How to Fix fsck and Read-Only File System Errors on Linux

A read-only Linux filesystem is often a protective response to corruption or I/O trouble. Identify the device and type, read kernel logs, unmount the volume, and use the native offline checker—e2fsck for ext2/3/4 and XFS-specific tools for XFS.

A Linux filesystem that suddenly becomes read-only is often protecting your data after detecting corruption or an I/O failure. Do not begin by repeatedly forcing a read-write remount or by running fsck against a mounted disk. First identify the device, mount point, and filesystem type; read the kernel logs; then unmount the affected filesystem (or boot recovery media for the root filesystem) and run the filesystem’s native checker offline. For ext2, ext3, and ext4 that checker is e2fsck. XFS requires its own recovery and repair procedure.

What a read-only remount means

Linux can change a mounted filesystem from read-write (rw) to read-only (ro) after an error. On ext filesystems, the errors=remount-ro behavior is specifically designed to stop further metadata changes when corruption is detected. The immediate symptom may be “Read-only file system” when a program tries to create, edit, delete, or rename a file.

This state is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The cause may be filesystem metadata damage, a journal problem, a failing storage device, a cable or controller timeout, or another I/O fault. A temporary mount -o remount,rw can make a volume writable again in some cases, but it does not repair the underlying problem. If errors recur, every additional write can increase the risk to the data.

Before you repair anything

Protect important data

If the volume contains irreplaceable files, stop applications that write to it and avoid repeated remount attempts. Copy accessible data to a known-good destination before a repair when possible. If kernel logs show repeated media, timeout, or read/write errors, treat the storage device as suspect rather than assuming a filesystem-only problem.

Know whether the target is root

You should not perform a normal repair on the live root filesystem. The operating system has that filesystem mounted and is actively using it. Use your distribution’s recovery mode or a live Linux environment, identify the root partition from there, and run the check while it is unmounted.

Identify the device, mount point, and filesystem

Never guess the partition name. A device such as /dev/sda2, an LVM logical volume, an encrypted mapping, or a UUID may be presented differently on another boot. Run these commands against the affected path or inspect all block devices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /path/to/problem
lsblk -f
mount

findmnt reports the source device, filesystem type, and active mount options for a path. lsblk -f shows filesystem labels, UUIDs, and types for block devices. The mount listing is useful when you need to confirm the exact mount point or whether a volume is already read-only.

Record the complete result before unmounting. The filesystem type determines the checker and its options; a generic fsck command may dispatch to a helper, but it does not make ext-specific options safe for XFS or another filesystem.

Read the kernel evidence

Kernel messages usually tell you whether Linux saw metadata corruption, journal recovery, checksum failures, timeouts, or hardware I/O errors. Check both the current boot’s recent messages and the kernel journal:

dmesg -T | tail -n 100
journalctl -k -b -p warning..alert

Search the output for the device name and terms such as EXT4-fs error, journal errors, checksum failures, I/O errors, command timeouts, resets, or medium errors. A single filesystem error can justify an offline check. Repeated I/O or timeout messages call for data protection and hardware investigation; forcing the filesystem back to rw will not fix an unreliable disk, cable, controller, or enclosure.

Why you must not run a normal repair on a mounted filesystem

The ext checker’s manual warns that, in general, it is not safe to run e2fsck on a mounted filesystem and that results from doing so are not valid. A mounted filesystem can change while the checker is reading its metadata. The checker may then report misleading problems or make changes based on an inconsistent view.

The safe rule is simple: unmount a separate data volume before repair, and use recovery mode or live media for a root volume. A read-only mount is not automatically equivalent to an offline filesystem check: the kernel may still replay a journal during mount, and the filesystem remains mounted.

Repairing ext2, ext3, and ext4

Unmount a separate ext volume

Stop services, shells, file managers, containers, and game clients that use the mount point. Then unmount the actual device or mount point discovered earlier:

sudo umount /dev/DEVICE

Replace /dev/DEVICE with the source shown by findmnt; you can also provide the mount-point path. If unmounting reports that the target is busy, identify open users before escalating:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo fuser -vm /path/to/mount
sudo lsof +f -- /path/to/mount

Close the listed processes or stop the associated service, then retry umount. Do not use a forced unmount as a routine shortcut when data integrity matters; first understand which process is still writing.

Check first without changing metadata

For ext2, ext3, and ext4, use e2fsck, the native checker. A read-only pass lets you see what it would report before authorizing repairs:

sudo e2fsck -n /dev/DEVICE

The -n option answers “no” to repair prompts and prevents normal corrective changes. It is a diagnostic pass, not proof that the device is healthy. Confirm that the command targets the intended, unmounted partition and review the output for inode, bitmap, superblock, or journal problems.

Run the repair after confirming the target

When you have a backup or an acceptable recovery plan and the filesystem is definitely unmounted, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo e2fsck -f /dev/DEVICE

The -f option forces a full check even when the filesystem’s clean flag would otherwise let the tool skip some work. Follow the prompts carefully. Depending on the damage, the checker may repair directory entries, inode metadata, allocation maps, or the journal. A large volume can take a substantial amount of time; do not interrupt it merely because progress appears slow.

If the checker reports serious or recurring errors, stop and reassess the storage device and your backup. Re-running repair repeatedly is not a substitute for diagnosing a disk that is returning bad reads or timing out.

Repair the root filesystem from recovery media

For a root partition, reboot into your distribution’s recovery mode or a live environment. Open a root shell, identify the root partition with lsblk -f, and verify that it is not mounted. If the live system auto-mounted it, unmount it before running e2fsck. Then perform the same read-only pass and, if appropriate, the repair pass on the identified ext partition.

If the root filesystem is encrypted, assembled through LVM, or part of a software RAID set, activate the required layers in the recovery environment first and run the checker on the correct filesystem device, not blindly on an underlying component. The exact activation commands vary by distribution and storage layout, so use the identifiers shown by lsblk -f and the recovery environment’s documentation.

Understanding ext4 read-only mounts and journal replay

Ext4 is journaled. When it is mounted, the kernel may replay pending journal transactions to bring metadata to a consistent state. Therefore, ro does not always mean that absolutely no blocks will be written.

When you need a recovery inspection that must not replay the journal, mount the filesystem with both ro and noload:

sudo mount -o ro,noload /dev/DEVICE /mnt/recovery

The noload option prevents journal loading and the associated writes. This is useful for examining files or copying data while preserving the on-disk journal state for later analysis. It is not a replacement for an offline e2fsck repair. Unmount the inspection mount before running the checker.

XFS: use XFS-specific recovery, not e2fsck

fsck.xfs is not a generic ext-style repair pass, and e2fsck must never be used on XFS. XFS performs necessary log recovery at mount time and provides its own repair tooling.

Identify XFS and unmount it

Confirm FSTYPE is xfs with findmnt or lsblk -f. Stop users of the volume and unmount it just as you would for an ext volume. For a root XFS filesystem, boot recovery media so it is not active.

Follow the matching XFS procedure

Use the xfs_repair procedure documented for your distribution and XFS version. Read its current manual before selecting options because repair behavior, log handling, and recovery requirements differ from ext filesystems. First protect accessible data, verify the target device, and avoid improvising ext4 commands on XFS.

If XFS cannot mount because of log or metadata damage, the appropriate recovery sequence may involve XFS log recovery or other XFS utilities before repair. The exact response depends on the messages in the kernel log; treat repeated I/O errors as a possible hardware failure rather than a purely logical XFS problem.

Other Linux filesystems

Btrfs, F2FS, ZFS, and other filesystems each have their own consistency checks, repair tools, and mount-state rules. Use the checker native to the detected type and consult the current manual for that filesystem. A bare fsck command can dispatch to a filesystem-specific helper, but the correct options and risks are not interchangeable.

Do not infer a repair command from the device name alone. A partition such as /dev/nvme0n1p3 reveals only its location; lsblk -f reveals whether it contains ext4, XFS, or something else.

Choosing the safe procedure

Situation Can it remain mounted? Action Main risk
Separate ext2/ext3/ext4 data volume No for normal repair Stop users, unmount, run e2fsck -n, then repair if confirmed Checking a mounted volume gives unsafe or invalid results
Root ext2/ext3/ext4 volume No Use recovery mode or live media, verify it is unmounted, then run e2fsck The running system continually uses the filesystem
Separate XFS volume No for repair Unmount and follow the distribution’s xfs_repair procedure e2fsck is the wrong filesystem tool
Root XFS volume No Boot recovery media and use XFS-specific recovery and repair tools Live root activity can invalidate a repair
Any filesystem with repeated I/O or timeout errors Avoid write activity Protect data, inspect hardware and logs, and repair only after the target is secure Repeated writes or forced remounts can worsen loss on failing media
Ext4 inspection where journal writes must be avoided Read-only inspection only Mount with ro,noload, copy or inspect data, then unmount Plain ro may still replay the journal

Why remounting read-write often fails

A command such as sudo mount -o remount,rw /mountpoint changes mount policy only if the kernel considers the filesystem safe to write. It does not clear corrupted metadata, repair a journal, or fix a device that is returning I/O errors. The remount may be refused, may work only until the next error, or may hide the warning while new writes accumulate.

If you use a temporary remount solely to copy a small amount of data, keep the session focused on data preservation, watch the kernel log, and return to an offline check. Do not treat a successful remount as evidence that the original fault is gone.

After the check or repair

  1. Wait for the native checker to finish and note its final status and any unrepaired errors.
  2. Unmount any recovery or inspection mount and reboot normally, or remount the separate volume using its normal configuration.
  3. Confirm the expected filesystem type and options with findmnt -no SOURCE,FSTYPE,OPTIONS /path.
  4. Read fresh kernel messages with dmesg -T | tail -n 100 or journalctl -k -b -p warning..alert.
  5. Test representative files and applications without immediately launching a large write workload.

If the filesystem becomes read-only again, stop forcing it back to rw. Preserve data, record the new log messages, and investigate the storage path. A clean checker run cannot rule out a device that is beginning to fail intermittently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and their safer alternatives

  • Running fsck on the mounted root filesystem: boot recovery media and verify the partition is unmounted first.
  • Running e2fsck on XFS: identify the type and use XFS-specific tools.
  • Assuming ro means zero writes on ext4: use ro,noload when journal replay must be prevented.
  • Ignoring repeated I/O errors: prioritize data protection and hardware diagnosis.
  • Guessing a partition: use findmnt and lsblk -f and verify the UUID, label, mount point, and type.
  • Interrupting a long repair without assessing consequences: allow the checker to complete unless the device is clearly failing or the system becomes unsafe, then reassess from recovery media.

A compact decision checklist

  1. Is the data backed up or otherwise protected?
  2. Which device and mount point produced the error?
  3. What filesystem type does findmnt or lsblk -f report?
  4. Do kernel logs show corruption only, or repeated hardware I/O and timeout errors?
  5. Is the target a separate volume that can be unmounted, or the root filesystem requiring recovery media?
  6. Which native checker matches the type: e2fsck for ext2/3/4, XFS tooling for XFS, and the corresponding tool for other filesystems?
  7. Have you completed a diagnostic or read-only pass before authorizing repairs?
  8. Afterward, do the mount options and kernel logs remain normal?
