To self-host Odoo safely, keep Odoo on a private address such as 127.0.0.1:8069 and let Nginx be the public entry point. Nginx owns port 80, redirects HTTP to HTTPS, terminates TLS, forwards the required proxy headers, and sends application traffic to Odoo. Realtime traffic must also be sent to the long-polling or gevent worker required by your Odoo release. Odoo’s production guidance requires HTTPS for authentication traffic and says proxy mode must be enabled only when Odoo is behind a reverse proxy.

What “run Odoo on port 80” actually means
Odoo does not need to bind directly to the privileged public port. In a production deployment, Nginx listens on port 80 and normally uses that listener only to redirect visitors to HTTPS. A second Nginx server block listens on the HTTPS port, handles the certificate, and proxies requests to Odoo’s private HTTP service, commonly 127.0.0.1:8069.

Traffic flow
- A browser requests
http://odoo.example.comon port 80. - Nginx returns a redirect to the HTTPS URL; authenticated Odoo traffic is not served over cleartext HTTP.
- The browser connects to the TLS-enabled Nginx server.
- Nginx forwards normal requests to Odoo’s HTTP upstream.
- Nginx sends long-polling or websocket requests to the realtime worker and preserves the upgrade and forwarding headers required by that worker.
Prerequisites before configuring Nginx
- A supported Linux host with enough CPU, memory and disk I/O for Odoo and PostgreSQL.
- Odoo and PostgreSQL installed and able to communicate locally or over a protected internal network.
- A DNS name pointing to the host’s public address, such as
odoo.example.com. - An HTTPS certificate and private key for that hostname.
- Administrative access to create the Odoo service, edit Nginx configuration and reload both services.
- A backup destination outside the server for PostgreSQL databases and the Odoo filestore.
Install Odoo using a method supported by the Odoo release you intend to run. Keep the application listener bound to localhost or an internal interface; do not open port 8069 to the entire internet merely because Nginx needs to reach it.

Plan workers and memory for production
Odoo’s multiprocessing server is intended for production on Linux. Set a nonzero workers value rather than relying on the single-process development mode. Odoo documents the following planning heuristics:

These figures come from Odoo’s current Odoo 18 deployment guidance and are planning aids rather than benchmarks. Leave headroom for PostgreSQL, the operating system, scheduled jobs, file processing and traffic spikes. Increase or reduce workers only after checking actual resource use; adding workers to a memory-constrained machine can make it less stable.

Settings that belong in the production configuration
Set the worker count and the CPU, memory, request and timeout limits appropriate for the host. Exact limits depend on your workload and Odoo release, so record the values you choose and review them after observing production behavior.
Enable proxy mode in Odoo with proxy_mode = True in the configuration file or with the --proxy-mode startup option. Odoo states that proxy mode should be enabled only when every public request reaches Odoo through a trusted reverse proxy. Do not enable it while users can bypass Nginx and connect directly to the Odoo port.

Create the Nginx reverse-proxy configuration
The following example shows the required shape. Replace the hostname and certificate paths with the names used on your server. The Odoo upstream remains private; Nginx is the only service exposed on the public web ports.

For production, add explicit proxy_connect_timeout, proxy_read_timeout and proxy_send_timeout values appropriate to your workload. Short defaults can terminate report generation, imports or long-poll requests before Odoo completes them; excessively long values can keep failed connections around and consume worker capacity.
Route realtime traffic for your Odoo release
Normal page loads and API calls can use the HTTP worker, but Discuss, Live Chat and notification features use a separate realtime mechanism. The correct Nginx location and backend depend on the installed Odoo release.

Releases using long-polling
Older official examples route requests whose path begins with /longpolling to a LiveChat or long-polling worker, commonly at 127.0.0.1:8072. Put that location before the catch-all / location so it is handled by the realtime upstream rather than the ordinary HTTP worker.
Releases using websocket paths
Odoo 17 documentation describes routing websocket paths to the gevent worker or port. In that configuration, add a location for the websocket path documented for your exact Odoo build and proxy it to the gevent listener. A websocket proxy must preserve the connection upgrade:

}Use the path and gevent port specified for your release rather than assuming that every Odoo version uses /longpolling or the same listener. If the path is wrong, ordinary pages may work while chat messages, presence indicators and notifications remain delayed or completely silent.
Apply the configuration safely
- Save the Odoo configuration with proxy mode enabled, the chosen worker count and resource limits.
- Confirm that Odoo is listening only on its intended localhost or internal address and that its service starts successfully.
- Place the Nginx server block in the location used by your Linux distribution, then enable it according to that distribution’s Nginx convention.
- Check the configuration with
nginx -t. Do not reload Nginx if the test reports an error. - Reload Nginx after a successful test. A reload allows existing connections to finish while workers adopt the new configuration.
- Restart or reload Odoo when its configuration changes, following the service manager and packaging method used for your installation.
- Inspect both Nginx and Odoo logs immediately after the change. A successful Nginx reload does not prove that Odoo can accept requests or that the realtime worker is reachable.
Firewall and network isolation
Expose only the ports required for public access. Port 80 is useful for the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and certificate workflows; the user-facing application should be on HTTPS. Keep PostgreSQL and Odoo’s internal HTTP, long-polling or gevent ports restricted to localhost or the private network. If another internal host must reach Odoo, allow only that host or security group instead of opening the port globally.

When Nginx and Odoo run on the same machine, binding the upstreams to 127.0.0.1 prevents remote clients from bypassing Nginx. When they run on separate machines, bind Odoo to a private interface and restrict the firewall to the Nginx host’s address.
Test the deployment in the order users experience it
- Redirect: Request the HTTP URL and verify that it redirects to the equivalent HTTPS URL without changing the hostname or path.
- Certificate: Open the HTTPS hostname and confirm that the certificate matches the hostname and is accepted by the client.
- Login: Sign in and verify that redirects return to HTTPS rather than switching back to HTTP.
- Assets: Load a hard refresh of the login and application pages. Missing CSS or JavaScript often indicates a proxy path, host or scheme-header problem.
- Application actions: Open records, create a small test entry and run a representative report or import to reveal timeout and worker-limit issues.
- Realtime features: Test Discuss, Live Chat, presence and notifications in two browser sessions. Check the browser’s network panel for the long-polling or websocket request and inspect the corresponding Nginx and Odoo logs.
- Isolation: From an external network, confirm that direct connections to PostgreSQL and Odoo’s internal ports are refused.
Troubleshoot common failures
Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Check that the Odoo service is running, that it is listening on the address and port named in the upstream, and that the host firewall allows the local connection. If Odoo listens on an internal address rather than localhost, update the upstream to that address and restrict access to Nginx.
Every request redirects repeatedly
A redirect loop usually means Odoo does not see the original request as HTTPS. Confirm that proxy mode is enabled only for proxied traffic and that Nginx sends X-Forwarded-Proto with the client scheme. Also check that the HTTPS server block, not the port-80 block, is handling the redirected request.
The page loads but shows the wrong hostname or insecure links
Verify Host, X-Forwarded-Host and X-Forwarded-Proto. Ensure the public hostname resolves to Nginx and that no second proxy is replacing those headers unexpectedly.

Chat and notifications are delayed or absent
Confirm the release-specific realtime path, the gevent or long-polling listener, and the matching Nginx location. A catch-all / proxy can accidentally send realtime requests to the ordinary worker. For websocket mode, verify that Upgrade and Connection are forwarded. Review logs for connection resets, an unreachable realtime port or an incorrect path.

Increase the Nginx read, connect and send timeouts to values suitable for the operation, then check Odoo’s request and memory limits. A timeout that is too short can terminate a healthy long-running request; a limit that is too high can allow one request to consume a worker for an unacceptable period.
Users can bypass HTTPS or the proxy
Remove public firewall access to Odoo’s internal port, keep proxy mode behind the trusted proxy boundary, and retain the port-80 redirect. Do not treat a working Nginx page as proof that the backend is protected; test direct access from an outside network.
Choose hosting around the workload, not just the monthly price
When selecting a VPS or dedicated Linux host, compare the resources and operational controls that affect Odoo:
- CPU and RAM headroom: Size for PostgreSQL, Odoo workers, cron jobs and peak activity, not only the average number of logged-in users.
- Disk I/O: Database queries, attachments, imports and report generation can be sensitive to storage latency and sustained throughput.
- Backups and restores: Confirm that database and filestore backups are both covered and that you can perform a restoration test to another location.
- Region and latency: Place the host near users and integrated services when interactive response time matters.
- Firewall controls: You need rules that can keep PostgreSQL and Odoo’s internal listeners private while allowing public HTTPS.
- TLS operations: Ensure you can issue, renew and replace certificates without interrupting service.
- Monitoring: Collect CPU, memory, disk, worker, database and Nginx metrics so capacity decisions are based on observed behavior.
- Configuration freedom: The host must permit the PostgreSQL version, worker model, scheduled jobs and networking required by your Odoo release.
Backups, upgrades and routine operations
Back up the PostgreSQL database and Odoo filestore off the application host. A database-only backup does not restore uploaded documents, and a filestore-only copy does not restore transactional data. Protect backup credentials, retain multiple recovery points and periodically perform a restore test.
Before upgrading Odoo or changing worker and proxy settings, record the current configuration and test the change on a staging hostname when possible. After an upgrade, re-check the realtime endpoint because the expected long-polling or websocket path can differ between releases. Validate Nginx syntax before every reload and keep an eye on Odoo and Nginx logs during the first user sessions after a change.
