To archive an entire Telegram channel on your own VPS, use a user-account client that connects through Telegram’s MTProto API—not a conventional Bot API token. A documented Telegram Media Downloader deployment can perform a history backfill, continue monitoring new posts, and write messages and media to storage you control. This guide explains the access model, a Docker-based setup, persistent storage, security, and a second-copy backup plan.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you are actually self-hosting
The phrase “Telegram backup bot” is easy to misunderstand. Telegram’s ordinary Bot API is designed for bot accounts and does not provide a general way for a newly created bot to read every historical message in a channel. The whole-channel archiver covered here signs in as the channel owner’s or administrator’s Telegram user account over MTProto. Telegram describes its API as a way to build customized clients, and its method reference includes channel message retrieval methods such as channels.getMessages.

Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11That distinction determines the setup. You need an API ID and API hash, a phone-based account login, and a persistent session. The account must be able to open the channel and read the messages you want to preserve. A token copied from BotFather is not a substitute for that user authorization.
Once authenticated, the archiver can request older messages for a history backfill and then watch for new posts. The result is an archive of the text and media that the signed-in account can access, stored on your VPS rather than only inside Telegram.

Choose the access and deployment model first
| Decision | What changes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Bot API bot or user-account MTProto client | A Bot API bot is not the documented whole-history approach. The MTProto client uses a phone login, a reusable session, and the account’s channel permissions. | Use the user-account client when you need historical backfill and ongoing monitoring. |
| Docker Compose or native binary | Compose groups the service, volumes, and updates in one definition. A native binary removes the container layer but leaves you responsible for service supervision and file paths. | Choose Compose if you are comfortable with Docker; choose the binary when your existing Linux service tooling is stronger than your container workflow. |
| Dashboard archiver or simpler downloader | The dashboard-oriented project combines backfill, realtime monitoring, account management, and status visibility. The simpler Telegram Backup Downloader writes message text, photos, videos, and documents into organized folders and uses SQLite to track progress. | Use the dashboard when one service must handle both initial import and continued monitoring. Use the simpler downloader when a focused file export and a command-line-oriented workflow are enough. |
| VPS-only or VPS plus a second copy | A VPS protects you from relying solely on Telegram, but it does not protect against a lost VPS account, disk failure, deletion, or a compromised server. | Keep an additional local, remote, or offline copy for material you cannot recreate. |
The two projects describe different feature sets. Their documentation does not establish comparative speed, CPU consumption, or reliability, so select by workflow rather than by an assumed performance advantage.
Prerequisites and information to collect
- A Linux VPS: Select persistent disk capacity based on the channel’s real media volume, posting rate, and retention period. The documentation reviewed here does not justify a universal RAM, CPU, disk-size, bandwidth, or monthly-cost recommendation.
- Administrative access: You need SSH access and permission to install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin, or permission to run the native binary.
- Telegram API credentials: Obtain an API ID and API hash through Telegram’s official developer process. Treat the hash as a secret.
- The account that can read the channel: It may be the owner or an administrator, but it must be able to view the history and media you intend to archive.
- A phone that can receive the login code: The first dashboard login adds the account with a phone number and Telegram login code. If the account uses two-step verification, you will also need its 2FA password.
- A storage plan: Decide which VPS directory will hold application configuration, session data, state or database files, downloaded channel files, and logs. These paths must survive container recreation and upgrades.
- A backup destination: Plan a second local, remote, or offline destination before the first large backfill finishes.
Before deployment, read the selected release’s README and compose file. Image tags, environment variables, exposed ports, and restore syntax can change. Pin a specific release or image tag instead of silently tracking an unreviewed floating tag.

Prepare persistent storage on the VPS
Containers are replaceable; your archive is not. If downloads or the Telegram session live only in a container’s writable layer, removing or recreating that container can erase the archive or force a new login. Create a project directory on a persistent VPS volume and keep the compose file there.
mkdir -p "$HOME/telegram-channel-archive/data"
cd "$HOME/telegram-channel-archive"
The exact subdirectories depend on the selected project. Map every path documented by its compose file, not just the media directory. The second reviewed project explicitly expects host-mounted locations for configuration, the session file, state, channel files, and logs. A practical layout separates those functions:
- Configuration: compose and environment files, protected from other users.
- Session: the authenticated Telegram session file. Losing it means an interactive login again; leaking it can give someone access to the account session.
- State: SQLite or other progress data used to remember downloaded message IDs and resume after interruption.
- Channel files: message text and media, arranged according to the project’s export format.
- Logs: service output needed to diagnose FloodWait pauses, failed downloads, or authentication problems.
Mount the channel-files directory on the disk with the most room. The main project documents moving its downloads directory to another disk, which is useful when the operating-system volume is small. Monitor free space and inode usage during a backfill; a nearly full disk can stop downloads and also prevent the database from updating cleanly.
Deploy the documented Docker Compose quick start
The Telegram Media Downloader documentation describes a dashboard-based Compose flow. The following sequence follows that flow while leaving release-specific image names and ports to the version you select.

- Create and secure the project directory. Log in over SSH, create the directory shown above, and restrict it to the administrator account. Keep environment files, API credentials, and session data out of public web directories and source-control repositories.
- Download the compose file from the project’s current release documentation. Save it in the project directory. Check the image tag, declared volumes, environment variables, and published ports before starting anything. Pin the tag to the release you reviewed.
- Validate the Compose definition. From the project directory, run
docker compose config. Correct missing variables, invalid volume paths, and YAML errors before creating containers. - Start the stack. Run
docker compose up -d, then inspectdocker compose psanddocker compose logs --tail=100. A healthy container only means the process started; it does not prove that Telegram authentication or storage mounts are correct. - Open the dashboard privately. Set the dashboard password through the documented first-run flow. Do not assume the default port or bind the interface publicly. Use the port mapping in your selected compose file and, where possible, reach it through an SSH tunnel or a private network.
- Enter Telegram API credentials. Provide the API ID and API hash in the dashboard’s account setup. Verify that they belong to the intended Telegram developer account and keep them confidential.
- Add the Telegram account. Enter the phone number, submit the Telegram login code, and complete the optional 2FA prompt when enabled. The account session is then written to the persistent session location defined by the compose file.
- Check the session mount. Restart the service and confirm that it reuses the session instead of asking for a new code. If a restart always triggers login, inspect ownership, permissions, and the host-to-container session mapping.
- Choose the first operation. Enable realtime monitoring if you want new posts captured from this point forward, or start a history backfill to retrieve older messages. For a complete archive, perform the backfill and leave monitoring enabled afterward.
- Watch the first run. Follow the logs while a small portion of history downloads. Confirm that text, photos, videos, and documents appear in the mounted channel-files directory and that progress state changes. Then allow the larger backfill to continue.
This is a documented setup path, not a guarantee that every release has identical screens. If a release renames a dashboard field or changes its compose variables, follow that release’s README rather than copying an older example.
Using the simpler Telegram Backup Downloader
The second project is a useful alternative when you prefer a narrower downloader. Its documentation describes Docker Compose, organized folders for message text, photos, videos, and documents, and SQLite progress tracking. Its first account login is interactive, so a non-interactive service start cannot replace the initial phone-code and 2FA process.
Mount the host session file explicitly, along with the state database, downloaded channel files, configuration, and logs. Start the container in a terminal where you can complete the first login. After the session file is created, later starts can reuse it without repeating authorization.
That project also documents a sample status API that binds to a network interface without authentication and warns that it should be exposed only on a trusted network. Do not publish that endpoint directly to the internet as part of a generic VPS setup. If you need status visibility, bind it to localhost or a private interface and protect access with your existing VPN, firewall, or SSH tunnel.

Backfill strategy and ongoing monitoring
Start with a controlled sample
Before requesting years of history, select a limited range or a single channel segment if the interface allows it. Verify filenames, timestamps, captions, replies where supported, and the media types you care about. This catches incorrect mounts and permission errors before they produce a large, confusing partial archive.
Run the history backfill
A backfill requests older messages in batches. Keep the VPS online and avoid repeatedly stopping and starting the container while it is working. The downloader records progress so an interruption can resume, but a resumed job is still dependent on intact state and session files.

Enable realtime monitoring
After the historical range is present, enable monitoring so new posts are downloaded as they arrive. Monitoring is not a substitute for the initial backfill: it normally covers future activity, while older messages require a separate history operation.
Expect FloodWait pauses
The Telegram Media Downloader documentation says it respects FloodWait limits, but it also warns that heavy automated downloading carries risk. A pause is not necessarily a broken installation. Let the documented delay elapse, reduce unnecessary concurrency if the release exposes that option, and inspect logs for authentication or storage errors before restarting repeatedly.

- Protect API credentials: Store the API hash in an environment file or secret store readable only by the service account. Never paste it into a public issue, screenshot, or repository.
- Protect the session: Treat the session file like a logged-in account credential. Restrict file permissions, limit shell access, and include it in encrypted backups only when necessary.
- Use a strong dashboard password: Change the first-run password and do not reuse the Telegram 2FA password.
- Limit network exposure: Allow SSH from trusted addresses, use a firewall, and keep the dashboard and any status API on localhost or a private network unless the project documents a properly authenticated public deployment.
- Update deliberately: Review release notes, image tags, migration instructions, and changed volume paths before running a pull or recreating containers. Keep the previous image tag and a copy of configuration so you can roll back.
- Separate operator accounts: Run the service with the least host privilege practical. Do not give the container unrestricted access to the whole VPS filesystem.
- Remember account risk: Automated downloading is not risk-free. The project FAQ states, “No tool can promise zero risk.” This is the project’s warning about heavy automated downloading, not a guarantee from Telegram.
Successful authentication does not grant access to channels the account cannot read. Private channels, restricted posts, deleted messages, expired media, and content hidden from that account cannot be promised in the archive.
Plan storage around the channel, not a generic VPS size
There is no defensible universal VPS specification for this task. A text-only announcement channel and a high-volume video channel have radically different storage and bandwidth needs. Estimate from the channel’s own posting history, then leave room for temporary files, logs, the database, filesystem overhead, and growth between backup runs.
- Measure the size of a representative sample containing the media types you expect.
- Multiply by the number of historical periods you intend to retain.
- Add headroom for future posts and for a second copy or staging area during synchronization.
- Set log rotation and watch disk alerts so a full volume does not go unnoticed.
- Move the downloads directory to a larger mounted disk when the operating-system volume is not suitable.
An external hard drive or SSD is optional. It is useful only after files have been retrieved from the VPS or synchronized to it; it is not required to install or run the archiver.
Make a second backup copy
A VPS copy is an archive location, not automatically an independent backup. If the provider account, virtual disk, credentials, or running service is lost, a single copy disappears with it.

Choose a destination
The main project documents local and remote backup destinations and optional encryption. A local destination can be another disk on the server; a remote destination can be a separate host or storage service; an offline destination can be a disconnected drive retrieved after synchronization. Keep at least one copy outside the VPS failure domain for important channels.
Back up the right data
- Downloaded channel files, including captions and message text.
- The progress database or state files, so you know what has already been retrieved.
- Configuration needed to recreate the service.
- The session file only when your security policy permits it; encrypt this backup and restrict access.
- Logs or a status export when they are needed for audit or troubleshooting.
Encrypt and verify
Use the project’s documented encryption option when sending backups to a destination you do not fully control. After each backup cycle, compare file counts and sizes, inspect recently changed files, and periodically perform a restore to a separate directory or machine. The project documents an offline restore command, but restore syntax is version-specific; confirm the exact command in the README for the release you run rather than copying an older invocation.
Keep generations
Do not let a synchronization job instantly delete the only good copy when a bad login, corrupted mount, or accidental deletion propagates. Retain multiple dated snapshots when the data is important, and test that an older snapshot can be opened independently of the live VPS.

Common failures and recovery steps
The dashboard keeps asking for the login code
The session is probably not being written to persistent storage. Stop the service, inspect the host path and container mount in the compose file, correct ownership and permissions, and authenticate once more. Restart and verify that the same session file is reused.
The service starts but no files appear
Check that the channel-files directory is mounted where the application writes, that the container user can write there, and that the signed-in account can view the channel. Review logs for a paused FloodWait, an invalid channel selection, or a full disk.
The history is incomplete
Confirm that you ran a history backfill rather than only enabling monitoring. Verify the account’s access to older posts and inspect the project’s progress database. Deleted or inaccessible Telegram content cannot be reconstructed by the downloader.

The container is healthy but the dashboard is unreachable
Inspect the compose port mapping and whether the service binds to localhost, a private interface, or all interfaces. Prefer an SSH tunnel or private network access. Avoid opening an unauthenticated status endpoint to the public internet.
The VPS runs out of space
Pause the backfill, identify the largest mounted directory, rotate or remove unneeded logs, and expand or relocate the downloads volume. Do not delete the progress database casually; doing so can cause repeated downloads or loss of resume information.
Telegram imposes a long wait
Follow the FloodWait delay reported by the application. Repeatedly restarting to bypass it can increase load and does not guarantee faster completion. Once the delay ends, resume with the existing session and state.
Operational checklist
- API ID and API hash are stored as secrets.
- The account can read the target channel and its historical range.
- Session, state, configuration, media, and logs are on persistent mounts.
- The compose image is pinned to a reviewed release.
- The dashboard password is changed and access is private.
- A sample backfill has produced the expected text and media.
- Realtime monitoring is enabled after the historical import.
- FloodWait messages and disk usage are monitored.
- A second copy is synchronized, encrypted where appropriate, and periodically restored.
- Release notes and Telegram account-security changes are reviewed before upgrades.
Bottom line
A self-hosted Telegram channel archive is practical when you treat it as a user-account MTProto client with durable storage, not as a Bot API script. Deploy the documented Compose stack or native binary, complete the phone-code and optional 2FA login, persist the session and download directories, backfill history, and keep monitoring enabled for new posts. Then copy the archive beyond the VPS and test a restore. That combination gives you an independently managed archive while acknowledging Telegram access limits, FloodWait behavior, and the fact that automated downloading can never be risk-free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a normal Telegram bot token download a channel’s complete history?
Not through the documented whole-channel workflow. The archiver described here signs in as a user account over MTProto, using that account’s channel access and a persistent session.
Do I need to keep my phone online after the first login?
The first login requires the phone code and, when enabled, the 2FA password. After a successful login, the application reuses its persistent session file; protect that file and verify the mount after upgrades.
Is Docker required?
No. The reviewed project documents both Docker Compose and a native binary. Compose simplifies volume and service management, while the native option may fit hosts that already use traditional Linux service supervision.
Will the archive include posts the account cannot currently see?
No. The downloader can preserve only content available to the signed-in account. Private, deleted, expired, or otherwise inaccessible messages and media cannot be guaranteed.
Is a VPS snapshot enough as a backup?
No. A snapshot remains in the same failure domain. Keep a separate local, remote, or offline copy, protect sensitive session data, and periodically perform a restore test.
