- Complete a payment or authorized test transaction and confirm the expected order status.
- Check that inventory changed once, not twice and not at all.
- Confirm customer and administrator emails, including order-processing, completed, failed, refund, and any fulfillment messages the store uses.
- Check gateway dashboards or webhook logs for duplicate, missing, or delayed callbacks.
- Review WooCommerce > Status > Scheduled Actions, WordPress admin notices, PHP errors, and extension alerts.
- Test logged-in and guest checkout, mobile layout, and any language, currency, subscription, membership, booking, or download flow that matters to the business.
Only after these checks pass should you disable Coming soon or maintenance mode. Keep monitoring orders, scheduled actions, and error logs after reopening; a delayed webhook or background action may fail after the first successful checkout.
If the update breaks something
Keep checkout closed while diagnosing. Preserve logs and note the time, versions, failed URL, order status, and exact error. Do not repeatedly click update or activate random plugins on production; each change can overwrite evidence.
Isolate a plugin or theme conflict
First confirm that all plugins and the theme are on versions compatible with the new WooCommerce release. Then reproduce the issue on staging. WooCommerce’s conflict-testing guidance recommends switching temporarily to a default WordPress theme and testing plugins until the conflicting component is identified.
- Restore staging to the pre-update snapshot so you can reproduce the original behavior.
- Switch to a default theme while preserving the child-theme files for later comparison.
- Disable nonessential plugins, then reactivate them one at a time while repeating the failing journey.
- When the failure returns, compare the conflicting extension’s release notes and contact its developer with the logs and version matrix.
- Apply the confirmed fix on staging, repeat the complete checkout and email tests, and only then deploy the fix to production.
Testing is the reliable way to determine a conflict; a dashboard that loads is not proof that checkout, webhooks, or scheduled actions work.

When to restore
Restore when customers cannot safely check out, orders are being created incorrectly, data is corrupted, or the cause cannot be isolated within the maintenance window. Restore both the database and wp-content from the same known-good point, then validate the storefront and a test order before reopening.
How to roll back without creating a second failure
A rollback is not a simple replacement of WooCommerce plugin files. If the newer release changed the database schema, older files may read the database incorrectly or leave data inconsistencies. WooCommerce warns that reverting to an older version can cause this problem.

- Identify the exact pre-update WooCommerce, WordPress, PHP, database, theme, extension, and gateway versions.
- On staging, restore the database backup and
wp-contentbackup that belong to that same point in time. - Confirm that the restored site can browse, calculate totals, place a test order, send mail, and run scheduled actions.
- Only after staging succeeds, restore the matching database and files to production using your host’s documented procedure.
- Recheck the storefront and checkout, then keep maintenance mode enabled until the rollback is verified.
If you have only a database backup or only plugin files, do not assume a safe rollback. Pause and obtain qualified hosting or WooCommerce developer help; a partial downgrade can be worse than leaving the site on the newer version while you investigate.
Choosing who should perform updates
Manual, managed-host, and agency-led updates can all be safe when they meet the same operational requirements. Compare the service or process against these criteria rather than against a promise of “one-click” updates.

A practical go/no-go checklist
- All component versions and release notes are recorded.
- PHP is 8.3 or greater, and the database is MySQL 8.0 or greater or MariaDB 10.6 or greater, or a documented exception has passed staging.
- A fresh backup includes the database and
wp-content. - The backup was verified or restored to staging.
- The exact WooCommerce, extension, theme, gateway, WordPress, PHP, and database combination passed staging.
- Sandbox or test payment credentials and test email routing are ready.
- Maintenance mode and a low-risk window are scheduled.
- The database migration notice, if shown, will be run only after the backup check.
- Checkout, scheduled actions, logs, and gateway callbacks will be monitored after deployment.
- A matching rollback point and the person authorized to restore it are identified.
If any critical item is missing, postpone the production update. The cost of waiting for compatibility information or a tested backup is lower than debugging a live checkout failure with no reliable restore point.
