To save Barcus Wroot at the Blighted Village windmill in Act One, deal with the goblins, enter the mill, and pull the Brake lever. Then speak to Barcus and untie him. Do not pull Release Brake: it speeds up the windmill and throws him to his death. His pack is in the cellar beneath the mill, and you can still retrieve it if he was not saved.
How to stop the windmill and free Barcus
- Approach the windmill in the Blighted Village. This starts the Rescue the Gnome quest and brings you into contact with Fezzerk and the goblins. You can resolve the encounter through dialogue or combat. Approaching through a breach in a wall can make the group hostile without the opening conversation. Location reference; quest reference.
- Enter the windmill after the goblins have left or been defeated. Inside, find the two levers.
- Pull the lever labeled Brake. This safely stops the mill. Do not choose Release Brake; that makes the windmill spin faster and launches Barcus into the air, killing him. If this happens, his corpse can be found on the western road out of the village. Location reference; quest reference.
- Interact with Barcus and untie him. Stopping the mill does not free him by itself; you must untie him after the blades stop. Quest reference.
Where to find Barcus’s pack
Look for a wooden hatch near the windmill and use it to enter the cellar. The location reference places the hatch at X: -11, Y: 436. Barcus’s pack is inside; it contains Camp Supplies and a Smokepowder Satchel. Location reference.
A nearby heavy chest is separate from the pack and contains gold and The Speedy Lightfeet. Location reference.
Can you get the pack if Barcus dies or is missed?
Yes. Rescuing Barcus is not required to obtain his luggage: the pack remains in the windmill cellar. The lever choice affects Barcus’s fate, not whether the cellar loot can be collected. Quest reference.
