The supported way to self-host Discourse is to run its Docker installation on a 64-bit Linux VPS with root SSH access. Start with at least 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM plus swap, and 10 GB of disk for a small test forum; 2 or more cores, 2 GB or more RAM, and 20 GB or more disk is the safer starting point for a live community. You will need a hostname that resolves to the server, ports 80 and 443 available, and SMTP if you want conventional registration mail, digests, mailing-list mode, or email replies.

What self-hosting Discourse actually involves
Discourse is not installed as a collection of packages directly on the host. The Discourse project states that the only officially supported installs are Docker-based. The supported pattern is a Docker-managed application on a modern 64-bit Linux server, normally a fresh Ubuntu or Debian VPS. Docker keeps the application stack reproducible while the VPS owner remains responsible for the operating system, DNS, backups, security, storage, and email delivery.

The cloud installation guide says the process works on any Docker-compatible cloud provider or on a local server. Its named examples include DigitalOcean, AWS EC2, Google Cloud Platform, Linode/Akamai, Vultr, and Hetzner, but the provider name is less important than the capabilities listed below.
VPS requirements and sizing
Choose the server size according to the workload you expect, not only the first page load. Discourse can run on a small machine for evaluation, but uploads, search indexing, background jobs, PostgreSQL activity, and concurrent visitors consume memory and CPU headroom.

| Resource | Minimum published starting point | Recommended starting point | What the resource affects |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 1 modern core | 2 or more cores | Container builds, web requests, background jobs, search indexing, and upgrades |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM with swap | 2 GB or more RAM | PostgreSQL, Redis, Rails workers, asset compilation, and simultaneous requests |
| Disk | 10 GB | 20 GB or more | Operating system, Docker layers, database growth, uploads, logs, and backups |
| Operating system | 64-bit Linux | Fresh Ubuntu or Debian VPS | The officially documented cloud-install path |
| Network | Docker-capable server with root SSH | Provider firewall controls and reliable bandwidth | SSH administration, HTTP/HTTPS traffic, updates, and outbound mail |
The 1 GB configuration is a constrained baseline, not a performance promise. Swap helps prevent an immediate out-of-memory failure, but it is slower than physical RAM. Leave room for the Docker image, operating-system updates, database growth, uploaded files, and temporary space used while rebuilding the container. A forum that is growing steadily should move toward the recommended 2-core, 2 GB-or-more profile before memory pressure becomes an outage.
The general installation requirements also call for PostgreSQL compatible with the deployed Discourse image, Redis 7, and Ruby 3.2 or newer. In the supported Docker workflow, the image supplies and manages the application versions; you should not independently install a conflicting Ruby, Redis, or PostgreSQL stack on the host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare the VPS before running the installer
1. Select a Docker-capable server
Order a 64-bit VPS with root SSH access, a public IP address, and enough disk for both the initial image build and future data. Check that the provider allows Docker and does not block inbound TCP ports 80 and 443. A region close to your members reduces latency, while snapshot and backup facilities make recovery easier. Compare providers on CPU and RAM headroom, disk type and capacity, backup or snapshot tools, bandwidth limits, IPv4 and IPv6 availability, firewall controls, reliability, support, and total recurring cost.
2. Decide the public hostname
Use a dedicated name such as forum.example.com. Create a DNS A record for that name pointing to the VPS IPv4 address and wait for it to resolve before you start certificate provisioning. The installation guide also offers an optional *.discourse.diy subdomain for testing, learning, or hobby projects. A custom domain is the normal choice for a public community and for an address you may later move to another server.
3. Establish secure administration
Use SSH keys where possible, keep the root credentials private, and record the server IP and hostname. At the provider layer, allow SSH only from the administration networks you actually use and allow web traffic on ports 80 and 443. Do not expose PostgreSQL or Redis to the public Internet; those services should remain inside the Docker deployment unless you deliberately design a protected multi-container architecture.

4. Plan storage and recovery
Decide where database dumps, uploaded files, and server snapshots will live before launch. A snapshot is useful for a fast rollback, but it is not a substitute for an independent backup that you have restored successfully. Monitor free disk space from the first day because a full volume can stop database writes, image rebuilds, and log rotation.
Install Discourse with the official Docker workflow
The installer performs the Docker setup and opens an interactive configuration wizard. Run these steps from a machine with SSH access to the new VPS.
- Connect as root. SSH to the server using the address supplied by your VPS provider. Work on the fresh 64-bit Ubuntu or Debian installation you prepared.
- Run the installer. Execute
wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/discourse/discourse_docker/main/install-discourse | sudo bash. It can install Docker and git when they are absent, download the Discourse Docker configuration, and start the setup wizard. - Provide administrator addresses. Enter one or more email addresses that should receive administrator registration instructions. These addresses are used to create the first administrator account after the site comes up.
- Enter the hostname. Supply the exact public name, such as
forum.example.com. It must resolve to this VPS before HTTPS certificate issuance can succeed. - Choose the email path. Enter SMTP host, port, credentials, and sender details if you need normal email registration, password-related mail, digests, mailing-list mode, or replies by email. The current wizard can skip SMTP and enable Discourse ID login or social sign-in, but skipping SMTP leaves those traditional email workflows unavailable until you configure a mail service later.
- Confirm the generated configuration. Review the values shown by the wizard and approve the build. The guide estimates approximately five to ten minutes, although the actual duration depends on CPU, disk, and network speed. The installer checks ports 80 and 443, verifies DNS, tunes some settings for available resources, and requests a Let’s Encrypt certificate when the hostname resolves correctly.
- Finish in the browser. Open the HTTPS hostname, register using one of the administrator addresses entered during setup, and complete Discourse’s in-app setup wizard. Set the site name, category structure, moderation defaults, and other community policies there.
If the build fails, do not repeatedly rerun the command while changing random settings. Record the displayed error, verify DNS and port access, inspect the application logs, correct the underlying issue, and rebuild from the existing configuration.
DNS, HTTPS, and email dependencies
DNS must be correct before certificates
Let’s Encrypt validation depends on the public hostname reaching this server. An A record pointing at an old address, a typo in the hostname, or a provider firewall blocking port 80 can prevent certificate issuance. Confirm that the name resolves to the VPS from outside the server and that no second server is answering for the same name. Allow time for DNS propagation before concluding that the installer is broken.
HTTPS is provisioned during setup
When DNS is correct, the installer provisions HTTPS through Let’s Encrypt. The site should be accessed using the resulting HTTPS hostname rather than the raw IP address. If certificate issuance fails, fix the DNS or port problem first; changing application settings cannot make a validation request reach an incorrect address.

SMTP is optional only for a limited launch
A forum can be brought up without SMTP in the current wizard, especially for a private test. A public community normally needs reliable outbound mail for account confirmation, password recovery, notifications, digests, and moderation messages. Mailing-list mode and email replies also depend on working SMTP and the corresponding inbound-mail configuration. Treat sender authentication, provider limits, bounce handling, and deliverability as part of operating the forum, not as an optional cosmetic setting.
Understand the default architecture
Standalone Docker deployment
The standalone template documented by Discourse is the easiest path. It packages the Rails application, PostgreSQL, Redis, web server, background jobs, and supporting processes in the Docker-managed deployment. For a single VPS and a small or medium community, this keeps upgrades and troubleshooting in one place.
Multi-container deployment
A multi-container design separates services or places the database on stronger hardware. It can reduce upgrade downtime, provide more room to scale across servers, and isolate PostgreSQL and Redis workloads. The trade-off is operational complexity: you must coordinate versions, networking, credentials, backups, and firewall rules. PostgreSQL and Redis must be protected from public access, and a failure in any service becomes a distributed troubleshooting problem.
| Architecture | Best fit | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone template | First deployment, hobby forum, or one VPS | Simpler installation, one configuration location, documented rebuild process | Less isolation and less flexibility when individual services need separate hardware |
| Multi-container | Larger communities or planned horizontal growth | Database isolation, stronger service-specific sizing, reduced upgrade downtime, scaling across servers | More networking, firewall, monitoring, backup, and upgrade work |
Secure and maintain the host
Keep the operating system current
Enable unattended security updates on Ubuntu or Debian, while scheduling and testing Discourse container upgrades deliberately. Security patches for the host and application are separate responsibilities. A current application on an unpatched host is still exposed, and a patched host with an outdated application still needs attention.
Limit attack surface
Use provider firewall rules and host firewall rules to expose only SSH administration and web traffic. Keep database and Redis ports private. Consider fail2ban for brute-force protection, particularly when SSH or other administrative endpoints are reachable from the Internet. Use strong administrator passwords, protect SSH keys, and remove access for people who no longer administer the server.

Watch capacity indicators
Track disk utilization, memory pressure, swap activity, CPU load, and backup success. A forum can appear healthy while uploads or database files quietly consume the remaining disk. Set an alert threshold before the volume is full and make expansion or migration a planned operation rather than an emergency.

Routine upgrades
The normal upgrade path is the web admin upgrade page. From SSH, the documented command sequence is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →cd /var/discourse
./launcher rebuild app
The rebuild downloads the configured image and recreates the application container. Schedule it during a quiet period, maintain a current backup, and allow enough time for the image build and post-upgrade checks. Do not delete the existing configuration directory to solve a routine upgrade problem.
Read logs before changing settings
To inspect application output, run:
cd /var/discourse
./launcher logs app
For an interactive shell inside the container, run:
cd /var/discourse
./launcher enter app
When a request fails in the web interface, review the Rails production log from inside the container after checking the high-level launcher output. Match the timestamp of the user-visible failure with the log entry, then correct the named dependency or configuration value and rebuild only when the change requires it.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Backups, restores, and operational ownership
The VPS owner is responsible for backups and proving that they work. Keep copies of the database and uploaded files in a location that is independent of the running server. Provider snapshots are useful for rapid rollback, while application-level backups protect against accidental deletion or a corrupted snapshot. Define how many historical copies you need, how long to retain them, and who can retrieve them; the official installation material does not prescribe a universal retention schedule.
Perform restore tests on a separate instance or isolated environment. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Test that users, categories, posts, uploads, administrator access, and email settings survive the procedure. Document the recovery order: provision a compatible VPS, restore data, point DNS to the recovered host, verify HTTPS, and check outbound mail before declaring the forum recovered.
Choosing between VPS offers
Price alone is a poor selection rule. Use the following comparison when evaluating any Docker-compatible VPS:
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Access and compatibility | Do you receive root SSH access on a 64-bit Linux image, and is Docker permitted? |
| Compute headroom | Can you start at 2 cores and 2 GB RAM or resize without rebuilding the forum? |
| Storage | Is there enough SSD-backed disk for uploads, database growth, image layers, and backups? |
| Recovery tools | Are snapshots, automated backups, and volume expansion available, and what are their restore limits? |
| Networking | Are IPv4, IPv6, bandwidth, reverse DNS, and firewall controls suitable for web and mail traffic? |
| Reliability and support | What outage history, support response, maintenance notices, and region choices are offered? |
| Total cost | What will compute, storage, snapshots, backups, bandwidth overages, and extra IP addresses cost each month? |
Troubleshooting the common first-day failures
The installer cannot verify DNS
- Confirm the hostname in the wizard exactly matches the DNS record.
- Confirm the A record points to the current VPS address, not a previous server.
- Check that the provider and host firewalls allow inbound ports 80 and 443.
- Wait for DNS propagation, then retry after the name resolves publicly.
Let’s Encrypt cannot issue a certificate
- Make sure the hostname resolves to this server from an external network.
- Remove conflicting records or another web server answering for the same name.
- Keep port 80 reachable during validation and rerun the setup after correcting DNS.
The container build runs out of memory or disk
- Check available RAM, swap, and free disk before rebuilding.
- Stop unrelated workloads on a small VPS and remove only data you have verified is disposable.
- Resize toward the recommended 2-core, 2 GB-or-more profile or add storage before attempting another build.
Users do not receive email
- Verify SMTP host, port, credentials, sender address, and encryption settings in the Discourse configuration.
- Check the mail provider’s sending limits, bounce reports, and spam filtering.
- Confirm that the VPS provider permits outbound SMTP traffic and that DNS records required by your mail provider are present.
An upgrade or page request fails
- Run
./launcher logs appfrom/var/discourseand correlate errors with the failure time. - Enter the container with
./launcher enter appwhen the Rails production log is needed. - Restore from a known-good backup or snapshot only after preserving logs and identifying whether the failure is application, database, storage, or host related.
Launch checklist
- 64-bit Ubuntu or Debian VPS with root SSH access and Docker support
- At least 1 core, 1 GB RAM with swap, and 10 GB disk for a constrained test; preferably 2 or more cores, 2 GB or more RAM, and 20 GB or more disk for production
- Custom hostname and DNS A record pointing to the VPS
- Inbound ports 80 and 443 available for web traffic and certificate validation
- Administrator email addresses recorded
- SMTP configured if registration mail, digests, mailing-list mode, notifications, or email replies are required
- Independent backup destination and a documented restore test
- Host security updates, firewall rules, and brute-force protection considered
- Disk, memory, CPU, backup, and email monitoring in place
- A maintenance window and rollback plan for container rebuilds
When self-hosting is the right choice
Self-host Discourse when you want control over the server, domain, upgrades, data location, and operating costs and are prepared to perform those administrative tasks continuously. A small test forum can fit the minimum profile, but a public community should budget for recommended resources, reliable mail, backups, monitoring, and time spent maintaining the host. If you do not want to manage Linux security, storage recovery, upgrades, and deliverability, a managed Discourse service removes much of that work at the expense of control and provider dependence.
