Why is 7 Days to Die stuck in the dying state when I join a server? Usually, the game has reached a multiplayer join or authentication failure rather than a permanent character-death state. The practical fix is to check the server and client branch first, then align mods, world files, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) and crossplay settings, synchronize the device clock, retry through the correct join method, and finally repair the installation or network.

There is no single confirmed universal fix. Use the sequence below in order; it separates peer-to-peer, dedicated-server, PC, and console causes so you do not delete saves or change router settings unnecessarily.

What the “dying” screen means
When a join never finishes and the character remains on a dying screen, the failure is normally in the connection, authentication, world hand-off, or player-spawn stage. The screen itself does not identify the cause. A player can see the same symptom when the server is on a different build, a mod or custom world is missing, EoS authentication rejects a token, EAC or crossplay requirements are not met, a VPN or firewall interrupts traffic, or a platform service is having an incident.
First note when the screen appears. That timing determines which checks have the highest chance of solving it.

If every player is affected, investigate the host, server branch, ports, or a platform incident. If only one player is affected, concentrate on that player’s clock, files, mods, EAC installation, VPN, and local security software.
Why is 7 Days to Die stuck on the dying screen when joining my friend?
Use this order rather than changing several variables at once. After each step, try the same join again and record what changed.
- Ask the host for the exact build and branch. “Updated” is not enough: both sides must run the same game version and, where applicable, the same beta or stable branch.
- Make the content identical. Temporarily remove client mods, or install exactly the same mod files and versions as the server. Confirm that a custom world or required world file exists on the joining computer.
- Confirm EAC and crossplay settings. Crossplay sessions must meet the game’s EAC requirement. A client launched with EAC disabled may be unable to enter a server that requires it.
- Synchronize the device clock. Set the operating system to obtain time automatically and force a time sync before launching the game.
- Use the appropriate join route. For a friend found through server search, open the peer2peer tab when it is available and search by SteamID. Remove overly restrictive browser filters.
- Test without a VPN. Disconnect it briefly and retry. A VPN can change the route, NAT behavior, or addresses used for the session.
- If the host runs a dedicated server, check ports. Confirm the listed TCP and UDP ports are allowed through the host firewall and forwarded to the server computer.
- Repair the PC installation safely. Back up saves first, verify files in Steam, then remove only the residual data described below.
- Check for a platform or service outage. A hotfix or account/network incident can imitate a local dying-state bug.
- Escalate with evidence. If the branch, content, clock, network, and files are correct, collect logs and screenshots for official support.
1. Match the game version and branch
The client and server must be on the same build. A server that has just updated can reject a client that is still on an older stable build; the reverse can also happen when a client opted into a test branch and the server did not.
Client checklist
- Read the version shown in the game’s main menu or launcher.
- Open the game’s Steam properties and inspect the Betas or branch selector.
- Choose the branch the host is actually running, then allow the download to finish before launching.
- Ask every player to restart Steam after changing branches so the same executable and content are loaded.
Dedicated-server branch incident
During a 3.1.0 connection incident, Fun Pimps staff member Hank7DTD instructed dedicated-server players to select Default Public Version
, identified in that notice as the v3.1.0 stable branch. That instruction applied to the incident; it does not mean every future server should use v3.1.0. Match the branch named by the current server operator.

If the host cannot state the branch, have the host stop the server, note its selected branch, update or roll back deliberately, and tell all players exactly what to select. Do not keep reinstalling a client while the server remains on an unknown build.
2. Make mods, custom worlds, EAC, and crossplay agree
Mods
Disable all client-side mods for one test join. If the unmodded client connects, re-enable mods in small groups until the incompatible file is identified. For a modded server, compare the complete mod list, versions, dependency files, and folder structure on both sides. A matching mod name is not sufficient if one player has an older archive or an extra dependency.
Custom worlds and generated data
A server may require a custom world or generated-world data that the joining client does not have. Confirm the required files are present and that the host has not regenerated the world between attempts. Do not overwrite a working local world without a backup; copy it to a separate location first.
EAC and crossplay
Use the launch option that enables EAC when the server or crossplay session requires it. If one player starts with EAC disabled while the server enforces EAC, authentication can fail before the world loads. Conversely, a server configured for a mode that does not support a particular crossplay route may not appear or may fail during join. Verify the host’s crossplay setting and use the corresponding client path instead of repeatedly selecting a different browser entry.
3. Synchronize the device clock for EoS authentication
Epic Online Services (EoS) authentication uses time-sensitive tokens. A clock that is several minutes off can make a valid return token look expired or not yet valid to the server. This is especially easy to miss after a battery failure, dual-boot session, manual time change, or offline period.

Community moderator Umbionis described the remedy plainly: The fix is to ensure that the clock on your device is 100% synced with internet time.
The explanation is that EoS can reject a return authentication token when the client timestamp does not match the server request.
Windows time-sync procedure
- Close the game and Steam.
- Open Settings → Time & language → Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically if those options are correct for your location.
- Select Sync now, wait for the confirmation, and restart Steam.
- Launch the game and attempt the same server join.
Some Microsoft devices cannot complete an online correction while offline or when the time service is stalled. In that case, connect to the internet, correct the time manually as a temporary measure, then run the automatic sync again. Check the clock on every device in the session, not just the host.
4. Retry through the right join path
Peer-to-peer friend sessions
When joining a friend through the server browser, select the peer2peer tab if it is offered and search by the friend’s SteamID. This can bypass a stale or incomplete public-server listing. Remove filters for region, player count, password, or ping during the test; an over-filtered browser can hide the correct session or leave you joining an outdated listing.
Have the host start the world fully, remain in the game, and invite or expose the session only after the world is ready. If the host closes the world between attempts, the client may keep trying to authenticate against a session that no longer exists.

Disconnect a VPN for one controlled test. If the join works without it, the VPN route, NAT type, DNS handling, or UDP policy is the likely difference. Do not treat a VPN as a permanent fix for a server that has incorrect ports or incompatible content; fix the underlying configuration first.

5. Dedicated-server ports and firewall rules
The Fun Pimps community support FAQ (2025) lists these dedicated-server ports and functions:

Port-check procedure for the host
- Give the server computer a reserved local IP address in the router, so forwarding does not point to a different device after a reboot.
- Create firewall rules for TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26903, targeting the server executable or the documented server process.
- Forward the same external ports to the reserved internal IP. Keep protocol types separate.
- Restart the server, then have a player outside the host’s home network test the join.
- If the outside test fails but local players connect, investigate the router’s NAT loopback behavior rather than changing game files.
A managed dedicated-server provider can reduce port-forwarding and always-online maintenance, but it cannot correct a client’s stale files, an unsynchronized clock, incompatible mods, EAC settings, or a platform outage. Port forwarding is also irrelevant to a purely peer-to-peer session unless the host’s NAT is preventing the peer connection.

File cleanup is a later step because deleting data before checking the branch and content can destroy useful evidence. Back up saves and world data first.
Back up the important folders
- Copy the
Savesfolder to a location outside the game directory. - Copy
GeneratedWorldsas well if you use generated or custom worlds. - Keep the backup disconnected from the cleanup location until the game launches successfully.
Verify Steam files
- In Steam, open the Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and test an unmodded join.
Remove residual files and mods
The official troubleshooting article recommends removing residual files from the game installation and from %appdata%7DaysToDie, while retaining Saves and GeneratedWorlds. Remove mod files during this test. If you are uncertain which files are safe, rename the folder rather than deleting it, preserve the two named folders, and keep the renamed copy as a rollback.
Reinstall and use the launcher cleanup tool
If verification does not help, uninstall and reinstall the current stable build. After reinstalling, open the game’s launcher and use its Tools tab to clean old data, then launch once without mods. Restore backed-up saves only after confirming that a new test world can load and that a clean server join works.

Antivirus exclusions
The official guidance also recommends exclusions for the Steam game folder and %appdata%7DaysToDie. Add exclusions only in security software you trust, keep real-time protection enabled elsewhere, and remove a temporary exclusion if it does not change the result. A security product that blocks the game or EAC can produce a join failure that looks like corrupted files.
7. Platform-specific checks
PC
PC players can perform the full branch, file-verification, mod, clock, VPN, and firewall sequence. Compare whether another PC player can enter the same server: if they can, the server is less likely to be the immediate fault and the affected PC should be tested with a clean profile and no mods.

Console
Preserve saves before deleting game data. Check the console platform’s service status and the game’s official announcements before attempting a factory reset or world deletion. Console players cannot apply PC file-verification or launcher-tool steps, so platform authentication and server incidents deserve earlier attention.
A 2026 Fun Pimps support discussion mentioned a 1 GB console game-data limit while addressing a specific incident. Treat that figure as incident-specific support guidance, not as a universal performance guarantee or a reason to delete data automatically.
Platform incidents and hotfixes
A 2026 Xbox incident discussed in the Fun Pimps forum was attributed to an update combined with Xbox server and network problems. The issue was later resolved through a hotfix and restored networks. If many players report the same failure immediately after an update, wait for the platform and game status to recover before making destructive local changes.
8. Choose the next branch by host type and symptoms

9. When the join still never finishes
Stop changing settings randomly and make one controlled test. Write down the client build, server build and branch, platform, host type, mod status, EAC/crossplay setting, clock-sync result, VPN status, and the exact point at which the screen loops. Ask the host whether other players can join and whether the server log reports an authentication, world, or network error.

- A screenshot or short recording of the dying-state loop.
- Game and server version numbers and selected branch.
- Platform and whether the session is peer-to-peer or dedicated.
- The mod list and custom-world name, if applicable.
- Whether EAC and crossplay are enabled.
- Approximate time of the failed attempt and time-zone information.
- Relevant game, launcher, and dedicated-server logs.
- Confirmation that saves were backed up before cleanup.
This information lets support distinguish a reproducible build or authentication defect from a local firewall, content, or clock problem. Do not post account tokens, private IP addresses, or unredacted personal information with the logs.
