During Taking French Leave, Hans is held in Maleshov’s central tower. Rosa’s book, A Book of Humorous Anecdotes, is in Lady Ofka’s second-floor room, beside the window. Pick it up before you leave the fortress, then finish the escape with Hans and Vauquelin Brabant. After the quest, return the book to Rosa at Ruthard Palace in Kuttenberg if you want to pursue her writing scene.
Make sure you are on the Maleshov rescue quest
This is the Maleshov section of the main quest Taking French Leave in the Kuttenberg region. It is separate from the earlier events involving Hans at Trosky Castle. Check your active journal objective before following a map marker, since Hans’s location changes during the campaign.

If you want Rosa’s book, accept her request before entering Maleshov. The secret passage route relies on the chapel and stone-cross clues, and you need a spade to dig at the marked point. Guides recommend saving before committing to the infiltration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to rescue Hans and collect Rosa’s book
- Enter Maleshov through the secret passage. Follow the objective for Taking French Leave and use the chapel-and-cross clues to reach the passage.
- Reach the central tower. Guides describe several ways to get access, including acquiring keys from Cook Drahomira, dialogue, stealth, or lockpicking. The approach can vary; no single tactic is mandatory.
- Search Lady Ofka’s second-floor room. Find A Book of Humorous Anecdotes beside the window and take it before leaving the fortress. The room is close to the route to Hans.
- Continue to the top floor. Speak with Hans and Vauquelin Brabant, then carry on with the escape objective.
- Get both prisoners out. Escort them toward the horses or stables and complete the escape. Finding Hans alone does not finish the rescue.
Choose an access approach that suits your character
The walkthroughs describe multiple ways through the tower, rather than one required solution. Use the approach that best fits your skills and tolerance for risk:
#1 Best Overall
| Approach | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Stealth or waiting for guard movement | Can help avoid detection, but depends on timing and staying out of sight. |
| Acquire keys | Guides describe obtaining keys from Cook Drahomira; the route may involve stealth or dialogue. |
| Dialogue with an occupant | Some routes describe speaking with a room occupant, including Lady Ofka. This is an alternative, not a universal requirement. |
| Lockpicking | Can provide another way through locked access; it depends on your lockpicking ability. |
Guides also describe different ways to handle Lady Ofka, including dialogue or stealth. Do not treat knocking someone out or committing a crime as necessary to reach the book or rescue Hans.
Can you return for Rosa’s book after rescuing Hans?
Do not count on going back. Walkthroughs identify the book as time-sensitive and advise collecting it during the Maleshov infiltration, before exiting the fortress. If Rosa’s request is active, pick the book up while you are already in her room.

Where to give the book to Rosa
After completing the rescue quest, return to Rosa at Ruthard Palace in Kuttenberg and give her A Book of Humorous Anecdotes. If you want the optional writing scene, do this promptly: guide sources warn that progressing into the next urgent council and main-story sequence can move Rosa and make the scene unavailable. This reported outcome is not confirmed for a specific game patch.
