The reliable way to back up an Unturned dedicated server is to create a clean save point, then copy the entire U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> directory to dated storage outside the live installation. Unturned has no built-in autosave, so copying files while the server is changing can leave a backup that does not restore cleanly.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Unturned servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Use the server’s Save command while it is running, or issue Shutdown to save and close it safely. Preserve the ServerID directory together with its configuration, Workshop manifest, permissions and any plugin or module files. Test at least one restore on a disposable ServerID instead of assuming that a successful copy is usable.

What an Unturned backup must protect
A usable backup is more than a copy of the map’s level file. The ServerID directory is the authoritative save boundary for a dedicated server: it holds the world state and the configuration that tells the server how to load that state. If you copy only one level file, you can lose player inventories, permissions, settings or the information needed to download Workshop content.
SteamCMD installs the dedicated server under steamapps/common/U3DS. Each server launched with a ServerID gets its own directory under U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>. A server started with +InternetServer/<ServerID> or +LanServer/<ServerID> uses that corresponding directory. Back up the directory for the ServerID you actually run, not a different test instance.

Why a clean save point comes first
Unturned’s official server documentation states that there is no built-in autosave. You must use Save to manually save while the server is running, or Shutdown to safely save and close it. This is the boundary that makes a file copy meaningful.
- Save: keeps the server online while writing the current state.
- Shutdown: saves and closes the process, removing writes that could still be in progress.
- Copying without either step: risks a mixed snapshot in which some files describe an older state and others describe a newer one.
If players are online, announce the save or maintenance window before using Shutdown. If you use Save, allow the operation to finish before beginning the copy; the important requirement is that the server is no longer changing the files you are archiving.
Where dedicated-server saves are stored
Windows installations
The documentation expresses the location with a Windows-style path such as ...U3DSServers. Inside it, select the exact <ServerID> used by your launch script. Do not confuse the installation’s general files with the per-server save directory.
Linux installations
On Linux, the equivalent path uses forward slashes: U3DS/Servers/<ServerID> beneath the SteamCMD installation. The same ServerID rule applies. A host can contain several ServerID directories, each representing a separate server configuration and save.

macOS limitation
The cited Unturned documentation supports dedicated hosting on Windows and Linux and lists macOS hosting as unsupported. A backup procedure cannot make an unsupported hosting platform supported; move the server to a supported operating system before planning a production restore.
Manual backup procedure
- Identify the live ServerID. Read the launch entry and note whether it uses
+InternetServer/<ServerID>or+LanServer/<ServerID>. The text between the slash and the end of the argument is the directory name you must archive. - Warn players and choose the save boundary. For a short maintenance window, issue
Saveand wait for the save to complete. For the strongest consistency, issueShutdownand wait until the server process has closed. - Open the server’s save root. Navigate to
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>, using the path style for your operating system. - Copy the complete ServerID directory. Copy the directory itself, including every subdirectory and file. Do not limit the operation to a level file or to a single configuration file.
- Place the copy outside the live installation. Store it on a separate backup location rather than beside the files that the running server uses. A second disk, another machine or other separate storage protects the archive if the installation becomes corrupted.
- Add a date to the backup record. Keep dated copies so you can choose a known-good point before an accidental edit, failed update or corruption event. Use a rotating schedule that matches how quickly your world changes; a frequently played public server needs more frequent points than an occasional private server.
- Record the ServerID and source. Keep the directory name and the date with the archive. This prevents restoring the right files into the wrong server instance when several ServerID directories exist.
The copy is not complete until the archive contains the entire ServerID directory and the files needed to reproduce its dependencies. The following checklist makes those requirements explicit.
Files and directories to include
Core save and configuration data
- The full
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>directory: this is the primary unit of backup and includes the server’s saved world and server-specific configuration. Server/Commands.dat: preserve command-related server settings and permissions data stored there.Config.txtor the applicable difficulty configuration: this determines settings that affect how the restored server behaves.WorkshopDownloadConfig.json: this records the Workshop IDs the server is expected to download.- Administrator and permission files: retain them so staff access and player permissions return with the server.
When these files are already inside the ServerID directory, copying the complete directory captures them. Listing them separately is useful as a verification checklist: after copying, confirm that each expected file exists in the archive rather than assuming a partial copy was sufficient.
Workshop content
Workshop IDs are listed in WorkshopDownloadConfig.json. The files and their dependencies are updated at startup, so a restore needs both the manifest and a server start that can process it. If the manifest is missing, the server may start without the maps or items that the saved world expects.

Do not treat downloaded Workshop files as a substitute for the manifest. The manifest tells the restored installation what content belongs to the server; the downloaded files supply the local copy. Preserve the configuration and verify the IDs after restoring.
Rocket/LDM modules and plugins
If Rocket/LDM is installed, preserve the module and plugin setup in addition to the base ServerID data. The documentation notes that the Rocket.Unturned module is copied from Extras to Modules. A backup that contains the world but omits the module or plugin directories can produce a technically valid server that lacks the commands, permissions or gameplay features players expect.
Include the plugin and module directories used by that ServerID, along with their configuration files. When checking an archive, compare its module and plugin layout with the live installation before shutting the live copy down.
Choosing a backup schedule and storage layout
Unturned publishes no retention rule for server backups. Retention is an operational decision: base it on how often the world changes and how far back you may need to recover. A practical rotation keeps several recent dated copies and at least one copy on separate storage.

Match frequency to world activity
- Frequently changing public world: create backups often enough that losing the interval between two copies is acceptable to your community.
- Occasional private server: a less frequent schedule may be sufficient, provided you create an extra copy before major configuration or Workshop changes.
- Before risky maintenance: make a clean save and dated archive before changing difficulty settings, replacing plugins, changing Workshop IDs or moving the installation.
Keep generations, not one overwrite
Overwriting a single archive defeats the purpose of dated recovery. Keep multiple generations so a newly discovered corruption does not replace the last usable state. Store at least one generation separately from the machine that runs the server; a disk failure or damaged installation should not destroy both the live files and every backup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManual copies versus automation
A manual copy is simple and easy to inspect, but it depends on an administrator remembering the save boundary and the copy. A scheduled job can create regular archives, but it must still establish a consistent save point before copying. The implementation for sending Save or Shutdown depends on how you administer the server, so do not schedule a raw file copy that runs while the world is actively changing.
| Method | Save consistency | What is captured | Retention and off-machine storage | Restore testing | Administrative effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual copy | Administrator issues Save or Shutdown first |
Whatever the administrator selects; use the complete ServerID directory | Administrator creates dated copies and moves them to separate storage | Must be scheduled and performed manually | Low setup, recurring human effort |
| Scheduled script | Script or an associated administration step must create a clean save point before copying | Can consistently target the complete ServerID directory when configured correctly | Can rotate dated generations and copy them to separate storage when those rules are implemented | Still requires a deliberate test restore | Higher setup, less routine handling |
| Managed hosting | Depends on the provider’s save and backup implementation | Verify that it includes the complete ServerID data, configuration, Workshop manifest and plugins | Verify retention and whether a copy is held outside the live host | Verify that the service offers a usable restore test | Less server maintenance, but feature verification is essential |
The table describes decision criteria, not a guarantee from any provider. For managed hosting, confirm the actual backup scope, retention, operating-system support and restore process before relying on it.

- Prepare the test target. Use a supported Windows or Linux installation with the same dedicated-server layout. Identify a disposable ServerID that will not be used by players.
- Stop the live instance. For a production recovery, issue
Shutdownand wait for the process to close. Do not restore over files that are still being written. - Move the current directory aside. Rename or relocate the existing
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>directory instead of deleting it. Keeping it aside gives you a fallback if the archive is incomplete. - Copy the archived directory into the original path. Restore the directory using the same ServerID name and the same
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>location expected by the launch entry. - Verify configuration before launch. Check
Commands.dat,Config.txtor the relevant difficulty configuration, administrator and permission files, andWorkshopDownloadConfig.json. Confirm that the Workshop IDs and module/plugin directories match the intended server. - Start with the matching launch mode. Use the same
+InternetServer/<ServerID>or+LanServer/<ServerID>arrangement appropriate to the restored server. - Check the restored state in game. Confirm the expected map, player structures, inventories and permissions. These checks cover the failures that a server-start test alone will miss.
- Keep the old directory until validation is complete. Once the restored instance passes the checks, retain or remove the moved-aside directory according to your storage policy. If validation fails, stop the test instance and restore the moved-aside directory while investigating the archive.
Troubleshooting an incomplete or failed restore
The server starts, but the world is empty or old
The most common cause is restoring the wrong ServerID or copying only a level file. Stop the instance, confirm the launch argument and directory name, then restore the complete archived ServerID directory. Verify that the save data and configuration came from the same dated copy.
Recommended Free Tools
Players, inventories or permissions are missing
Check that the archive contains the full ServerID directory, administrator and permission files, and Commands.dat. A map-only backup cannot recreate player and access data that was never copied.
Workshop maps or items do not load
Open WorkshopDownloadConfig.json and compare its IDs with the server you intended to restore. The manifest must be present, and the restored server must be allowed to update the listed files and dependencies at startup. If the IDs are wrong or absent, you may have restored a different configuration.
Plugin commands or features are gone
Verify the Rocket/LDM module, plugin directories and their configuration files. The Rocket.Unturned module belongs in Modules when installed, and the documented setup copies it from Extras. A world-only archive does not recreate that module layout.
The backup itself is inconsistent
If the copy was made while the server was running without a completed Save, or without a clean Shutdown, create a new archive from a known-good state. Do not try to repair a mixed snapshot by guessing which individual files to replace; repeat the save-and-copy process for the whole ServerID directory.

The essential sequence is simple: save cleanly, copy the complete ServerID directory, preserve its dependencies, keep dated copies away from the live installation, and prove one archive by restoring it.
