Save a Twitch broadcast before its retention deadline: enable Store Past Broadcasts before you stream, then download each video from Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer or export it to a connected YouTube account. Twitch says expired or unsaved VODs are removed from its servers and cannot be recovered by Support, so preservation has to happen while the video is still listed.

How long Twitch keeps a VOD

Twitch applies different retention windows according to the broadcaster’s account status. The current Twitch Help On-Demand Content guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these periods for ordinary past broadcasts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Broadcaster status Standard past-broadcast retention What to do
Partners, Prime users, and Twitch Turbo users 60 days Download or export during the 60-day window.
Affiliates 14 days Plan an archive soon after each stream.
All other broadcasters 7 days Preserve the recording within the first week.

These are Twitch’s stated platform rules, not guarantees about another service’s storage. The countdown concerns the past broadcast in Twitch’s on-demand library. If a video is important, do not wait until the final day: processing can take time, a download can fail, and a short retention period leaves little room to troubleshoot.

The safest interpretation is to plan against the shortest deadline that applies to the copy you need. A Partner may have 60 days for the ordinary horizontal VOD, but only seven days for a vertical or 2K variant. An Affiliate has 14 days for the ordinary VOD, while a broadcaster in the general category has seven. Write down the stream date, your account category, and the format you want to preserve so the deadline is not a guess.

Special VOD formats can disappear sooner

Dual-format streams

When a stream produces both horizontal and vertical versions, Twitch says the vertical version expires after seven days. The horizontal version remains for the rest of the ordinary retention period associated with the account. A Partner’s horizontal recording may therefore remain for the remainder of its 60-day period even though its vertical counterpart is already gone.

If you publish short-form content from the vertical file, download or export that version first. Waiting for the horizontal copy to remain does not preserve the vertical presentation, framing, or resolution after the seven-day cutoff.

2K streams

For a 2K VOD, Twitch’s guidance says the 2K version expires after seven days. The 1080p version remains for the rest of the applicable standard window. If you want the higher-resolution file, treat seven days as the deadline rather than assuming the lower-resolution copy is an equivalent substitute.

The seven-day rule for a vertical or 2K variant is separate from the account-based retention period. Check which version you need before choosing when to archive. If you want both versions, handle the short-window file first and then preserve the horizontal or 1080p copy.

Enable VOD storage before you go live

Twitch says Store Past Broadcasts is off by default. With it disabled, the stream is not saved as a past broadcast, and you cannot create Highlights or Clips from that VOD. Turn the setting on before starting the next broadcast; enabling it after the stream cannot recreate a recording that was never stored.

  1. Sign in to Twitch and open the Creator Dashboard.
  2. Open Settings, then Stream (often shown as Stream Settings in Twitch’s documentation).
  3. Find Store Past Broadcasts and switch it on.
  4. Save or confirm the setting if Twitch presents a confirmation control.
  5. Before going live, return to the setting and verify that it is still enabled.

Storage being enabled does not make every recording immune to failure. Twitch notes that incompatible configuration or network instability can prevent a broadcast from being saved. After an important stream, check Video Producer rather than assuming the VOD exists.

Make this a pre-stream checklist item, not something you do while preparing an archive. A setting change made after a broadcast cannot recover missing footage. If several people manage a channel, make sure everyone follows the same check so one overlooked toggle does not create an unrecoverable gap.

Download a VOD to your computer

Downloading creates a local copy that you control, provided you put it somewhere you can access and back up. Twitch’s native workflow handles one video at a time.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Open Creator Dashboard.
  2. Under Content, select Video Producer.
  3. Locate the past broadcast. Use the list’s filter or sort controls if you have many videos.
  4. Open the three-dot menu beside the video and choose Download.
  5. Wait for Twitch to prepare the file and for your browser’s download to finish. Twitch cautions that a long video may take time before downloading begins.
  6. Open the resulting file and check that it plays from beginning to end. Confirm that the audio and resolution are what you expected.
  7. Move the verified file to a durable storage location, such as a computer folder plus an external drive or another backup destination.

A download is still subject to what Twitch has processed. If Twitch’s Audio Recognition system muted part of the VOD, downloading it does not create an unmuted copy; the downloaded file retains that muted state.

Keep the browser download location organized. A descriptive filename containing the channel, stream date, and format makes later retrieval easier, especially when several versions of the same broadcast appear in Video Producer. Do not delete the Twitch listing until you have opened the local file and confirmed that the transfer completed.

Export a VOD directly to YouTube

Exporting is Twitch’s second native preservation route. It sends one selected VOD to a connected YouTube account, so you do not first have to save the file locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Twitch, open the account Connections page.
  2. Connect the Twitch account to the intended YouTube account and complete the authorization prompts.
  3. Return to Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer.
  4. Open the three-dot menu for the VOD and choose Export.
  5. Select the connected YouTube destination and start the export.
  6. Check YouTube after processing completes. Confirm that the video is present, playable, and using the visibility and title you intended.

Twitch says YouTube verification is required for uploads longer than YouTube’s 15-minute limit. That 15-minute figure is the upload requirement Twitch references; it is not a promise about how quickly an export will finish. Large videos can take substantial time to upload and process, so begin well before the Twitch retention deadline.

Exporting is not a bulk archive tool. Select each VOD individually, and verify each destination video rather than assuming a successful start means the entire recording is available on YouTube. Account access, processing, and visibility remain responsibilities of the connected destination.

Download or export: which preservation path fits?

Consideration Download from Video Producer Export to YouTube
Result An individual video file saved to a local device. An individual video sent to a connected YouTube account.
Storage responsibility You choose the folder, drive, and backup plan. You rely on the connected account and its upload and processing rules.
Internet and disk needs Requires enough local free space and a completed download. Avoids the local download step but requires an account connection and an upload.
Verification Play the file locally and keep an additional copy if it matters. Check that YouTube received and processed the video and that you can retrieve it.
Bulk operation Twitch provides no bulk-download control; select videos individually. Exports are also initiated for individual videos.

Choose a local download when you need the original file under your own storage policy or want an archive that is not dependent on a social-video account. Choose export when a hosted copy is more convenient and your YouTube account is already prepared. Either route should be verified; starting an action is not the same as possessing a usable archive.

Some creators use both paths for especially valuable broadcasts: download the file, then export or upload a second copy. That is an operational choice rather than a Twitch requirement, but it reduces dependence on one device or one account. Whichever method you choose, make sure you can still open the archive after the Twitch VOD is no longer listed.

Use a reliable archive routine after every stream

Immediately after the broadcast

  • Open Video Producer and confirm that the new VOD appears.
  • Note the account status and the applicable 60-day, 14-day, or 7-day deadline.
  • If the stream has vertical and horizontal versions, identify which one Twitch marks as expiring after seven days.
  • If the stream was 2K, prioritize the 2K file before its seven-day window closes.

Before starting the transfer

  • Check free disk space if downloading. A long stream can require a large local file.
  • Confirm that the destination account is the correct YouTube account if exporting.
  • For a YouTube upload longer than 15 minutes, complete the verification Twitch requires.
  • Use a stable connection and avoid scheduling the transfer at the last possible moment.

After the transfer

  • Play the beginning, a middle section, and the end of a downloaded file or exported video.
  • Check for expected audio, especially if Twitch’s Audio Recognition system may have muted material.
  • Keep at least one additional copy for recordings that cannot be recreated.
  • Record the filename or archive location so you can find the video after removing it from Twitch.

An external hard drive is one possible destination for downloaded files. Twitch does not specify a required drive type, model, capacity, or performance level, so select storage based on the size of your recordings and your own backup needs.

What happens to Clips?

Clips are not simply interchangeable with full VODs. Twitch’s dual-format guidance says that clips created from dual-format streams are available in both vertical and horizontal formats and do not expire. That statement is specific to the dual-format clip guidance. It should not be expanded into a universal promise that every clip, regardless of how it was created or how Twitch’s product rules change, will remain available forever.

If a clip is important, preserve it yourself while it plays correctly. Open the clip from its Twitch page and use the available sharing or saving workflow appropriate to your account and device, while respecting the rights in the recorded material. Keep a copy of the underlying full VOD as well when possible: a clip is a short excerpt, not a replacement for the complete broadcast.

Do not confuse a clip with a Highlight. Highlights are created from a stored VOD, so disabling Store Past Broadcasts removes the ability to create them from that unsaved broadcast. Twitch’s on-demand documentation lists Clips as an on-demand content type, but the general page does not establish one universal expiration rule for every clip circumstance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For dual-format clips, check both presentations if you intend to reuse them. Twitch says both vertical and horizontal versions are available, but a clip page is still not the same as a downloadable, independently managed archive. Save the version you actually plan to edit or publish elsewhere.

Can Twitch recover an expired or unsaved VOD?

No. Twitch says that once a VOD expires, or when a broadcast was never saved because storage was disabled or the configuration was incompatible, the content no longer exists on Twitch’s servers. Twitch Support cannot recover it. Network instability can also result in a stream failing to save, which is why checking Video Producer and making an independent copy matters.

Contacting Support after the deadline is therefore not an archive strategy. If the VOD is still listed, act immediately; if it is gone, Twitch’s stated recovery limit means there is no official restoration path.

This limit also applies when the missing recording was expected to be available because a setting was changed too late. An archive plan must start before the stream and be completed while Twitch still presents the video. Screenshots of a listing or a clip link do not recreate the underlying VOD after removal.

Troubleshooting common preservation failures

The VOD is missing after the stream

  • Check that Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before going live.
  • Look in Video Producer filters and confirm you are viewing the correct channel and date.
  • Allow time for Twitch to finish processing a long broadcast.
  • Consider whether an incompatible configuration or network instability prevented storage.

If the broadcast was never stored, Twitch says it cannot be recovered from its servers.

The download button does not start quickly

Twitch warns that long videos may take time before the download begins. Keep the Video Producer page open, avoid cancelling the request prematurely, and make sure the browser and destination device have enough available space. If the transfer eventually fails, retry while the VOD remains inside its retention period rather than waiting for the final day.

The downloaded file contains muted audio

Audio Recognition muting is applied to the VOD Twitch provides. Twitch states that downloading does not produce an unmuted copy. Treat the downloaded file as an archive of the version Twitch made available, not as a way to reverse the mute.

YouTube export is unavailable or incomplete

  • Return to Connections and verify that the intended YouTube account is connected.
  • Complete YouTube verification if the video is longer than 15 minutes, as Twitch requires for that case.
  • Check the destination account for processing status rather than assuming an upload finished when the export was initiated.
  • If the export path continues to fail, use the Video Producer download while the VOD is still available.

You need to archive many VODs

Twitch does not provide a bulk-download feature in the documented workflow. Its help page mentions third-party tools for bulk downloading but does not endorse a particular tool. Any such software is outside Twitch’s native support, so verify its security, permissions, account implications, and compliance with Twitch’s current terms before using it. The official fallback is to download or export videos one at a time.

Plan around the shortest deadline

For Affiliates and other broadcasters, the 14-day and seven-day windows can pass quickly. A practical schedule is to start the archive as soon as the VOD appears, then repeat the check for any special-format version. Partners, Prime users, and Twitch Turbo users have a longer 60-day ordinary window, but the seven-day deadline for a vertical or 2K variant still applies. A longer standard retention period is not a reason to postpone preserving the format you actually need.

Keep your archive independent of Twitch’s listing. Twitch’s retention rules can change, and a destination service can have its own account, processing, or access requirements. The safest operational pattern is a verified local file plus an additional copy when the recording has lasting value.

When several broadcasts are waiting, process the one with the earliest special-format deadline first, then the ordinary VODs in order of expiration. This avoids spending the available time on a 1080p or horizontal copy while a vertical or 2K version is about to disappear. It also leaves time to retry a failed transfer before the source is removed.

A concise pre-stream and post-stream checklist

Before going live

  • Store Past Broadcasts: on and confirmed in Stream Settings.
  • Archive destination: enough local space, or a verified YouTube connection.
  • Format priority: know whether you need vertical, horizontal, 1080p, or 2K output.

After going offline

  • Confirm the VOD appears in Video Producer.
  • Identify the account-based deadline and any seven-day special-format deadline.
  • Download or export the video individually.
  • Verify playback, audio, and completion.
  • Store the copy somewhere you can retrieve without Twitch.

For important clips

  • Do not rely solely on the clip page as your archive.
  • Keep the full VOD when possible.
  • Remember that Twitch’s no-expiration statement is specifically attached to dual-format clips, not every possible clip situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to save a Twitch VOD?

After confirming that the VOD appears in Creator Dashboard → Content → Video Producer, open its three-dot menu and choose Download. Start as soon as possible, especially if you are an Affiliate or another broadcaster with a 14-day or seven-day window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I enable Store Past Broadcasts after a stream and recover it?

No. Twitch says the setting is off by default, and a broadcast that was not stored cannot later be recreated by turning the setting on.

Do Twitch VODs expire after seven days for everyone?

No. Twitch lists 60 days for Partners, Prime users, and Twitch Turbo users; 14 days for Affiliates; and seven days for other broadcasters. However, the vertical version of a dual-format VOD and the 2K version of a VOD expire after seven days.

Is exporting to YouTube better than downloading?

Neither is universally better. Downloading gives you a local file and control over your storage; exporting sends an individual VOD to a connected YouTube account. Compare available disk space, upload time, account access, and how you plan to verify and retrieve the archive.

Why is my long VOD taking so long to download?

Twitch cautions that a long video may take time before the download begins. Leave time before the retention deadline, keep the destination device available, and retry while the VOD is still listed if the transfer fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Twitch unmute the copy I download?

No. If Twitch’s Audio Recognition system muted part of the VOD, downloading produces the muted version Twitch made available; it does not create an unmuted file.

Do Twitch clips expire?

Twitch’s dual-format guidance says clips created from dual-format streams are available in vertical and horizontal formats and do not expire. Twitch’s general on-demand guidance does not establish one universal expiration rule for every clip circumstance, so preserve important clips independently.

Can Twitch Support restore an expired VOD?

No. Twitch says expired or unsaved VOD content no longer exists on its servers and Support cannot recover it. Archive while the video is still available.

The Bottom Line

Turn on Store Past Broadcasts before every important stream, confirm the VOD appears, and preserve it immediately through Video Producer’s Download or Export options. Plan for 60, 14, or seven days according to your account, but treat vertical and 2K versions as seven-day priorities. Verify every copy, keep an independent backup, and do not rely on Twitch Support to restore content after it disappears.
