You can secure PlayStation Network sign-in with a passkey or with two-step verification (2SV). They are separate sign-in approaches: PlayStation describes passkey authentication as an alternative to 2SV, so do not assume you can combine them as two simultaneous factors on one sign-in. Choose the flow that fits your devices and recovery plan, then keep a way to regain access if your phone is lost.
The menu paths below follow PlayStation Support instructions; labels and availability can vary by region or change. The cited passkey guide is for India and the 2SV setup guide is for Malaysia.

Choose the sign-in method that fits your recovery plan
| Consideration | Passkey | Two-step verification |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in flow | Uses a saved passkey on a supported device; PlayStation describes it as a password replacement. | Uses your sign-in ID and password, then a code from an authenticator app or text message. |
| What you need access to | The device or passkey sync method storing your passkey. | The registered phone or authenticator app; a backup code can be used for recovery. |
| If you lose your phone | If another device has the same verification method, use it to sign in and register a replacement passkey; otherwise contact PlayStation Support. | Use a saved backup code. If you have neither the phone nor a backup code, contact PlayStation Support. |
| Best fit | A supported device and a clear way to recover the passkey. | A phone or authenticator app you can access, plus safely stored backup codes. |
This is a comparison of PlayStation’s documented sign-in and recovery flows, not a measured ranking of security effectiveness. PlayStation recommends passkeys in its security best-practice guidance and retains 2SV instructions for devices that do not support passkeys. Set up a PlayStation passkey
From Account Management
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Security and enable Sign in with Passkey.
- Select Create a Passkey and follow the prompts on the device that will store or sync it. PlayStation sends an email confirmation after creation.
From a PS5
- On the console, open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey.
- Scan the displayed QR code with your mobile device and complete passkey creation there.
To add or remove passkeys later, go to Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys. PlayStation lists support on most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later, and recommends current versions of Safari, Chrome, or Edge for browser sign-in. On Android, check Google Play services compatibility; PlayStation advises against using an Android PIN as a passkey. Its guide also notes that some hardware security keys may have issues and suggests considering synced mobile passkeys. PlayStation provides ten 2SV backup codes, each usable once. Record them during setup and store them somewhere safe and separate from the phone you use for verification. You can find them later under Account Management > Security > Backup Codes. If you use most of the codes, PlayStation says you can generate new ones by turning 2SV off and reactivating it. Protect the account during setup and everyday use
- Never share your account details, and sign out after using someone else’s console.
- For passkey setup or sign-in, scan only the QR code shown in an official PlayStation account or console flow. Do not scan codes sent by other people in messages promising vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or other offers.
- A password manager may help with general account-security practices, but PlayStation does not require a particular manager for these setup flows.
