Use Coolify’s Scheduled Tasks screen to run a command inside a running application or service container. Open the resource, add a task with a name, an in-container command, a five-field cron expression (or a supported named schedule such as daily), and a timeout from 60 to 36,000 seconds. Select the correct container when the resource has more than one, save it, then use Execute now and Recent executions to verify the result.

What a Coolify scheduled task does
A Coolify scheduled task is a recurring command launched inside an application or service container. The command runs in the same container context as the deployed resource, rather than on the host as a general-purpose host cron entry. That distinction determines which binaries, environment variables, working directory, files and network access are available.

Coolify’s scheduler checks for due work every minute. The time at which a task becomes due is calculated using the timezone configured on the server running the resource. A task therefore does not use the timezone of your laptop or necessarily the timezone displayed by your browser.
Each task has five practical settings:
- Name: a short description that identifies the job in the dashboard.
- Command: the command to execute inside the selected container.
- Frequency: a five-field cron expression or a supported named schedule.
- Timeout: the maximum run time, in seconds.
- Container: the target container when more than one container can run the command.
A scheduled task is created enabled. It can still be skipped if the task is disabled, the resource is stopped, or the connected server is not functioning.

Check these prerequisites first
Before creating a job, confirm that the command succeeds in the same container and that the resource will be running when the schedule is due.
- The application or service is deployed and currently running.
- The command’s executable and dependencies are present in the target image.
- Any required environment variables, mounted files and permissions are available in that container.
- You know which container should run the command if the resource has several containers.
- The connected server is healthy enough for Coolify to dispatch scheduled work.
For a data-changing command, test it from the resource’s container Terminal first. This catches missing binaries, incorrect paths and permission errors before a recurring schedule starts producing failures.

Create a scheduled task for an application
- Open the application. In the application view, select Scheduled Tasks.
- Start a task. Select + Add.
- Name it by purpose. Use a concise name such as
daily report cleanuporLaravel scheduler tick. A purpose-based name is easier to identify in execution history than a generic name such asjob 1. - Enter the command exactly as it should run in the container. The official example is
php artisan schedule:run. Do not adddocker exec; Coolify enters the selected container itself. - Choose a frequency. Enter a five-field cron expression, such as
0 0 * * *for midnight every day, or choose a supported named schedule such asdaily. - Set the timeout. Enter a value from 60 through 36,000 seconds. The dashboard default is 300 seconds.
- Select a container when necessary. If the application has multiple containers, choose the one that contains the command and its files. Leaving the target ambiguous can prevent execution.
- Save the task. A newly saved task is enabled.
- Run a controlled test. While the application is running, select Execute now. Then open Recent executions and inspect the status, start and end times, duration and captured output.
Why the command must be container-native
The command field is not a host shell in which you address another container. It is the process Coolify starts in the target container. For example, enter php artisan schedule:run, not docker exec app php artisan schedule:run. The latter asks for Docker tooling and a container name inside the application container, neither of which is implied by the scheduled-task interface.
Choosing a useful timeout
The 300-second default is suitable for a short job, but it is not a guarantee that the operation will finish in that time. Set a longer value when the command is expected to process a large data set, and keep it below the dashboard limit of 36,000 seconds. A timeout terminates an execution that exceeds the configured duration; it does not make a slow command faster. Set the value from the job’s normal worst-case duration rather than from the frequency interval.
Understanding Coolify’s cron frequency field
Coolify accepts a standard five-field cron expression. The fields are read from left to right as minute, hour, day of month, month and day of week.

| Position | Field | Meaning | Example value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Minute | Minute within the hour | 0 |
| 2 | Hour | Hour within the day | 0 |
| 3 | Day of month | Calendar day | * |
| 4 | Month | Month of the year | * |
| 5 | Day of week | Weekly day selector | * |
In 0 0 * * *, the first zero means minute zero and the second zero means hour zero; the three asterisks allow every day of the month, every month and every day of the week. The resulting schedule is once daily at midnight according to the deployment server’s timezone. Coolify also supports named schedules where offered by the dashboard; daily is one documented example.

A six-field expression that adds seconds is not the documented format for this field. When a job appears to run at the wrong local time, check the server timezone before changing the expression.
Server timezone and the every-minute dispatcher
Coolify dispatches due scheduled work every minute. That means a task is evaluated on minute boundaries rather than continuously. The scheduler’s timezone is the timezone configured for the server running the resource, so a “midnight” task means midnight in that server’s configured timezone.
To plan a schedule safely:
- Identify the server on which the application or service is running.
- Confirm that server’s configured timezone.
- Translate the desired business time into that timezone.
- Save the expression and use Execute now to test the command itself.
- After the next due minute, check Recent executions for the recorded start time.
A task is not a catch-up mechanism for downtime. If the application or service is not running when the scheduler evaluates it, the execution is skipped rather than run later merely because the resource starts again.
Schedule a command in a Docker Compose service
For a Docker Compose resource, open Configuration > Scheduled Tasks. Select the Compose service component that should execute the command. The component selection is important because a Compose project can contain a web process, worker, database and other containers with different files and tools.

Use the Compose service name, not Coolify’s generated suffix
If Coolify asks for the component name manually, enter the service name from the Compose file, such as mysql. Do not append Coolify’s generated -<service-uuid> suffix. The suffix identifies a deployed resource internally; it is not the Compose service name used for this selection.
When one or several component containers are running
When exactly one component container is running, Coolify can use it without a saved container name. When several containers are running, the target must be unambiguous. Select the component or provide the appropriate container target so Coolify does not have to guess.
A command that belongs in a worker container can fail in a web container even when both are part of the same Compose project. Check that the selected component contains the executable, application code and mounted data required by the command.
Test and verify a task without waiting for its schedule
There are two separate questions: did Coolify start the process, and did the process produce the intended effect? Use the dashboard to answer the first, then verify the application or external system for the second.
- Open the running application or service.
- Select Scheduled Tasks (or, for Compose, Configuration > Scheduled Tasks).
- Open the task and select Execute now.
- Open Recent executions.
- Check the execution status, start time, end time, duration and captured output.
- Confirm the real outcome: for example, inspect the expected records, generated files, queue state or external API result in the system the command is meant to change.
A successful process exit only says that the command returned success. It does not prove that the intended records, files or external side effect changed. A command can complete without error while finding no matching rows, writing to an unexpected path or receiving an application-level rejection.

Why a Coolify scheduled task is skipped
A skipped execution is different from a command failure: Coolify did not run the process at all. Check these conditions in order:
- The task is disabled. Re-enable it in the Scheduled Tasks view.
- The application or service is stopped. Start the resource before the next due minute.
- The connected server is not functional. Restore the server connection or health before relying on the schedule.
- The schedule was interpreted in another timezone. Compare the server timezone with the intended local time.
After correcting the condition, use Execute now while the resource is running. This gives an immediate execution record instead of waiting for the next scheduled minute.

Why an execution fails
If Coolify launches the process but it ends unsuccessfully or cannot be started, inspect the execution output and target configuration.
No target container is running
A task cannot run if the selected target has no running container. Start the resource and verify that the intended component is actually up, especially after a deployment or restart that changes the active containers.
The configured container or component cannot be found
For multi-container applications, reselect the container that contains the command. For Compose, use the service name such as mysql without Coolify’s generated suffix. A stale or ambiguous target is a configuration problem, not a cron-expression problem.

The command exits with a nonzero status
Run the exact command in the target container’s Terminal and inspect its error output. Check executable availability, paths, permissions, environment variables and application configuration. Keep the command in the container’s own shell context; do not wrap it in docker exec.
The timeout is exceeded
Review the duration shown in Recent executions. If the operation is legitimately long-running, raise the timeout within the 60–36,000-second range. If it should be short, investigate slow queries, blocked network calls or unbounded work instead of simply increasing the limit.
Design jobs that remain safe when they run repeatedly
Coolify controls when the command is dispatched, but the command itself must be safe for recurring execution. Before enabling a data-changing task, decide what should happen if it runs twice, if a previous run took longer than expected, or if the resource is restarted.
- Prefer an operation that can be repeated without duplicating records or charging an external system twice.
- Use the application’s own locking or “already processed” checks when the job can overlap.
- Write commands with explicit paths and options so they do not depend on an interactive shell prompt.
- Keep the command’s output useful for diagnosing failures; the dashboard captures output in the execution record.
- Test on a small or non-production data set before enabling a production frequency.
- Set the timeout high enough for the documented workload but low enough to expose a hung process.
These are command-design practices rather than additional Coolify settings. The scheduled-task screen supplies dispatch, targeting, timeout and execution history; application-level correctness remains the responsibility of the command and its code.
Coolify Scheduled Tasks versus other scheduling locations
The right location depends on where the command must run and what should happen when the resource is unavailable. Coolify’s behavior is documented below; behavior of a particular host cron implementation or in-application scheduler depends on that system and is not established by Coolify’s documentation.
| Decision point | Coolify Scheduled Task | External host cron | In-application scheduler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Execution context | Inside the selected application or service container | Host context; exact behavior depends on the host setup | Inside the application process or its scheduler, depending on the framework |
| Timezone source | Timezone configured on the server running the resource | Not established here; check the host scheduler | Not established here; check the application’s scheduler |
| When the resource is stopped | Execution is skipped while the application or service is not running | Not established here | Not established here |
| Output visibility | Status, start/end times, duration and captured output appear in Recent executions | Not established here | Not established here |
| Timeout control | 60–36,000 seconds; default 300 seconds | Not established here | Not established here |
| Container targeting | Select the application container or Compose service component when needed | Host-level targeting rules apply | Application-level targeting rules apply |
Choose a Coolify task when the work belongs to a deployed container and you want its run history visible beside the resource. Use an application scheduler when the framework’s own scheduling and queue semantics are the requirement. Use a host scheduler only when host-level execution is intentional and you have separately verified its timezone, logging, permissions and behavior during resource downtime.
A practical setup checklist
- Confirm the application or service is running.
- Open the correct Scheduled Tasks screen.
- Name the task for its purpose.
- Enter the command without
docker exec. - Test that command in the target container Terminal.
- Use five cron fields or a supported named schedule such as
daily. - Translate the desired time into the deployment server’s timezone.
- Set a timeout from 60 to 36,000 seconds; remember that the default is 300 seconds.
- Select the correct container for a multi-container application.
- For Compose, select the service component and use its service name without Coolify’s generated suffix.
- Save the task and confirm it is enabled.
- Run Execute now.
- Inspect Recent executions and then verify the actual data or external effect.
The shortest reliable recipe
For a single-container application, open Scheduled Tasks, choose + Add, name the task, enter the in-container command, set a five-field frequency such as 0 0 * * *, choose a timeout between 60 and 36,000 seconds, save, and run Execute now. For a Compose deployment, perform the same setup under Configuration > Scheduled Tasks, select the correct service component, and use the Compose service name without Coolify’s generated suffix. If the task does not appear in the execution history, check its enabled state, resource status, server health, timezone and container target before changing the cron expression.
